Once again, a delegation was sent to Tallahassee in order to fortify our legislative relationships in the Capitol this year. Mike Goldie, our lobbyist, deserves huge credit as he arranged an outstanding schedule of visits with Representatives and Senators. It has become ever more apparent to me that Mike has earned tremendous respect from all of the legislators that we were able to meet. Thanks to Mike for all you do for us! While in Tallahassee, we also extended an invitation to the Gulf Coast GCSA to become more involved with the FGCSA. Scott Sewell, CGCS, one of their directors, was able to spend a couple of days with us. Hopefully, he got to know us and will take the word back to his chapter as to what we are all about. Obviously, we want to include as many superintendents as possible from all portions of the state as valuable members of our association. We will stay in touch with the Gulf Coast Chapter leaders and hope to include them in all we do in the near future. Many thanks go out to our own Jeff Heggen from the Coastal Plains Chapter for having the vision to want to see the Gulf Coast inclusion in our association. Our agenda, as usual, will be loaded with important information and issues to discuss.Prior to the Board meeting, Hannes Combest, from the GCSAA, will guide us through a halfday strategic planning session. She will help us evaluate our current association procedures and goals as well as for the long range (5-10 years). This should be an interesting forum. We would also like to invite all of the FCGS A past presidents to attend. The planning session will be held from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on Thursday, May 12. Don't forget the seminar on Friday, May 13, presented once again by Patt Schwab. Her seminar last year was extremely popular and enjoyable. The topic this year is called "Situational Leadership for High Turn-Over Staffs" and should prove to be equally as interesting and entertaining. I am personally looking forward to the Poa weekend and, after all of these meetings and seminars, hope to relax and join as many of you as possible around the pool and Tiki Bar. See you there. -"IMIi •] - r What's Up D.O.C.? by Joel Jackson ing brought by farm workers in south Florida claiming exposure to pesticides has caused a cluster of birth defects. Check out how to volunteer for future committee volunteer service at GCSAA's website www.gcsaa.org. It is a great learning experience personally, and gives you an opportunity to participate in your professional association in a meaningful way. One of the best ways to work at the national level is to become active at the local level first, since GCSAA likes to get references from local chapters on those who volunteer at the national level. FTGA: Don't forget, the 2005 FTGA Conference and Show will be moving to the Hyatt Hotel at Coconut Point in Bonita Springs this coming September 12th - 15th. This new venue will have everything including the golf tournament within easy reach. 3. Education: There will be two GCSAA seminars in May that I am aware of. (1) Tuesday, May 3rd, the Central Florida GCSA will host a 1-day (.7 education points) seminar on "Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer" taught by Dr. Grady Miller (U. of Florida) and Dr. Kevin Frank (Michigan State U.). You may register and get more information on line at www.gcsaa.org. (2) and the FGCS A will host a 1/2-day GCSAA Leadership seminar (.35 education points) titled "Situational Leadership" taught by the entertaining and educational Dr. Patt Schwab on Friday, May 13th at the Naples Beach Hotel during the Poa Annua Classic. You don't have to register for the Poa Classic to attend this seminar. Call Marie Roberts at 800-732-6053 for registration information. 4. Media/Public Relations: An article on pesticides in the Charlotte Harbor watershed ran in the SW Florida Sun-Herald recently. Besides the negative innuendos and inferences it contained very few hard facts other than to say five herbicides had been found in the water. The only one labeled for use on golf courses was simazine. The overall tone and credibility of the article was highly suspect when this quote appeared, "The EPA has not calculated the toxicity of atrazine, the primary ingredient of the popular herbicide Roundup." Most allied associations I contacted decided not to respond to this article. I did however, email the reporter and alerted him to the factual error above and offered to be a source to check facts the next time. He apologized and thanked me and said "the inaccuracy must have been due to faulty note taking." Membership in this chapter includes many SE Alabama and SW Georgia superintendents. We invited Gulf Coast Director Scott Sewell to join us in Tallahassee to see what we are doing for all superintendents, so he can report back to his chapter. On a positive note, the Palm Beach Post, which often blasts agriculture and pesticide users ran a very positive article on the South Florida Turf Expo, and of course was amazed at the education and complexity of proper turf management and the training turf managers and technicians undergo and the continuing education they pursue. 6. FGCSA Publications: Remember to share your chapter news with us or write a handson article. Upcoming topics are listed inside the front cover of every issue next to the Table of Contents. Get published in the Florida Green. We pay for articles and photos. Don Benham just sent me an article from the Bradenton paper, The East County Observer, and the title was, "Technology, careful planning debunk golf course myths " The article quoted superintendents, UF professors and folksfromAudubon International. It was nice to see a fair and balanced article for a change. The gist of the article was to inform readers that golf courses when managed properly are great wildlife habitats and do not pose problems for the environment. We all know that, but the public needs to see and hear, and in this case they did. Another side benefit to the Spring Regulatory Tour: Since we have to rent the 6-8 passenger golf carts for the week for the week, Tim also takes this time to tour 5th graders from a nearby elementary school. This year 120 students and 20 teachers/parents got to see what golf courses are all about. I have entered several Golfdom and Florida Green columns and articles in the 2005 Turf & Ornamental Communicators Writing Awards Contest and will be attending their annual meeting in Memphis, TN to network with other green industry writers, editors and advertisers. 5. Chapter Relations: Jeff Heggen and Shane Bass from the Coastal Plains GCSA have volunteered to assist the Gulf Coast GCSA in finding more ways to participate in and support the Florida GCSA since many of our programs benefit all Florida superintendents. The Gulf Coast GCSA membership is spread out along a 200 mile stretch from Tallahassee to Pensacola, so meeting attendance is a challenge. In order to facilitate meetings, the chapter is divided into three zones: East, Central and West. Don't forget the Florida Green Photo Contest is in full swing. The new 2005 contest year began with the Fall 2004 issue. The contest runs until August with entries post marked before August 1 . Photos, slides and digital photos accepted. Digital photos must be high enough resolution (300 dpi or higher) for publication quality and saved in jpeg or TIF format. See the latest issue of the Florida Green for contest rules. st 7. The pre-Expo storms didn't damper the spirits of the inquiring minds of those who sought the latest research information conducted on the FGCS A Research Green. Despite the nasty weather the night before, the sun shone brightly on the 500 attendees gathered for the 18th Annual Expo in Fort Lauderdale on March 24th. South Florida GCSA members and Unuiversity of Florida staff members were up bright and early that morning shuffling tables and chairs, resetting tents, juggling equipment and generally working hard to make the Expo another outstanding success. Again this year the ever loyal major sponsors - Hector Turf, Kilpatrick Turf and Environmental Turf ~ as well as the ten equipment demonstrators and thirty three booth sponsors were responsible for setting a new record in raising funds for the research projects at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center. Gross revenue for the day topped $40,000, setting a new gross income record in the 18 year history of the Expo. After expenses, all proceeds go to support the upkeep and maintenance of the FGCS A research green and REC turf plots.
