Around the water cooler We hear the grand old man of green keeping, Sherwood Moore CGCS, now hangs a new shingle. It seems that the 67 year GCSANJ member and former editor is now Dr. Sherwood Moore. Wow! • Speaking of former editors, we hear Ken Krausz is at it again. A five borough bike race in NYC and volunteering as a crew member rebuilding a Bergenfield house on Extreme Makeover. More to come! • A prominent unnamed NJ super was overheard at the Winged Foot Open boasting that “these fairways have nothing on my greens!” • Editor Vogel, after successful hand surgery may come out of retirement this fall and break 100. Maybe. • And finally, the Water Cooler Man was recently offended by the accusation that he is actually Kevin Driscoll. Guess Again. Dear GCSANJ Member, The GCSANJ Board of Directors has approved a membership drive. Applications received from April 1, 2006 through August 31, 2006 will qualify for the prize. The first sponsor listed on the application will be considered the member who referred the new member to GCSANJ. The member referring the most applications approved will be rewarded with a $400 American Express Gift Card. The winner will be presented with gift card at the Crystal Conference and Golf Classic in November. Good luck to all members!! Sincerely, Bradley D. Got your ticket? Climb aboard! What’s Inside Around the water cooler.....................................2 President's Message..............................................3 Sherwood Moore Ph.D........................................ 5 GCSANJ news....................................................... 6 What is the value of your membership in GCSANJ? There are many different answers to that question. Some of us place a high value on the friendship and camaraderie of peers and the ability to associate with one another at a meeting. Others place a high value on the education or learning experience that they may receive by attending the many educational offerings GCSANJ provides through out the year. Still others may place a more basic value on their membership in GCSANJ because it provides the link they need to GCSAA through the dual membership requirement. The truth is that for the large majority of our members the real value lies in a combination of all of those things and more. GCSANJ provides an array of benefits for our members that includes, but is not limited to, the following; The Greenerside, our website GCSANJ.org, six Golf/Education Meetings per year, Annual Maintenance Facility Tour, four to six Roundtable Education/Dinner meetings per year, Annual Fall Education Seminar at Crystal Springs Resort and Spa, Summer Social Event (2006 River Cruise), Registration of GCSAA service and education points for meeting attendance (to begin July 2006), and more. In addition GCSANJ sponsors several awards recognizing our peers who have distinguished themselves over the past year and over the tenure of their membership in GCSANJ. Coming soon will be a new editorial award for the best article contributed by a member, and don’t forget the GCSANJ Scholarship Awards for children and grandchildren of GCSANJ members. Those are just the obvious benefits our members receive. The less obvious yet equally valuable benefits include managing things like producing a Member Directory, contributing to scholarships and research at Rutgers, research at UMass, Tri State Turf Foundation, providing legislative support for initiatives that impact our industry, representing our members at meeting with allied associations, and more. In my opinion that’s a heck of a bargain! But wait, there is more to it than that. If members want to really maximize the value of belonging to GCSANJ, the best way to do that is to get involved at some level. Volunteer to serve on a committee, run for the Board of Directors, write an article for The Greenerside, volunteer to help at a GCSANJ event, offer up an idea or attend a meeting. Any of these maximize the value of your membership. And guess what, you can earn GCSAA points toward maintaining your Class A and CGCS status at the same time. Roger Stewart CGCS suggested it because it had worked very well back in the Mid- West so maybe it would work here. He was correct. It has been going on for three years and there is no end in sight. A major reason for its success is that it has given us the opportunity to visit courses that are new to many. The best part though is that it has allowed many members to meet people who had previously only been names in our directory. Our last tour was no exception. The middle stop on the schedule was Neshanic Valley GC. Very few members knew where it was or had even heard of it. This new design is part of the very fine Somerset County Park System and is a beauty with 27 holes open to the public. If you have been on the shop tour you know that we only travel to the maintenance facility. Here we discuss what is good about each site and what could have or still can be done to make improvements. Often we have many superintendents in attendance who are in the planning stages for their new buildings and seeing these existing facilities can help in making their plans. In this case it also appeared that this course would be a nice site for a monthly meeting (but I think that about every course that I visit). Our host for this stop on the tour is a wonderful young man who has been there since the beginning. His name is Darrell Marcinek and he was really pleased to introduce his staff and his facility to the group. As the tour was ending I casually asked Darrell if he would consider hosting a monthly meeting. He quickly said yes and I hoped we could do it in Continues on page 9 Pavelec Bros. When this year’s site for the May meeting had to change to October we had an issue and we had to act quickly. I stopped in to see Darrell and he immediately made some calls and we were on the calendar for May. It took time to get all of the final details worked out but it was never a problem for Darrell. He kept working and smiling and suddenly it was the day of the meeting. Darrell Marcinek receives a plaque and GCSANJ flag for hosting the June meeting at Neshanic Valley. As we started arriving it appeared that the weather was going to be an issue. It had rained and lots more was on its way but we kept expecting the best. Bruce Cadenelli, Kevin Driscoll, John Hyland and Phil O’Brien were there ready to sign people in and they got the chance to do their jobs. 68 people signed in but many thought that they were going to listen to Mark Kuhns CGCS speak and then we would have lunch and then go home. Part of that happened. Mark gave a wonderful GCSAA presentation and we had to stop the questions so we could enjoy the delicious lunch provided by Culinary Creations and sponsored by Floratine and Lebanon. During lunch the skies cleared and the sun came out. Darrell checked things out and we were going to play. Carts had to stay on the paths and it was still wet but it was very playable and in great shape. Four and a half hours later, without a drop of rain our round was completed and I still hadn’t hit even one semi good golf shot. It was so bad that I am actually thinking about asking Kevin Driscoll for some advice. Talk about desperation. Tom Ashfield on the other hand may not have hit even one semi-bad golf shot. Tom was Darrell’s boss and mentor at Canoe Brook CC so he really wanted to share the day with Darrell. His 72 was the best gross score by 5 shots but since he missed 3 birdies under 6 feet it could have been even better. He did have 5 birdies so he came close to making birdies on half of the holes. Not bad for a superintendent with 36 holes to care for. Brian Lescrinier’s fine 77 took the second and final spot in the gross competition. Both of these gentlemen would have also won net prizes but we have decided to share the wealth and only give one prize per person for these contests. Our net winners were Harry Harsin (65), Dave McGhee (68), Wendell Beakley (68) and Darrell Marcinek (69). Bayer ES, Philadelphia Turf, Storr Tractor and Vic Gerard sponsored the closest to the pin contests. The winners were Mark Miedler (6ft l0ins),Lance Rogers (5ft 10ins) and Tom Ashfield twice at 10ft 5ins and 2ft l0ins. Harry Harsin, Jim McNally, John Carpinelli and Scott Bills walked away with the long drive prizes donated by Atlantic Irrigation, Philadelphia Turf, Storr Tractor and Wilfred MacDonald. Tom Ashfield led all skins winners with 3 and Kelly Barry, Jim Cross and Phil O’Brien had one each. The only sort of down note was that Bob Ujobagy has decided to retire from the Somerset County Park Systems after 42 years on the job. He has been a good friend to all of us and a GCSANJ member the entire 42 years. It is sad to see him go but hopefully he will now find more time to join us at meetings. The good news in this though is that Darrell will now move up and assume Bob’s responsibilities. Taking over for Darrell at Neshanic is Ed Highland. He and Jesse Sholl are two great young men who worked very hard with Darrell and their dedicated staff in preparing the course for our event. Things will continue to get better and better under their leadership. It was a wonderful day and our sincere thanks go to ev eryone within the county and at Neshanic Valley for allowing us to enjoy your little piece of paradise. We hope to see you again somewhere in the not too distant future. Newly appointed superintendent Ed Highland of Neshanic Valley and his assistant Jesse Sholl (L to R). It sounded like it would take a long time but it also sounded great to me. I had played it once before and I remember struggling even though it was a short course. I hoped to prove that it was just a bad day. Last year Mike told Bruce Peeples CGCS that he would be ready this year so we spoke and picked a month. June was his first choice as long as it wasn’t The Invitational Tournament. With the Invitational on a hiatus that was not an issue. When this year’s schedule was starting to firm up we picked a date and our June site became a destination. In addition to providing the meeting location, Mike also thought that we should consider Ron Forse and Jim Nagel to be our speakers. They were the team of architects that had done the restoration and should be perfect for the educational part of our meeting. It turned out to be a great choice as they brought Willie Park Jr. to life with detailed explanations of his design concepts and why they are still relevant today. On the course we got to see and understand why the changes were made and why a 114 year old course can still be a stem challenge to the modem players with their high tech clubs and balls. During our round it was also easy to see why Mike and Tony Gordon make such a good team. The condition of the course was wonderful and it definitely highlighted their skills and all of the efforts from everyone Dennis DeSanctis, Sr, Cell: 610-608-3181 Office: 610-327-3390 Fax: 610-327-0581 ddesanctis@aer-core.com 1486 S. Our golfing skills are good (in some cases) but the course was slightly better. We played a course just under 6,000 yards and Dr. Jim Baird from the USGA was the only player who was able to break 80 (did I say the course was only slightly better?). He was the first person to let me know that he was attending this meeting and that was before the notice went out. Glen Ridge CC is one of his favorites and he didn’t want to miss the opportunity to play the restored course. He got the chance to be paired with Dean Paolucci. Dean is the president of Glen Ridge CC and he is one of the main reasons this restoration took place and also why we were able to have our meeting there (thanks again Dean). This combination plus the fact that he is a wonderful golfer (even though he plays very little) allowed Jim to shoot a 77. Tom Grimac who usually loses on a match of cards took second place over Brad Fox. Both shot 80 but unfortunately we only reward first and second on the gross side. In the net tournament Harry Harsin (67) took first place from Mark Berdine (67) on another match of cards. Matt Dobbie (68) and Fran Owsik completed the net winners. Paul Brandon (2ft 9ins), Andy Bucceri (4ft 6ins), Lee Kozsey (6ft 9ins), Eric Hanisko (11 ft 9ins) and Frank Tichenor were closest to the pin winners. These prizes were donated by DryJect, Philadelphia Turf, Storr Tractor, Syngenta and Vic Gerard. In addition to the normal prize, Frank won special gifts from Syngenta and his name has been put into a separate drawing for a chance at greater rewards. Doug Spencer from Continues on page 13 GCSANJ news Glen Ridge Continued from page 12 Vic Gerard tried to give away the use of one of their vehicles for a month but no superintendent was a winner. The long drive sponsors were Atlantic Irrigation, Philadelphia Turf, Storr Tractor, W.A. Cleary and Wilfred MacDonald. Our big hitters were Mark Berdine, Paul Brandon, Matt Dobbie, Josh Kopera and Lance Rogers. Jeff Drake experimented with his new rescue club on his third shot in the rough around the green on the 6th hole. He knocked it in on this par 5 and he had an eagle. He was also in the skins game so he walked away with 2 skins for this shot. With one skin each were Paul Brandon, Andy Bucceri, Chris Carson, Steve Finamore, Eric Hanisko, Harry Harsin, Dick LaFlamme, Jay McKenna, Frank Tichenor and Dennis Shea. We had a superb time on a marvelous course and this experience was matched by the food. Mike had a couple SynaTek Guest speaker architect Ron Forse talks about the renovations at the Glen Ridge Country Club. options and he chose the best that the club had to offer and it showed. He knew that once again Philadelphia Turf and Lebanon were sponsoring part of the food costs and there should be no reason why we would wait another 114 years to come back.
