Around the water cooler While we were all moaning and groaning about 100° temperatures, Dr. Bruce Clarke was doing jumping jacks and high fiving anyone who raised their hand. Rutgers Field Day cooked and Bruce loved it. • Jim Baird has become the human highlight film of the GHL - Geezer Hockey League. His 1st and 2nd playoff goals and penalty for interference earned him the MVP of the mid summer championship. Baird was honored for his clutching of opponents on the ice and cold beverages off. Way to go Jim. • The water cooler man reminds you that the 100 days of hell is almost over and Fall is around the comer. Cheers! Stewart Jr., CGCS TPC at Jasna Polana Early in the month of August I actually made it to the Rutgers Field Day. The day was right in the middle of the heat wave but there were still 250 or so people who knew it was worth it to be there. If we ever get a cloudy day with temperatures in the eighties, there might be double that number. While walking on tour of the plots and various research projects, it became apparent to me that the work that goes on at Rutgers is absolutely cutting edge. The research is always timely, intuitive, valuable and filled with ingenuity. I’m convinced there is no better staff or facility anywhere that can give GCSANJ members the information they need to perform at the highest level in their job. It’s just plain amazing. If you missed the day, you missed a lot. Plan on attending in 2007. Speaking of Rutgers and all they do for us, Dr. Bill Meyer has been nominated by GCSANJ for the 2007 GCSAA Distinguished Service Award. Please take the time this week to write a letter in support of Dr. Meyer’s nomination. His resume of work is second to none and his contributions to our profession are vast. The benefits we receive from his turfgrass breeding work and research will benefit generations of superintendents in the future. Go to the GCSAA website for information on where to fax or send your letter or give me or Dr. Bruce Clarke a call and we will help you with the details. This past week, I made my annual pilgrimage to the annual District III meeting at Tom’s River Country Club. I always look forward to this meeting because of the great job that Ed McSeaman and his small but very capable staff do to maintain the course and because the club does such a great job of making us feel comfortable with great food and atmosphere. This is also one of those meetings every year that reminds me of all the great camaraderie in GCSANJ and the enjoyment of each others company. This year only Dave Pease and band of “pirates” could think a way to make Dennis DeSanctis, Sr, Cell: 610-608-3181 Office: 610-327-3390 Fax:610-327-0581 ddesanctis@aer-core.com 1486 S. Hanover St. Pottstown, PA 19465 www.aer-core.com Turfgrass Services Equipment Sales the day even more fun. With the boats anchored just off the par 3 sixth hole, they managed to take the term “keep your head down” to a new level as players were serenaded in their back swings with continuous short blasts from an air horn. Of course there was also the commensurate vocal encour agement and the return threat to send a ball off a seven iron in their direction to hopefully puncture the hull and sink the noisy bunch! Bill Murray was offered a refreshment if he could swim out to the boat and he couldn’t resist. As they sailed out of sight down river I swear I noticed a skull and crossbones proudly flying from the stem as they disappeared out to sea. After two challenging seasons in a row, it is good to be among such great fellowship. Yes, this season has been another challenge for many of our members to provide the best conditions possible. No, it’s not as bad as last year, but after ten years I now know what they mean when they say there isn’t any turf that actu ally grows well in the Mid-Atlantic Region. With that in mind, congratulations to all of our members who utilized their talents and expertise to come through this past season and provide the playing conditions that so many fine clubs in New Jersey have become accustomed to. The next few weeks will provide the opportunity to reseed, regrass, recuperate, and relax a little for all of us. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meetings in September and October as well as the GCSANJ Fall Seminar at Crystal Springs. Until then.... down the middle! What’s Inside Around the water cooler.....................................2 President's Message..............................................3 Forever Moore....................................................... 4 Calendar.................................................................5 Memories of a Legend.......................................... 8 GCSANJ news.................................................... 12 “Forever Moore” By David R. Pease On July 29th one of the greatest Golf Course Superintendents passed away. The greatest, an over used appellation at times, perhaps, but not in the case of Sherwood Moore. Sherwood’s accomplishments have been well documented and illustrated in the many deserved awards bestowed upon him; however, these accomplishments are only dwarfed by who he was as a man, possessing vision, steadfastness, and family values. His wisdom grew with each step he took as a “Keeper of the Green”. A pioneer in this modem era of Golf Course Management, Sherwood was the Tom Morris of our generations, yes, “generations”... Sherwood’s career spanned over 65 years of professional service. Sherwood applied the inquisitive methodology in manipulating the agronomics of turfgrass management. Seeking new and innovative practices to accomplish the higher standards of turfgrass performance. Sherwood carried these characteristics into a leadership role, to promote the profession of turfgrass management to a new found respectability and notoriety. Along with agronomics Sherwood included the importance of professional leadership values, knowing how important these issues would play in the advancement of the Golf Course Superintendent. Dedicating time to serve the Golf Course Superintendent through his professional affiliations. I for many have had the pleasure to know Sherwood; I know the impact that he has had on the profession, and we all in the Game of Golf have been a benefactor of his unwavering stewardship. There is a kinship between Sherwood Moore and the State of New Jersey which stems from serving at three notable golf courses. However his influence has been much greater and felt from coast to coast, leaving a legacy of protégées to assume the practice of golf course management. Hence, this is the theme of my intent; Sherwood’s influence on others. I found Sherwood, with his presence of power and influence to be an incredibly approachable person, coupled with what could only be described as a lovely sense of humor, spiced with inflection of wit. His charm and character warmed those around him. He has left an indelible mark on the hundreds of lives he came in contact with both professionally and socially. I would like to share just a few of those anecdotal reflections provided to me by those who knew him best. Sherwood always had a willing smile even up to the end. He was very weak and had a hard time speaking, but still had quick wit. One night he asked to be moved in his bed, so his son Glenn had one side of him and me the other. He had shorty P.J.’s on and after moving him 1 said, “Pull them way down”... He started singing a childhood song of his day, “Pull Your Skirts Down Maryann, Pull them way down if you can”... The whole family was there and he had us all laughing. He said, “I know another, but can’t remember the words”. “Let’s call Jack” (his brother in NC). You had to love him... "Skip Cameron” Jack Martin on Sherwood Moore: After getting to know Sherwood very well, I can state that I never heard Sherwood speak badly about anyone. Pat Riley, President of the PGA at the ceremony in Orlando honoring Sherwood upon receiving the “Old Tom Morris Award” in 1990, in describing Sherwood he said, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice”. Ted Horton, on how I became “Superintendent at Winged Foot Golf Club”: Ted, a young assistant at Winged Foot was applying for the Superintendent position just up the road at Woodway Country Club in Darien, Connecticut. During the interview he was questioned, “Mr. Horton, what makes you qualified to be Superintendent at Woodway”? Ted answered, “Well, it’s because I work for the best Superintendent in the Continues on page 5 “Forever Moore” Continued from page 4 business, Sherwood Moore”... The next week Woodway Country Club hired Sherwood as their Superintendent... and subsequently Ted was promoted to Superintendent at Winged Foot... Gordon Witteveen from Canada stated that Sherwood was the “Quintessential Superintendent and my secret idol” after the University of Massachusetts honored Sherwood with an honorary doctorate of science degree. Gordon was a close friend, flew in for the occasion. Sherwood not only touched the lives of those in this country but also abroad in places like Kenya, Egypt, and Mauritius; in 1991 and in retirement Sherwood and his wife Marie became adventurous and joined the International Executives Service Corp as a volunteer. One assignment was to Morocco, where he would stay for three months and show the workers how to maintain a golf course with the crudest of equipment in horrible shape and of course, the language barrier... he was finally given an interpreter by the name of Abdul Taito. They happened to become close friends and kept in fairly close touch throughout the years. Subsequent to Sherwood’s passing Abdul wrote to Glenn Moore. “It is with sadness and deep regret that I learnt the death of my everlasting friend Sherwood. I will not dwell much on his merits and gentlemanly characters, but I pay him tribute by saying: Sherwood, you are not dead, you live at the bottom of my heart, and as long as I live you will not be forgotten”... Abdul Taito James Mwangi, of Kenya: “So deep in my heart you deserve equal honor I give to my parents, I have told so many people that my biological parents gave me life and education, but you Sherwood shaped my destiny”. Geoffrey S. Cornish, ASGCA, Golf Course Architect and Author commenting on Dr Sherwood Moore, CGCS: As one who knew Sherwood for 70 years, I doubt if there is anyone in the turfgrass world that has been more dedicated to the profession and excellence that is part of it, than Sherwood. Moreover, he went out of his way to help others... That person was Sherwood, who provided complete directions but added that he suspected I might not be able to follow them. He turned around and accompanied me in a snow storm to Stockbridge. That was my first encounter with a person who became world renowned... Pioneer Turfgrass educator Professor Lawrence S. Dickinson held immense respect for Sherwood Moore and thought of him as his greatest student. (Note: Prof Dickinson was a legendary figure who established the country's very first college-level course in turfgrass management and science at the University of Massachusetts-“ Mass Aggie ” (Massachusetts Agricultural College). Those who knew Sherwood recognized that he went out of his way to help others and in fact encourage all who endeavored to further excellence and objectives of turfgrass management. Moreover he was relentless advocate of what once seemed to be mundane exercises. Examples: light weight mowing of fairways, contour mowing, and when it seemed that overseeding was often “in vain”, he pointed out “that it is in vain if the seed does not make contact with the soil”... That was Sherwood Moore, who repeatedly demonstrated that the simple things in turfgrass management can be overlooked. After 70 years, I realized that Sherwood Moore was “the essence of quality”, whatever, the playing fields of the Royal and Ancient Game is better because of all that Dr. Sherwood Moore has wrought. Skip Cameron; “I could write a book about the man”, on the eve of Phyllis and me leaving and knowing we would never see each other again, we were alone talking. I thanked him in so many words for all he had done, all the good-times we had together, and I said goodbye. Before I got to the door he said, “Skip, I thank you”. I could not stop; I had to just keep going. I tell this only to show that he was not feeling sorry for himself, but wanted me to know he appreciated our time together... Memories of a Legend By Elliot Lewis CGCS Everyone in our industry was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former superintendent and lifetime member of our association, Al Foster. On a personal level, Al was my former boss, an incred ible mentor, and a very dear friend. I have to attribute a great deal of my enthusiasm for this industry to experiencing his dedication first hand. As an assistant under Al, I learned about understand ing priorities and setting realistic goals. He taught me to be patient, well informed and to take pride in the work that we do. When you were eager to learn, Al was always more eager to teach. I believe this type of mentoring can mean the difference between success and apathy. During his retirement we spoke on a regular basis. He would always ask about my family and their health with genuine concern and interest. Eventually, the conversation would turn to golf courses. I’ve always considered the 50’s through the 70’s to be the golden years of golf, a time when the game was pure and the camaraderie among supers even more so. Al was an important member of our community for all those years. It was not uncommon to see four or five supers and sales reps in Al’s office at the Hackensack GC, debating the merits of a new treatment or product and all of them having a great time in the process. Rogers, CGCS The weather was perfect, the water was gentle and the crowd was grand. You could not have picked a more picture perfect evening. After weeks of miserable weather this River Cruise was just what the doctor ordered. Who would have guessed that 144 people would show up for a good time? We had it!! I arrived at the River Belle dock at approximately 5:45 PM and the crowd was picking up. By 6:15 everyone was present and the cruise was not set to leave for another 15 minutes. AWESOME. I honestly have never seen the kind of support that we received that day. At the tail end of cruise we held the raffle and 1st prize for $250 went to Brent Studer, PGA Golf Professional at Manasquan River Golf Club, 2nd prize for $150 went to Matt Dobbie, Golf Course Superintendent of Bamm Hollow Golf Club, and 3rd prize for $100 went to a very lucky individual that remains nameless. Congratulations to all! I think Brent Studer spent all his winnings and more at the Wharfside Inn following the cruise. The Foundation also gave away a $100 gift certificate for a door prize from the Wharfside Inn and Nancy Wetterling, wife of Green Acres Superintendent Jeff Wetterling, won. Bartlett Science. The music was just loud enough to enjoy and soft enough to have conversation with friends. I remember walking around the cruise several times and noticed a good time had by many. Everyone moved around and mingled with different folks. You could never have guessed there were 144 people plus band and staff aboard. I was not at all surprised about the attendance we had that night. I think the timing was right (midseason) and I believe it’s important to sometimes attend GCSANJ functions with our better half and/or our friends. I believe it’s important for them to talk to others in our business and if not for anything else, to see how great our profession is and to look at the camaraderie we have. What kind of business takes care of their own like ours.
