She consistently threw a variety of nasty curveballs and high heat at golf course superintendents in an attempt to knock them down. And she did. But we took the shave and we took the haircut, shook off the dust and got back into the box. We can do this because we are surrounded by great industry teammates. We have our vendors, out tech rep’s., our salesmen. We have the GCSAA, the NJTA, and the Tri-State. We have Rutgers, Penn State, and UMass. And sitting in the dugout for every game is the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of New Jersey. Together we make up the greatest team to take on any obstacle thrown at us. And together we can make 2006 a home run. Watch for chin music. The editor took some chin music from Mother Nature numerous times in 2005. © 2005 THE GREENERSIDE Opinions expressed in this Newsletter are the opinions of the authors and do not necessarily express the opinions or policies of the GCSANJ Board and its membership. If you know of a neighbor or friend superintendent, assistant superintendent, or vendor who is not a member, encourage them to join. The real strength of our association is you the member. Best wishes for the holidays and for a strong and vibrant 2006! I am honored to have been elected as your President for the coming year and I thank the membership for their confidence and support. I would also like to thank the Officers and Directors who serve the GCSANJ membership throughout the year. Without their hard work our association could not exist. Thank you to Bruce Peeples for his years of service on the Board of Directors culminating in his term as President. His dedication and insight has been both inspirational and innovative. Thank you Jim McNally who served on the board for many years, most recently as our Treasurer. Jim worked tirelessly to organize our finances and manage the funds that keep this association strong. As he leaves the board we are thankful for his dedication and support. Jim will remain as our GCSAA Voting Delegate for the immediate future. Also leav ing the board this year is Greg Nicoll, a District II Director. Working with Doug Vogel and Todd Raisch, Greg has been instrumental in retaining a new printer for the Greenerside and setting up our website, GCSANJ.org. Greg also worked hard to find a new vendor for GCSANJ merchandise and was instrumental in streamlining the ordering process. Thank you to Greg Nicoll for his service. All of these gentlemen gave of their personal and professional time to help run your professional organization. Please take the time to thank them in person the next time you see them. The new officers have been elected and the results of election for District Directors will be known by the time you receive this issue of The Greenerside. We had several people express their interest in running for election as Director this year. With as many as four positions available, the level of interest from our members was exceptional. Regardless of the results of the District Director races, I hope this trend continues and those that are not elected this year will join others in the future to run for office. Serving on the GCSANJ board is challenging, rewarding, educational, and yes even fun at times. If you don’t have an interest in serving on the board, PLEASE consider serving on a committee. There is plenty of work to be done each year and our committee members are crucial to the success of our association. It’s easy to get involved, just call any of the board members and we will get you started. Come on, get involved, you won’t be disappointed! He worked there for eight years eventually becoming the first employee hired by new superintendent Dan Quast to work on the golf course. He later moved on to the Rutgers Golf Club for three years. In 1978 Shaun was hired by the W.A. Cleary Chemical Company and was mentored by the legendary Dr. Paul Sartoretto. He went on to be a technical representative for numerous chemical companies thanks to the mergers and acquisition roller coaster of the chemical business. Shaun currently represents Bayer Environmental Science. It was in 1983 that Barry started to help out with GCSANJ meetings. He was elected by his peers to serve on the GCSANJ board during the storied 1987 presidency of Ed Walsh. He has served continuously on the board ever since. It took three years of planning and countless hours of execution. In doing so Kubik had to wear many hats. He went out on the road and doggedly pursued donations from vendors to offset the huge cost of the tent. He personally oversaw the menu that would feed the crew and guests. He acted as the official greeter and kept tabs on the comfort level of all those who visited the tent. If that wasn’t enough Kubik made sure that everything ran under budget. This enabled a check in the amount of $21,533.41 to be presented to the GCSANJ Foundation. The hospitality tent was a source of pride to all GCSANJ members who attended the PGA Championship. It was by far the best set up on the hallowed grounds of Baltusrol. Ken Kubik raised the bar on hospitality tents and if you climb up and take a look he probably had “GCSANJ” engraved on it. GCSANJ news Essex County CC was worth the wait Our monthly meeting schedule in 2005 had fewer dates then usual on our calendar. It was not by design but rather because it is just harder to get clubs to give up a day for us to use their facilities. As our state suffered through what hopefully would be considered “A 100 Year Summer” it actually might have seemed that we had planned well. The only District able to host a meeting in August was District III and there was no July meeting and our Invitational Team Championship held in September was cancelled for a year. It was good planning if luck is called planning. The GCSANJ Championships were hosted by Jason Thompson and the Essex County Country Club. Greg Armbruster and Brian Minemier present the GCSANJ flag. We finally did get back to having a meeting with our Championship which was at Essex County CC. Our host was Jason Thompson. He had actually requested that his first (hopefully first of many) meeting be one of our major events. The Championship was agreed upon and we had a Continues on page 9 Instead of Every one For Everything Call Us. This was a first and I knew we were in good hands. We have never discussed it but I would think that at some time during this Summer he must have questioned the wisdom of picking this year to host this event. When we got to see his golf course it is also possible that he never once questioned his choice because it was in wonderful condition. I am not sure how he did it but I can assure him that when we got there everybody was truly impressed and quite happy for all of his and his crew’s hard work. It was that good. Unfortunately the field was smaller than normal. Many superintendents just weren’t leaving their courses and when Jason had to cancel carts quite a few people had to cancel also. In addition to that many of our District IV friends (if you call Kevin Driscoll a friend?) woke up to torrential rains so they thought that this is what they were going to see all day. We lost about 10 players because of this rain. They should have called Jason because he told me that we were going to be ok and we were. Our start was delayed by about 15 minutes which did allow us to get some rain. We had 15 holes of totally dry weather and when it did arrive it was so gentle you almost didn’t need a jacket. With rain not being an issue many of our players had great rounds or great shots to remember the day. Some of us just had great memories being there but all had a strong desire to return. Leading all Superintendents with the lowest gross score was Bill Murray. He shot a 77 with a triple bogey. His fine round allows him to now add his name to all of the great names listed on The Sherwood Moore Cup. Joel Collura tied Wendell Beakley with a net 67 but on a match of cards he was awarded the Dr. Henry Indyk Cup. The final big winner was Mark Mason who won the Dr. Paul Sartoretto Cup for being the low gross winner among the affiliates. Continues on page 10 U.S. Silica's Golf Sand Capabilities Have Grown. Cliff Moore was not listed above because his efforts were special, Not only did he have 3 skins but one of them was an eagle which is a double skin so his total was 4 skins. His eagle was on a 567 yard par five and he was inches away from a double-eagle. This was also on a golf course that was wet and the ball really wasn’t running very much after it hit the ground. It was an amazing eagle and one that I think Cliff will remember for a long time. I know I will and I didn’t get to see it. This meeting was also the site of the finals for The Bob Leslie Cup. Rolf Strobel and Brian Lescrinier continued their fine play as they defeated Chuck McMonagle and Ewan MacAulay 5&4. It was a meeting that we will remember fondly for a long time. The weather wasn’t very warm but it was still nice for November. Glenn Miller and Phil Pratt were great hosts. They gave a nice summary presentation of what steps were needed to start and to complete the major changes on the back nine at Manasquan River CC. After this part of the education session was completed everyone jumped into some carts and headed out to see the changes while the first part of this discussion was still fresh in their minds. It was quite evident that not everything turned out as planned but that was to be expected and the finished product was even better then had been hoped. It really opened up some eyes especially those that have not had the pleasure (?) of doing major renovations on your course while still making it fun and playable for your members. Lunch soon followed and with the sponsorship of Lebanon Turf Products it was well worth the wait. We knew that it would be because that is how they do things at this special place. With the time change we had to quickly head out to the course or we would never finish the day. 34 players got to enjoy this gem and as usual some people played just a little better then others but I am sure everyone enjoyed the experience. Kevin Giles shot a very impressive 75 and he has taken possession of the infamous “C” Cup which goes to the best gross score from an assistant. The truly infamous Kerwin Cup could not be located so no prize was given to the as sistant who shot the highest gross score. We hope to have it back for next year. Following in the footsteps of his fellow colleague, Leslie Cup Champ Dave Pease, Murray took home the “top prize” being crowned The State Golf Course Superintendent Champion for 2005. We’re all proud of him here at Monmouth County, and like fine wine, his game has aged “oh so well”... Congratulations Golf Inc. has named Trump National Golf Club Bedminster as its Development of the Year award winner for 2005.
