From the editor's desk A Dear John letter Dear John, I read your recent Presidents Message and I just want you to know I took your advice to heart. I threw away the golf clothes and put on the funky t-shirt and camouflage shorts. I didn’t once think about work, but wearing a Mets t-shirt gave me more stress than a GCSAA pullover. I got a physical and tried to get some rest. The word being “tried” because with John Franco as my closer I’m not getting any rest. As you suggested, I took my wife out to an early dinner at 4:30 pm. The problem was we went to Carmines in NYC and didn’t get home until 1 am. No need for flowers the garlic bread was awesome. My children always greet me after a long day at work and in a blink of an eye they ask can we go to the pool, can we go fishing, can we go to the video store?... I touch base with fellow superintendents answering machines all the time. Usually two days later they reach mine. Networking is tuff for me because of my Met status. This is a state of Yankee fans, Phillies Phans, closeted Red Sox fans, and yes even one Cub faithful. Hey Roger, remember 1969? Yes John, I have been taking time out for myself during the 100 Days of Hell and I’m feeling much better thank you. I can’t wait until November 3, 4, and 5 for the stress free 2004 Crystal Conference and Golf Classic. I hope to see you and the rest of our association there. Sincerely yours, The editor and his three children taking a Sunday canoe ride. Is that a golf hat? On the cover: Inset: The devilish par 3 no. 10 hole of the Pine Valley Golf Club. After a three day Member Guest tournament and two weeks of aerification, I needed a re-charge of my batteries. I just returned from two days at Hershey Park riding roller coast ers and water rides with my family, no golf attire was worn. Tomorrow I am leaving for three days of exercise, walking the dunes at Whistling Straits at the PGA Championship, golf attire will be worn, a nice break. Special Thanks: Every once in a while someone does something really special for GCSANJ and the GCSANJ Foundation, so I would like to acknowledge their efforts. On July 16, 2004 I received a letter from Tim Christ from Metedeconk National Golf Club announcing that beginning TURF PRODUCTS CORPORATION PO Box 296 • Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046 We Specialize in the odd and the unusual • GRASS SEED • TURF TOOLS • COURSE ACCESSORIES • FUNGICIDES • HERBICIDES • TURF EQUIPMENT Call us at: 973-263-1234 this year the GCSANJ Foundation will be receiving 50% of the money raised from The Robert Trent Jones Invitational. Last year $30,000.00 was raised at the Invitational. Tim felt that by giving this money to the Foundation we would have more funds to support Turf Research directly affecting the Tri State Area. Tim approached Metedeconk’s President, Mr. Bob Manzo and Green Chairman, Mr. Jim Kelly with his idea and they agreed to commit these funds for the next three years. The remaining 50% will continue to be directed to GCSAA through the Environmental Institute for Golf. The Institute is GCSAA’s research fund that supports Turfgrass Research throughout the country. The Robert Trent Jones Invitational normally has good attendance from New Jersey clubs. It would be great to see an even larger attendance from our members. If you normally do not receive an invitation to this great event and would like to attend, contact Tim Christ at 732-928-4639. Again, thank you to Metedeconk National Golf Club, their President Bob Manzo, Green Chairman Jim Kelly and Golf Course Superintendent Tim Christ for this extremely generous donation. Kuhns CGCS It is very hard to imagine that my first two-year term on the GCSAA board is winding down and the next election is just around the comer. What a great experi ence it has been serving the membership of GCSAA. As a board member, I have had the opportunity to work with eight other very dedicated and hard working individuals. Working with Steve Mona and our staff at GCSAA has been a truly remarkable experience. Our staff is truly dedicated to our profession and the future of our association. Over the last two years, the board has spent many hours working on a results-based governance system. This system will help GCSAA measure the progress associated with our mission, vision and goals. We now have in place 35 specific indicators that will gauge our performance and achievements over a given period of time. Our CEO will spend more time focusing on these indicators and will be evaluated based on his success in achieving our goals. As board members, we now have a clear delineation between our responsibilities and that of the CEO and staff. The board can now spend valuable time working on important issues facing our membership and the future of GCSAA. I have had the opportunity to chair several committees over the past two years. I have served on the Certification committee for almost five years and had the opportunity to chair this committee in 2004. After many hours and days of dedicated service, our committee has developed a new set of standards and guidelines for the “Certified Golf Course Superintendent”. The new portfolio requirement and our new test will undoubtedly set a very high standard for persons achieving the CGCS status. Becoming certified was never an easy task. The new requirements will only help to strengthen the credibility of our certification program. I am very proud to have been a part of this dedicated group and the many accomplishments that we achieved. We must be constantly upgrading our educational programs to reflect the current needs of our members. Most organizations would only hope to achieve what we have had in place for years. Our members know the importance of education as reflected by the thousands that participate in our many educational opportunities. Over the last two years, the board has spent many hours working on a results-based governance system. I am very proud to serve on the board of GCSAA. I am proud to be a part of the decision making process and to be a representative of such a dynamic organization. I have spent the last two years working with committees, visiting chapters, developing budgets and working with staff to mold the future programs of our association. I have had the oppor tunity to grow intellectually as well as professionally and I will continue to grow and develop in my role as a director. GCSANJ has been very supportive in my endeavors to serve on the national board. Trust in people doesn’t come easy and you have put your trust in me to serve on your behalf. As a board member, I will work very hard to earn your trust and support. I will work very hard with my col leagues to develop the many new programs and services that will create a brighter future for our profession. I want to thank our president, John O’Keefe, for nomi nating me on behalf of GCSANJ. John is a dedicated leader with a keen understanding of the goals and future needs of our organization. I also want to thank Jim McNally for his support in his role as Chapter Delegate. Jim has been very instrumental in rounding up the votes and working closely with other states and various chapters to develop support. John Hyland and I were in line waiting to enter when Joel Jacquemot CGCS was exiting to get one of his employees into the show so they could help work his booth. Joel told us to wait and soon returned with some badges. Once inside we headed over to The Club at Morgan Hill booth which had some beautiful pictures of Joel’s new creation. These photos worked on me because I knew that I wanted to play this course and also thought of our pressing need for a June site for the GCSANJ meeting. I asked if he would be willing to host such a meet ing and he readily agreed. I then had to ask if he would still be there for the meeting. He smiled because he remembered the Royce Brook meeting that he hosted for us even though he had changed jobs just days before the actual meeting. The next step was to check with John O’Keefe for his okay. Normal meeting sites are one thing but since this course was located in Pennsylvania I wanted him to be aware of what we were planning. I called him from the show floor. He thought about it and then gave his blessing. We picked June 22nd and agreed to discuss costs later on but Joel said that he would do whatever we needed and make it fit our budget. Mr. Hyland and I spent most of the day walking and buying (sorry John but I know Mrs. Hyland won’t read this) and just feeling content that our 2004 schedule was now complete. I later came to realize that Joel had forgotten to mention that they were still in the construction phase but he knew that he would be ready and he was. They had their Grand Opening in early June and we were their first outing. The weather for this meeting did not look very good and did keep the attendance to a low figure. Severe lightning and rain were predicted for the entire day and was accurate right up until Joel asked it to stop and it did. We were clear for the entire meeting and when we were finished the rain started again. Joel or his superintendent Douglass Gonzales must have some influence with the rain gods because that was not supposed to happen. George McRoberts from Tuckahoe Sand and Gravel once again sponsored the lunch and as usual it really helps with the bottom line. This also goes to all of the affiliates who sponsor Jim Cross and Dennis DeSanctis, Sr. show off their winnings from the meeting at Morgan Hill G.C. so many things at our meetings. We could not do it without you. During this lunch we were able to listen to Kelly Blake- Moran discuss all of the issues that were involved with this project. The venue: Liam “The Dog” Murray’s Charleston Springs South Golf Course. Their opponents: Hyland and Anasiewicz. Glassy eyed and filled with trepidation, the team of Hyland and Anasiewicz entered the lions den to bring down the reigning the Champs. After an exchange of parking lot pleasantries that amounted to a shouting match instigated by Hyland’s profusion (foam in mouth): “Hey... you want a piece of us”! Crowder: “It has been said that winning the Leslie Cup has been carriage with the same accomplishments as to the Ryder, Walker, and Curtis Cups, what are your feelings?” Pease: “Not a day goes by that the GCSANJ world of spirited competition gazes upon this as the most prestigious event held by this esteemed organization”... RUTGERS news The Cicada Killer Wasp By William J. Sciarappa, Ph.D. Few insects can compare with the alarm caused by Cicada Killer Wasps-Sphecius speciosus. These large solitary wasps are also known as Giant Cicada killers or Sand Hornets. This last common name is a misnomer because they are not true hornets. Despite their very large size, dangerous appearance and “dive-bombing” habit, adults rarely contact people or sting. In fact, the “dive-bombing” male does not even have a stinger and is merely faking a fierce attack. The oviposi tor of the female is a tubular egg-laying structure that can function as a very weak stinger. Her mild sting is similar in feel to a slight pin scratch and is not considered painful. Nonetheless, without accurate identification and knowledge, this menacing “bluff’ often succeeds in causing fear, anxiety and occasional panic. The adults range in size from 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches in length for females and about 1 and 1 3/4 inches for males. Both sexes are strikingly colored black, red and yellow which is similar to the warning coloration of common social wasps like yellow jackets which do posses painful stingers. Cicada Killer Wasps have a thick-waisted black body that is striped with yellow across the middle section (thorax) and the first three segments of the rear section (abdomen). Most of the head and parts of the thorax are a dull red. All six legs are brightly colored and orangish-red. All four yellowish wings are held straight out when at rest, which is in contrast to most other wasps which fold their wings along their body. Pest Problem Golfers, homeowners and picnickers often become fright ened when in close proximity to Giant Cicada Killers. These wasps can become an unwelcome nuisance as males con stantly patrol their underground nesting sites. Male wasps may aggressively fly right up to people in defense of their nest even through they cannot sting. Females are less com monly observed but when captured or mishandled can inflict a mild sting. Her stinger is primarily used to paralyze prey and rarely used in defense except when trapped in clothing or disturbed by lawn equipment. If accidentally stung there is no cause for alarm except for individuals who are especially sensitive to bee or wasp stings. They excavate noticeable amounts of soil around their tunnel entrance and create unsightly mounds. Large soil particles are removed with mouth parts and then shoveled through their legs in a dog-like manner. Aggregations of individual tunnels can easily exceed 100 in number and last for many years. For these cosmetic and psychological reasons, the wasp could be considered a turf grass pest, although this insect is essentially harmless. Biology Cicada Killer Wasps feed on tree sap and flower nectar as individual adults. Females fly around trees, shrubs, meadows and open areas in search of their only prey species-Cicada species. The Cicada is used as food to rear the next genera tion of wasps. The female wasp strikes and stuns the Cicada which reacts with a loud shrieking buzz. Both of these very large insects tumble to the ground where the stinger is then utilized to paralyze the Cicada. This relatively huge prey is laboriously dragged up a tree or tall plant. The Cicada is often held upside down and straddled, after which the wasp takes off and glides home to the nest. The female drags the Cicada through the entrance open ing, down the tunnel and into the nesting chamber. She oviposits an egg on the legs of the prey and seals off the cell. Wasp larvae hatch within a few days and penetrate the exoskeleton of the immobilized food source. Larvae feed on the internal tissues and over winter as mature larvae within a tough, brown-colored cocoon. A month long pupation in June leads to adult emergence in July, completing the life cycle. Emergence overlaps with the main availability of the food supply for their nests. This next generation of adults will again dig tunnels, capture Cicadas and live two to three months from July to September. At the bottom of the burrow a chamber is constructed with three or four earthen cells. Each cell is stocked with one or two prey for each larva. Additional chambers may be made off the main tunnel branch with additional cells. This nesting structure may house a dozen or more cells. Control Control measures are seldom required because Cicada Killer Wasps rarely sting people and only fly as adults for less than two months. If wasp numbers are high or the nests are located in a particularly sensitive area, several control methods have proven successful. With low populations, an aggregation can be quickly eliminated with the use of a butterfly net or an accurate forearm smash with a tennis racket. Well-aimed aerosol in secticide sprays can repel and reduce patrolling male wasps. Eye, head and body protection is advisable in pursuing this direct capture and control approach. When several tunnels are situated together, a large clear plastic trap will overheat the ground and deny access. When resorting to insecticides against nesting sites, several compounds are available for the homeowner but dust formulations are the most effective. Applications should be made around and into the entrance hole just before sunset or before sunrise to work best as the female will unknowingly carry the toxicant to the brood chamber. Spray timing needs to be early in the lifecycle, generally in July, while the adult is still provisioning the nest after which larvae are sealed off Continues on page 21 U.S. Silica's Golf Sand Capabilities Have Grown • Custom-Blends •-Divot-Mixes •-Pro-White™-Bunker-Sand •-Sure-Play®-Root-Zone-Mixes •-Sure-Play -Drainage-Media Our Products Meet USGA Recommendations Trust U.S. Silica for expertise and technical support when selecting either construction or maintenance materials.
