As I look back, I wish I had spent more time with them discussing some of the "other things" superintendents need to know. Here are a few of the "other things". • Dealing with members, owners and golf professionals. Printer's Choice, Inc. 1845 S.W. 4th Ave., A-4 Delray Beach, FL 33444 (407) 276-8339 Florida Green Editor, Dan Jones, CGCS (407) 793-0069 • Dealing with salespeople, contractors and inspectors. FTGA, Larry Livingston, CGCS (813) 922-0833 • Writing and balancing budgets. • The working superintendent versus the managing superintendent. • Explaining honest mistakes. • Supporting scholarship and research funding efforts. The Green Sheet is a bi-monthly FGCSA Newsletter printed as follows: Jan./Feb.; Mar./Apr.; Sept./Oct.; Nov./ Dec. The Green Sheet is designed to be a current, up-to-date newsletter as compared to the "Florida Green" (an educational communication magazine.) NEXT EDITOR'S DEADLINE MEMBER OF EAP December 16th Ethics, Paul Crawford (407) 845-2395 An untold number of assistant superintendents with an excellent understanding of mechanics, turf requirements, and scheduling labor have had difficulty with the "other things" when they became superintendents. You can also help by introducing him to the superintendent "community." Encourage him to join the FGCSA and attend a few chapter meetings each year. This invaluable experience can assure your assistant that we all have similar problems and that we are prepared to help our fellow members upon request. B BIG DOLLARS BENT II SEMINAR DONATED FOR RESEARCH The FGCSA Education Committee presented a highly successful Bentgrass Part II seminar at JDM Club on Wednesday, September 7th. < The combined efforts of all local chapters of the FGCSA amounted to a total of $44,620 being donated to the FTGA Research Foundation on Tuesday, October 11, 1988, at the FTGA Awards Banquet. Superintendents and club officials totally 93 attendees were treated to an informal question and answer type discussion of all phases of Bentgrass maintenance. Specific chapter contributions were as follows: Central Florida Everglades North Florida Palm Beach South Florida Suncoast Treasure Coast West Coast Panelists included Dr. Paul Alexander, Dr. James Beard, Dr. Joseph Duich, Dr. Bruce Martin and Dr. Joseph Vargas. Panelists agreed they gained as much information from our Florida superintendents to aid them with their research as the superintendents gained from the experts concerning their particular problems with maintaining their greens. The program was videotaped by David Court and is currently being edited onto one tape. A survey will be sent to all attendees to get their feedback on the program. The Education Committee is planning another seminar for the same time next year but a specific topic has not been selected pending review of the surveys. Tom Mackanos, a good ol Bent Boy, attended Bent II, and we might comment, Tom also added input to the seminar. • Clint Smallridge says, "I remember running one of these things when I was a little boy." $ 4,000. $ 7,000. $ 1,000. $10,000. $13,000. $ 2,000. $ 1,120. $ 6,500. Most of the chapters raised their funds through Golf Tournaments planned by the local chapters. We applaud the efforts of the local chapter officers and Tournament Directors who elected to give their time in setting up and running these very successful events. Chapter members are also to be congratulated for pitching in and supporting their chapter tournaments. Why is this man smiling? See page 6 for the exciting answer. MARK JARRELL THE MOST DISTINGUISHED The 1988 FGCSA Distinguished Service Award was presented to MARK JARRELL at the FTGA Awards Banquet on Tuesday, October 11th. Mark was recognized by his peers for his outstanding achievements as a Florida golf course superintendent. Mark is a Certified Golf Course Superintendent for Palm Beach National G & C C where he has been employed for nine years. He is a past president of the Palm Beach chapter after serving on their Board of Directors for five years. He serves as Chairman of the Public Relations Committee for the FGCSA and, as such, has made great strides to improve the professional image of the golf course superintendent. He has also served two years on the GCSAA Public Relations Committee and is currently serving a second term as Director of the FTGA. Mark's byline is seen every month in Golfweek magazine where he serves as Technical Editor for the Course Management issue. His articles are timely and informative to both the golfer and the management staff of our local golf courses. To quote from the letter of nomination from the Palm Beach chapter, "Mark Jarrell's accomplishments alone would make him a worthy candidate for the FGCSA Distinguished Service Award, but it is the willingness and zeal with which he dispatches his many responsibilities that we feel makes his nomination worth careful consideration. 1 THE RIDGE IS RISING —by Tom Benefield FGCSA Membership Committee On October 6, 1988, the Greenleaf Resort was host to the formative meeting of the Ridge Association. There were sixteen Superintendents or Assistants representing fourteen golf courses in attendance. The purpose of the meeting was to ascertain the depth of interest from the local superintendents as to developing an allied association within the framework of the FGCSA. The talk at the meeting from all who attended was very positive and cautiously optimistic. Of all the concerns expressed, the idea of being "on the fringes" of other associations was the most prominent. The Ridge is in a gray area which touches several other associations with no particular association having an over-riding influence. When one considers distance and local needs, it is easy to understand why a local chapter is so important. The next meeting of "The Ridge" will be in the first week of November, I will be attending this meeting on behalf of the FGCSA and will be prepared to offer any help they may request. All of the local state chapters have volunteered information on their respective chapters concerning their setup and the guidelines they use to operate. This information will go a long way in helping this group get rolling. I will be reporting in future issues as to the progress of this group. Congratulations, Mark! MARK'S COMMENTS: I just want to express my sincere appreciation for the very great honor of receiving the Florida GCSA's "Distinguished Service Award This is by far the most significant recognition I have ever received and I will cherish it for the rest of my life. I am proud to be a member of an association of such dedicated and honorable professionals, and for this reason, consider it a privilege to contribute my time and effort I highly recommend such participation to every member of the Florida GCSA — you will receive much more in return than you will ever give. • At EXCERPT! Oi ii ill iiiimii 11 «M.k* Ma hi The 1988 FGCSA Tampa Board Meeting was held on Saturday, October 8, 1988, in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Tampa. The meeting was called to order by President, Cecil Johnston at 1:00 p.m. All Officers and External Vice Presidents were present except for Gulf Coast chapter. GCSAA Conference and Show: Randy Nichols, GCSAA 1990 Conference and Show Committee Chairman, gave a report on the 1990 Convention which will be held in Orlando. Registration is expected to be approximately 13,000 with 375,000square feet allotted to the Trade Show area. The GCSAA will provide 35 seminars and the Peabody Hotel will be the headquarters hotel. Mike Perham, FGCSA Chairman of the 1989 and 1990 Conferences, gave a report on his committees progress. We will have our FGCSA booth setup at both Shows. Mike suggested that members' wives may be available to man the booth when conflicts occur. Bonnie Stevenson is the GCSAA Show Coordinator. It was decided that the FGCSA would give something away at the Anaheim show (such as a bag tag) that would serve as advertisement for the Orlando show and then we might consider a larger giveaway item at the Orlando show. Dan Jones would like to print an extra Commemorative Issue of the Florida Green that would be sent to Early Bird Registrants only. Janet Rose, GCSAA Membership Chairman, estimated that 1,500 superintendents would take advantage of Early Bird Registration. National advertisers and local Orlando tourist attractions and restaurants would be approached to advertise in this special issue in order to offset the cost involved. The issue would not be sent to the regular Florida Green mailing list — only to those who are actually attending the Conference. Mike Perham suggested that we make some arrangements with the Orlando airport to have a Welcome Center or at least a banner prominently displayed as travelers come in for the show. Tom Benefield reports to the Board, The Ridge Chapter is coming of age. • Randy Nichols distributed the "Guidelines for host chapters during the GCSAA Golf Championships" which outlines the duties expected of us as the host chapter.
