I wasn't very good at it, but each issue got better. After a while, members began to compliment my work, and we even won a couple of awards from the GCSAA. I was proud to accept them for our chapter. Two years ago I accepted the position of External Vice President for the West Coast chapter, and shortly thereafter, I attended my first FGCSA board meeting. My voice was wavering and my knees were knocking as I timidly volunteered to be chairman of a committee to investigate professional licensing. If the Past President had not assured everyone that I could handle the assignment, I wonder if they would have accepted my offer. One year ago I accepted the position of president of the West Coast chapter and again my voice was wavering and my knees were knocking at that first meeting. I feel we accomplished a great deal during my term and I am sure that I am much better at conducting meetings than I was a year ago. In August, I accepted the position of President of the FGCSA. i have learned to control my voice and knees (most of the time) but I still get excited when I hear a new idea at a board meeting or discuss how the FGCSA can help us improve our courses and profession. My point is this: if you are able to contribute in some way to this association, do not measure the benefits only on the basis of what you may give or receive. Selfimprovement is also an important benefit that can be gained through participation. If you have the opportunity and time to participate in any way, please do yourself a favor and volunteer. We need you... and YOU NEED YOU. • T 1988-1989 Chapter Officers Congratulations to the following recently elected 1988-89 local chapter officers. These superintendents perform a valuable service by donating their time to serving their chapter members. In addition to handling local chapter matters, they are the communications liaisons between the state association and the local chapter. The FGCSA Education Committee's "Selling Your Program" seminar held at the Crowfoot open was an overwhelming success to all those superintendents who attended. Besides earning valuable CEU's toward their GCSAA Recertification and for their Florida Pesticide License, they left the seminar with a wealth of information. Due to a last minute cancellation by Oscar Miles, the time schedule of the seminar had to be re-arranged. Frank Dobie, superintendent from Sharon Golf Club, Sharon Center, Ohio, extended his talk on golf course renovation to include an upbeat presentation on self image which was well received by the 28 superintendents attending. Jack Siebenthaler, Executive Director of the American Society of Consulting Arborists, presented a slide show on proper tree selection for golf courses. Dr. Monica Juhnke, Plant Pathologist from I FAS in Ft. Lauderdale, also extended her program to include a discussion on the mode of action of systemic and contact fungicides. This presentation led to a lively and extremely informative question and answer period on proper day-to-day fungicide applications. • Everglades Snatches Crowfoot From Central Florida by Joe Ondo, Golf Chairman Central Florida proved itself cordial hosts for the second year in a row by not winning its own tournament after 3 successive years as team winner. The "New Course" at Grand Cypress was the facility used for this year's tournament and everything was in great shape for superintendents and suppliers from all over the state. The Everglades team of Jerry Redden, Mark Black, Richard Kaiser and Ron Richards won the 1988 Crowfoot Open by 5 shots over the Treasure Coast chapter. Scott Zakany won a match of cards over Lee Bennett for Low Gross Supt. after both men posted fine 69's. Jim Ellison of Central Florida was the Low Net Supt. by winning a match of cards over Richard Lemmel. In the Supplier's Division, Dick Johnson won match of cards over Dick Bessire for Low Gross after both shot 70. Bill Gordon won the Calloway division of suppliers with Bill Buchanan and Jerry Porter finishing 2nd and 3rd. Tom Alex, host supt., and his crew and the Grand Cypress staff are to be thanked for an enjoyable weekend. Larry and Vilma Kamphaus and the Crowfoot Committee made it through another year and look forward to making next year's tournament even better. Hope everyone had a good time, and I'll look forward to seeing everyone at the FTGA Conference in October. • Exc The 1988 FGCSA Crowfoot Board Meeting was held on Saturday, August 6, 1988, in the Executive Meeting Center, Grand Cypress, Orlando. The meeting was called to order by President Dick Blake at 1:15 PM. All Officers and External Vice Presidents were present except for Gulf Coast and Everglades chapters. The minutes of the POA Board Meeting were approved. The President's report was approved. Past President Reed LeFebvre urged all local chapters to submit their nominees for the FGCSA Distinguished Service Award to him before August 15. Research: Chairman Kevin Downing reported on the outcome of the Research Committee meeting held earlier in the day. The Research Committee recommended that the FGCSA present the following projects to the FTGA for funding: 1) Pursue various bermudagrass varieties in South Florida; 2) Build a USGA green either at a private club or the I FAS center. If this green proved to be a successful research tool, we would then build another green in Central or North Florida. This would be a long term commitment. 3) Perform product evaluation for short term problems. The FGCSA would be the direct funding source, but we would subcontract the work to IFAS or another private experimental site. If a product evaluation proved that specific claims made by the developer were false, the information would be published. Kevin pointed out that IFAS often works through the County Extension Agents. Many superintendents do not utilize their Extension Agents. It was suggested that all local chapters make their Extension Agent an Honorary Member of their chapter. Tom Benefield made a motion the Research Committee be empowered to speak for the FGCSA in letting the FTGA know our specific needs. The motion was approved. jerpts from 1988 CROWFOOT Board Meeting.. Publications Committee: Dan Jones made the final presentation on the Desktop Publishing System that he is recommending. The system would consist of two identical Apple computers to be located at the Florida Green office and one at the FGCSA office. The total cost for the system with related software packages would be approximately $18,000. Dan Jones presented the summer issue of Florida Green. Due to increased printing costs, the rates for advertising have now been increased from 10 to 40% in order to maintain the quality and professionalism desired. Mike Perham C.G.C.S. (right) 1990 Conference Chairman reviews the Anaheim Brochure with Mary Roberts, FGCSA Executive Secretary(left.) Green Sheet: Mike Bailey again urged local chapter secretaries to send in all local news before the printed deadline date for submitting material. All copies of the July/August issue were sent by first class mail. Education: After much discussion, the Board suggested that some of the seminars being offered by the Education Committee would be better received if they were offered in conjunction with local chapter meetings. Mike Perham made a motion that the Committee scrap its intended project of sending the FTGA Hire/Fire booklet to all FGCSA members. The motion carried. The board agreed that education is very important to our structure and therefore approved a $4,000 budget for education, which is a 300% increase over last year. FTGA: Mark Jarrell suggested that we find out how effective the FTGA Conference and Show is to our members. He urged our members to stop at the FGCSA booth and fill out a critique of the educational programs and the show itself. Membership: Cecil Johnston introduced Bobby Ellis, superintendent at Lake Region Y& CC. Bobby reported that he has an informal group of ten to fifteen superintendents who work in an area that is bordered by West Coast and Central Florida Chapters, his area could possibly become a chapter of the FGCSA. The Board agreed to offer the services of our Executive Secretary to help coordinate their membership drive. budget and the changes that had been made to some budgetary requests. The budget was approved at $22,000. Desk Top Publishing System: A motion was made that we approve of Dan Jones' recommendation for a DTPS as presented by Nynex with a stipulation that the FGCSA and the Florida Green share the cost equally. The motion was approved. Survey: A discussion was held on the pros and cons of a state wide survey. Mike Bailey will look into this project. The Annual Meeting was scheduled for immediately after this meeting was adjourned. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Saturday, October 8, in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Tampa. Golf: Joe Ondo reported that the entry fee for the 1989 GCSAA golf tournament is $290/man. The Board voted to field a four man team at a cost of $1,160. Membership Cards: We will continue to supply membership cards to all superintendents which include their local chapter designation. A suggestion was made that we look into providing a window decal for all members. Mike Bailey volunteered to look into this project. Public Relations: The 1990 Conference and Show Committee consists of Mike Bailey, Mark Jarrell, Dan Jones, and Mike Perham. Mike Perham will act as Chairman for the 1989 Conference and Show Committee. Budget: Joel Jackson presented the Secretary/Treasurers report. He discussed the proposed 1988-89 Could this be Immediate Past President; Dick Blake, packing his bags after the FGCSA Board Meeting? Definitely NOT. But even though, you dedicated greens keepers must still go see the sequel. You remember the original classic; complete with "The famous whacking of the flowers at Augusta, the Milorganite stacked in the maintenance barn, and the assistant's five year program." Well, as much as the original had, the sequel has not. It has been said a sequel can never match the original. Once again, this truth prevails. And there was so much to capitalize upon. Caddy Shack II could have been a real classic. I mean after all, what happened to Bill Murray? Did he ever become a "head greens keeper?" Did all those tulips ever grow back? Did the Baby Ruth sink to the bottom of the pool? This time Chevy Chase goes Ford (check out his left ear lobe). Jacky Mason gives it a good college try to out rage Rodney, and perhaps even does. But that's about it. The only real star in the movie is the gopher. Perhaps this one has been buried for good. Please, if we have a Caddy Shack III, let's get back to the good ol' days: when greens keepers were greens keepers, and the rich were rich. This one gets a one gopher.
