Those who attended were treated to good education and camaraderie. At the annual luncheon, Tom Alex had the distinguished pleasure of introducing (roasting) this year's Wreath of Grass Award Winner Joel Jackson. Joel, sitting next to me at the table was completely surprised. All of his diligence and hard work as a superintendent, writer, editor, communicator and friend to many has been recognized. Congratulations! We are always striving to find ways to improve our award-winning magazine, The Florida Green. Recently, a new chapter roundup section has been added which will update us all on your chapter events, fundraisers, educational programs, holiday parties or individual member accomplishments such as newly certified (CGCS or ACSP). We also are looking for writers for articles as well as "Hands On" articles. The Florida Green does pay $100.00 per page and $50.00 for one to three pictures. The preferred method of submission is via email. Government Relations: Methyl Bromide Update - GCSAA did in fact submit a Critical Use Exemption application to the EPA as reported in the last issue. In the meantime at the state level, Matt Taylor, GCS at the Royal Poinciana Club and Wiley McCall, President of Emerald Island Turf flew to Tallahassee on September 16th and met with staffers from Agriculture Commissioner's Office. The purpose was to get sod production and golf course planting fumigation covered by an existing Methyl Bromide exemption that deals with nursery stock and transported plant material under quarantine concerns. Several other southern states already have this and Florida is hopping on the band wagon. Let's hope their efforts will be successful to preserve the limited use of MeBr by the turf industry. The EGCSA hosted a tournament on October 5th at Bonita Bay East to help raise funds for environmental education aimed at school kids and the general public. Ellen Lindblad, Executive Director told me the education wouldn't be "ANTI" anything, but rather to show how we all need to coexist with our natural resources. Several general CREW members and supporters visited our FGCSA display and we exchanged praiseworthy comments on the benefits of working together instead of in conflict. The South Florida team drove up a day early to play a practice round and it obviously paid off as all members of the team shot scores in the 70's to crush the opposition. Dates are Monday, 12/2 at Pelican Sound GC in Estero, Tuesday at Mizner CC in Delray Beach, Thursday 12/5 at ChampionsGate Golf Resort in Davenport and Friday 12/6 at Sugarmill Woods CC in Homosassa. The morning begins with USGA representatives John Foy and Todd Lowe discussing how to make golf courses friendly to golfers and wildlife - Integrating Payability with Habitat. A panel discussion highlighting Stewardship in Action follows with case studies and local resources. Joellen Zeh, Staff Ecologist with Audubon Internation will discuss Site Assessment. The afternoon part of the program concentrates totally on Environmental Planning. Any golf course that submitted an Environmental Plan prior to 1/1/02 will have to re-submit on new certification forms so this is a great opportunity to get up-to-date. This workshop is designed to walk you through the Site Assessment and Environmental Plan. You will leave with this important first step completed. Take this opportunity to get started on certification. Programs will vary slightly at each site. You do not have to be a member of the ACSP to attend. GCSAA CEU's have been applied for. Fee for the program which includes lunch is $40 if paid by November 22nd and $50 if paid after November 22nd. Reference books will be available on site. We encourage you to bring your Resource Advisory Committee or anyone that will be helping you work toward certification. For more information on the workshops or to get directions to one of the golf courses call Shelly Foy, USGA, at 772546-2620 or sfoy@usga.org. 2003 Florida Reception to be held Thursday, February 13th The FGCSA will hold its annual GCSAA Reception on Thursday night, February 13th, at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis hotel from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. The reception will be limited to Florida superintendents, assistants and to the sponsors of the reception.
