Stachowski, Golf Club of Concordia It is only the middle of May and we’re already having 90 degree days with higher than normal winds, low humidity, high skies and dry conditions. I can only hope that this is not a precursor to the summer that has yet to arrive. I am always amazed at how the weather affects our daily lives. I would like to welcome Cece Peabody as our new Executive Director. She was chosen from over thirty candidates that applied for the position. I feel strongly that we made the right decision for the present and future of our Association. Below is a brief bio about Cece: Cece Peabody is the owner of The Peabody Group, an association management company based in Wayne NJ. The Peabody Group has worked with various associations and foundations in New Jersey over the past fifteen years. Cece earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Montclair State University, taught high school English, and as part of her commitment to excellence in the meetings industry, Cece earned her CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) certification in 2005. She is also currently working toward earning a CAE (Certified Association Executive). Organizational and project management skills along with a love for exceeding the goals of an association are the backbone of Cece’s success with groups she has been involved with. The transition between MET, our present management, and Cece will be phased-in gradually, with a full transition in the middle of July. This will give Cece the opportunity to move into her position effectively and efficiently. I know we will encounter some bumps in the road during the transition period so please be patient. The Committee covered all the bases in making their final recommendation of qualified candidates to the Board. Association News: The 2nd Annual Summer Social/River Cruise is slated for July 7, 2007. Last year’s cruise was fun for all that attended, so save the date - come out and mingle with your peers. Hopefully the turf discussions will remain on the dock!!! This year the Robert Trent Jones Invitational at Metedeconk National will be held on October 29, 2007. The GCSANJ Foundation is running this event and we are looking for more participation from our members. The proceeds from this event benefit both the GSCANJ Foundation and the Environmental Institute for Golf. Lastly, Wally Waltsak, a twenty-plus year member of the GSCANJ recently encountered a spell of bad luck. MS: I was bom in Elmira, NY and attended Elmira Free Academy. After high school I moved to New Jersey and started to work in residential construction. I worked my way through the ranks and was promoted to Construction Superintendent. I was responsible for getting new projects started which included site infrastructure and new home site infrastructure and exterior work. With the slow down of the residential construction in the late 80’s I took a position as the Construction Superintendent of the already started Shore Oaks Golf Club now Eagle Oaks Golf Club. From there I went on to become the Superintendent at Pinecrest Golf Club. During my time at Pincrest I attended the Rutgers Turf Management Program then moved on to become the Assistant Superintendent and later the Superintendent for the Forest Course at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club. Presently I’m the golf course Superintendent at the Golf Course of Concordia. GN: When did you first think about getting into the golf course business and were there any influencing factors and/or persons? MS: During my time at Shore Oaks I was more interested in the construction phase of the golf business. I was looking to stay in that line of work but working closely with Bob Miller the Superintendent at the time peaked my interest in the maintenance side of the business. GN: What has been your experience before going to the Golf Club of Concordia? MS: Construction has always been a big influence on my career but for the past 14 years it has been golf course maintenance. GN: How long have you been on the GCSANJ Board of Directors? MS: I have served on the GCSANJ Board of Directors for the past eight years going into my ninth. GN: What positions have you held on the GCSANJ Board and what committees have you served on that were most important to you? MS: During my time on the Board I have served as a Director, Secretary, Vice President, and currently President. I have served on the Government Relations, Awards, Finance, Club Relations, and Executive Director Search Committees. My time on the Government Relations Committee has been the most fun. I feel that we have been able raise the awareness of our Association with the policy makers in Trenton and with NJDEP. GN: Why did you volunteer for the GCSANJ Board? MS: To give back to the Association. GN: Mickey, we all know that serving on the GCSANJ Board takes time away from your family. Please tell a little bit about your family. MS: In May of this year my wife Leslie and I will celebrate our 18th anniversary with our two children Chandler eight and Connor three. My family, together with work, keeps me very busy with activities and functions. GN: Are there any achievements or awards that you have accomplished during your career? MS: I have received the GCSANJ Member of the Year Award, The NJTA Environmental Stewardship Award, and GCSAA Excellence in Government Relations Award. GN: Before we change gears, is there anything else you would like to say? MS: Not really I think I’ve covered all the bases. GN: Mickey, what is your favorite time of year? MS: Spring is always great. I enjoy getting back into the swing of things. GN: Favorite singer/band? MS: I like most of the music today but I listen to more talk radio these days. GN: Favorite food? MS: Look at me I don’t miss many meals. GN: Last, but not least... could you please tell us your handicap? MS: The game itself is enough of a handicap for me. I say 18 but I need to work a lot more to get there. GN: Thank you, Mickey. 2007 CALENDAR June 5-7 106th Amateur Championship, Rockaway River C.C. - go to www.njsga.orgJune 18 PAGCS/GCSANJ Meeting- Trenton C.C. - joint meeting w/ the Philadelphia Association go to www.gcsanj.org or www.pagcs.org July 6 MGA/Metlife Public Links Championship, Neshanic Valley G.C.- go to www.mgagolf.org July 7 2nd Annual Summer Social, a River Cruise, sponsored by “The GCSANJ Foundation” go to www.gcsanj.org July 10-12 87th Open Championship, Plainfield C.C.- go to www.njsga.org July GCSANJ Roundtable Meeting- Date & Location TBA- go to www.gcsanj.org July 31 Rutgers Turfgrass Research, Golf & fine turf field day at Hort Farm II- go to www. turf.rutgers.edu August GCSANJ District Meetings- go to www.gcsanj.org Sent. 18-20 NJPGA Championship- Mountain Ridge C.C.- go to www.newjersey.pga.com 18th Copper Hill/Paul DesChamps Memorial Classic- Copper Hill C.C.- go to www.nagagolf.org for more info Sept. 24 September 25 The “new” GCSANJ Member/guest tournament- Hidden Creek Golf Club- check for updates on www.gcsanj.org October 1 Dr. Troll Fundraiser Tournament- The International Course, Bolton,MA October 15 The GCSANJ Championship- Arcola C.C.- go to www.gcsanj.org October 29 The 19th RTJ Invitational- Metedeconk National Golf Club- go to www.gcsanj.org Nov 13-15 4th Annual Crystal Conference, Golf @ Wild Turkey- go to www.gcsanj.org Dec 4-6 New Jersey Green Industry Expo, Taj Mahal, Atlantic City- go to www.njturfgrass.org AG Enterprises STAFF UNIFORMS STAFF SHIRTS / PANTS Fleece Lined Jackets / Sweat Shirts / T-Shirts / Shorts / Hats Visors / Rain Suits / Rubber Boots / Logo Ball Washer Towels Embroidered or Screened Logo Rick Gordon 201-488-1276 • Fax: 201-489-5830 Email: Merrick160@aol.com • www.agenterprisesonline.com 160 Overlook Avenue • Hackensack, NJ 07601 PARTAC TOP-DRESSINGS GOLF COURSE America's Premium HEAT TREATED Top-Dressings 800-247-2326 www.PARTAC.com Fax 908-637-8421 The Rutgers Turfgrass Classic makes research a winner once again If we were to use football terms, the Rutgers Turfgrass Classic would be considered “The Super Bowl” of turfgrass fundraisers. This one day event has grown from an idea to the very successful fundraiser that it is today. Through the years it has been held at several locations and not because the venues were lacking in any way but always in an attempt to raise more money for its use towards research. This year was the 12th edition and with the increase in the number of players over the years we once again had to use all three courses at Fiddler’s Elbow CC. With 312 golfers we set a record for attendance and everywhere you went you saw hole and tee signs recognizing the contributions made be companies from every part of the industry. The GCSANJ meets Donald Ross at Seaview During one of my sales calls last year I spent some onsider time at Seaview Resort & Spa with the three great superintendents who care for the 36 holes at this resort. All three were quite happy to c hosting a meeting in 2007. Mark Beaumont gets the final say and he thought that right after their LPGA tournament would be a good time to showcase the Bay Course. Shamus O’Connor is the superintendent on the Bay Course and Kevin Tansey has the same responsibility on the Pine Course and they both agreed with Mark and so we put June down on our meeting planning schedule. Not long after our discussions, the LPGA threw them an unexpected curve. Their date was given to a new tournament in spite of a verbal agreement and the long and very successful tournament and fundraising history of this event. With this change came a review of the decisions that we had made. We could now open the season with no potential for overly aggressive insects in April. Taking advantage of this opportunity we met with Linda Simpkins and things rapidly fell in place. With Linda’s skills it is no wonder Brad has been so successful as they Bill Murray presents the GCSANJ flag to Seaview superintendent Mark Beaumont for hosting the April monthly meeting. teamed up for all of his sales efforts. Their efforts would make any sales manager proud. Behind the scenes a friendly competition has emerged between them. Each year for the past 4 years a steak dinner rests on the outcome of who raises the greatest amount of research dollars for this event. I am not sure how it started but I believe that Dr. Meyer is undefeated. These results could change next year but I have watched how hard it is to say no to Bill. Bruce is confident about next year but no matter what happens; if necessary he does have that endowed chair to fall back on. The weather for the day was beautiful and with some new registration changes made by our outgoing executive director Michelle Rickard, people never had to get out of their cars until they were walking to the clubhouse for golf and food. In attendance was the new executive director for the NJTA and the GCSANJ. Cece Peabody will replace Michelle and she is extremely qualified to lead both organizations and I know she was happy to see how well the day went. Dave McGhee has been directly involved with the NJTA and the GCSANJ. His passion for our industry and his position as General Manager at Fiddler’s Elbow have allowed him to be an integral part of our success. Tom Breiner heads up this team of quality superintendents that care for the Forest, Meadow and River courses. Mark Loos, Gary Shupper and Bob Fellner are the other members of this team and whatever they are doing it is working well because things have never been better. Even with that, both the Meadow and the River started major renovations the day after our meeting. I can see they are not comfortable resting on their laurels. There were too many winners to include all of them in this article but The GCSANJ team of Mickey Stachowski, Bill Murray, Roger Stewart and Chris Boyle did come in third place on the Forest Course. They were edged out by teams from the USGA and BASF. On the Meadow Course the Plant Food team took second. Tom Weinert convinced Trent Inman to fly up from Florida to join Tom Ashfield and Greg Nicoll and they made a strong team. In addition to this Tom Ashfield had a win in the long drive contest. The Grass Roots team did not win but Paul Dotti played on this team and he won both long drives on the Forest Course. He is such a nice gentlemen that he wanted me to give one of the prizes to somebody else. He thought one win was enough. We also had Mickey, Tim Kerwin and Jeff Wetterling win a closest to the pin contest. Nothing will take away from the achievement and I have to do some research to see if Rick has to buy one or two rounds for making this albatross. The opportunity to ask questions and then get answers inspired lots of great dialogue. It was like a very active roundtable meeting and everyone walked out of it better informed then when they entered the room. A superb lunch buffet followed and was enjoyed by all except Jim Baird. He had to leave. Work keeps getting in the way of him making these events a complete day. He had really wanted to play the course but that will have to wait. After lunch we left the clubhouse and were greeted by much improved weather. The rain had stopped and although the day never got warm it also never got windy so it turned out to be a great day to play. Rich Mattone had two hold up and Ken Mathis had three winners. Nice going fellows. When we sent out the meeting notice there was not going to be anything after golf. We wanted to keep costs down and this was the easiest way to achieve that goal. Two days before the event Brad Simpkins was able to convince the wonderful people at Plant Food to sponsor an after-golf reception. This turned out to be a real success. Normally people return home quickly after meetings especially since many have a long journey in front of them. This time it seems that most of the field stayed to enjoy Brad’s hospitality and the opportunity to be with friends. It was a great way to finish a terrific day. There are many thanks to go around. Mark, Shamus, Kevin and their staff really did a marvelous job getting the course in tournament conditions. Hosting your peers can be very stressful but they had such a great time with the meeting that Mark kept inviting us back. We will be honored to do so when our schedules work out. The other people that we dealt with at Seaview do the same quality job every day but their normal efforts made us feel special so Linda please tell everyone how much we enjoyed their professionalism. In closing I want to extend all of our best wishes to Shamus. He has taken another superintendent position on Long Island so he won’t be at Seaview when we return but he will be missed (unless Mark invites him back for the day). We will remember that he chose to spend his last day at Seaview hosting us and I hope our paths will cross again. Service and Support. Technical Service The ideal fertility program for golf course putting greens would provide small, but constant, quantities of nutrients throughout the growing season. Unlike a home lawn where turf color may be most important, the objective of a fertility program for a putting green must be based upon growth. Ideally, growth is relatively even throughout the season. To maintain a smooth putting surface, the turf must grow enough to heal from the wear and tear of play as well as the wear from mowing on a daily basis, too much growth, however, slows down the putting speed of the green and may elicit criticism from the better golfers. Also, excessive growth will promote thatch SynaTek The Turf Solutions People accumulation, and may contribute to increased disease and insect problems. On the other hand greens that are under fertilized are more prone to anthracnose and can “thin out”. Fertility response and growth are routinely measured by counting the number of buckets of clippings removed from each green every day. The perfect slow release fertilizer has not been developed yet. Perfect is defined as a fertilizer that will turn on and off as needed to compensate for changing weather conditions. Supplement to the use of granular greens grade fertilizer, applications of soluble or liquid, quickly available nutrients at low rates on a frequent basis will provide similar consistent feeding. Today a superintendent has many products available that can fill the need. Some of the most common products have equal amounts of nitrogen and potassium and lower phosphorous levels. A soil test or tissue test is always a good idea and can insure that you are providing the correct nutrients for your situation. Another common practice today is adding plant bio stimulants and humic acid products to the tank when spoon feeding greens. Rates of quickly available fertilizers that are typical for this purpose are generally in the range of 0.1 to 025 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per application (1/2 pound of 23-0-23 soluble/1,000 sq ft. fertilizer will deliver 0.115 pounds of nitrogen and 0.115 pounds of potassium.) The volume of water used in the application is critical. Higher volumes of water are preferred to prevent burn. As the fertilizer rate increases, the volume of water applied per 1,000 sq ft each green every day, should increase as well. Sufficient water is needed to prevent turf injury and dissolve or suspend the fertilizer (and other materials such as fungicides which are commonly applied in spoon—feeding programs). Bypass agitation is sufficient for the dry soluble and clear liquid fertilizers. The best method of application is a boom sprayer which will give an even application. The foliar absorption of nutrients is limited in comparison to root absorption. The prudent golf course superintendent will follow the liquid fertilization with a light watering of tile area to reduce burn potential and hasten response. Response should he seen in several days. The varieties Penncross/Pennlinks II did not perform well in the turf quality rankings and may be the least desirable varieties for seeding putting greens at this time. 2. Penn A-l is no longer the highest rated bentgrass variety. Many new creeping bentgrass varieties have tested to be equal or better for overall turf quality compared to the Penn A’s and G’s. 3. Many new creeping bentgrass varieties are now performing well for overall putting green turf quality ratings (mean, twenty two university sites). Currently, the highest rated new bentgrass varieties include: Authority, CY-2, Declaration, 007, Mackenzie, Shark, Tyee, Cobra II (IS-AP9), Memorial, and T-l. 4. We know genetic diversity (in a variety) provides greater stability and lessens the chance of a catastrophic disease epidemic. Some creeping bentgrass varieties with the least genetic diversity include the A’s and G’s. Blending seed of the A’s and G’s does not accomplish adding genetic diversity to a creeping bentgrass putting green. The greatest varietal genetic diversity is with varieties such as 007, Tyee, Mackenzie, Authority, Declaration, Shark, Benchmark DSR, and Memorial. 5. NOT all new varieties have the same disease resistance (e.g., Independence, Shark, Bengal, Alpha, T-l and Tyee are all more susceptible to dollar spot than most other bentgrass varieties). 6. When selecting varieties for leaf color keep in mind that “mottling” may occur after seeding a blend consisting of two or more varieties. For example, the variety T-l has a darker green color that will segregate when blended with lighter colored varieties. Select varieties for blending that have been reported to have a similar leaf color. 7. Select varieties for use with compatible leaf texture (i.e., fine textured = Authority, 007, Tyee, A-l or Mackenzie or coarse textured = Penncross, Pennlinks, Memorial, LS-44 and Alpha). 8. When selecting varieties for turf density match compatible qualities (i.e., most density = Mackenzie, Tyee, Shark, Authority, Independence, Benchmark DSR, 007, T-l and Cy-2 or least density = Penncross and Pennlinks). 9. Some varieties are more prone to “bentgrass bloat” which may occur in June after high humidity/rainfall causes the thatch / crowns to elevate with subsequent mower scalping. Although possible with any creeping bentgrass, this phenomenon has been observed to do significant damage to the variety Declaration if not maintained properly. 10. Summary conclusions include: The A and G varieties are no longer the highest rated for overall turfgrass quality. Best recommendations at this time for low cut / high-density putting greens include Tyee, Mackenzie, 007, Shark, or Authority. For all-purpose putting greens, select the varieties 007, Mackenzie, Independence, T-l, or Cy-2 (Not recommended to blend T-l with lighter leaf colored varieties to avoid color “mottling.”). Pennlinks II and Penncross are not the best varieties for seeding putting greens. Richard Hurley s life experience includes working as a golf course superintendent, participating in turfgrass management education and research at Rutgers University, preparing golf courses for tournaments, playing golf around the world, being a student of golf history, associating with various golf course architects, and becoming involved with dozens of golf course construction projects. Are you work ing 7 days a week and looking for a break? We have the solution! Last year the social committee got together and asked...” what can we do in the middle of the summer to break up the everyday pressures that GC Superintendents go through and spend it with friends and family”? We came up with the idea of a river cruise. We believed we could have this event, bring members and friends together and possibly raise some money for the GCSANJ Foundation. “It WORKED”! We raised $4,100 for “The Foundation”. Did I forget to tell you that the inaugural cruise was a complete sellout. The River Queen will set sail out of Brielle, NJ and holds 140 crew members. We anticipate the same success with the 2nd Annual River Cruise and we don’t want you to miss out on the fun. Don’t forget to bring your friends. This year’s event will provide relief from the everyday pressures of our business and will also provide relief for Dave Pease. The GCSANJ Foundation will earmark all funds from the River Cruise to the Dave Pease medical relief fund. Dave’s medical expenses were unusually high. Dave chose Columbia Presbyterian and the doctor there because, in his eyes, were the best for his scenario. Dave is doing well and we are all glad he took this option. A person’s health is priceless! Don’t forget to sign up...Now! Go to gcsanj.org for info and signup sheet. We promise you this...you will have the time of your life and for 3 hours on this Saturday night, you’ll be stress free.
