Dear Invited Guests, It is my pleasure, on behalf of Ryan Oliver and the members of Metedeconk National Golf Club, to invite you to the 2009 Robert Trent Jones Invitational. I am very proud to have been associated with this event for many years along with my brother Bruce and am thrilled to participate in this year's event. This event would never have come to be if it were not for the vision of Richard Sambol, founder of Metedeconk, and his son Herb who recognized the genius of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and the interpretation of that genius by Roger Rulewich. Their decision to recognize the significant impact by the Golf Course Superintendent in developing the vision of the course architect resulted in this superb event. This event has also raised several hundred thousand dollars for turf research and scholarships. Although it has been more than twenty years since the construction of Metedeconk, the memories of driving the course with Mr. Jones and the collaboration with Roger are still quite vivid. Memories of Mr. Jones and Mr. Sambol riding together are also quite clear as frankly how often does one get to work so closely with two legends in their respective fields of endeavor. Please consider joining old friends in participating in this year's event at this magnificent golf course to continue the tradition of the visions of Messrs. Jones and Sambol. I have no doubt that you and your guests will enjoy a great day of golf and camaraderie. Thank you for your consideration and past support of this event. This is the time I get to collect all my thoughts and reflect on what has happened during the day and what I would like to accomplish the next day. On one of my recent walks, I began to think about the time I started out in this crazy business and the people who have mentored me. My father taught me through my early years how to be a man but once I entered the turfgrass management field, it was a man named Bob Phipps at Shorehaven Golf Club. This man taught me all he knew about our industry but also that there was life after work. Mentoring is one of the great qualities this state’s superintendents have always done and hopefully continue to do in the future. Moving through the years there are so many superintendents who have contributed to our association by sending young assistants to be superintendents elsewhere. People like Joe Flaherty CGCS and Bob Dickison CGCS who have been members long before I arrived in New Jersey and have been followed by a newer breed of superintendent the likes of Steve Finamore CGCS, Rick Christian and Mark Kuhns, CGCS also taking their assistants down the path to success. Between all of these men they have taught numerous superintendents (too many to mention) how to be the best they can be in this industry and teach their assistants what they should and should not know. Hopefully this tradition continues and we have all our younger superintendents mentoring their assistants and show them how much dedication and sacrifice it takes to be a great golf course superintendent. William Murray, Shark River Golf Club If for any reason you feel you are being slighted, please contact your district director or myself and we will resolve any issues that are troubling you. The golf committee has been really busy this year due to some of our member’s inquiries. They will be holding a long drive contest followed by a round table meeting in late October at Bamm Hollow Country Club; this will be open to all members who think they can knock the cover off the ball. This will be the first year with many to follow for this new event, with bragging rites and some education thrown in, this should be a great day so please keep this date open. Also on tap this fall is our annual RTJ tournament run by the GCSANJ Foundation. This day raises money for Turfgrass research, which benefits all of us in the golfing profession. Your Clubs participation would be greatly appreciated. Once again Crystal Springs Conference is on the horizon. This year’s event has been shortened from its previous format. Watch for your brochure in the mail and if you have any questions fell free to contact Cece. Thank you for putting up with my long-winded writings. I hope to see you all in the fall. Bill Murray “Mentoring is one of the great qualities this state’s superintendents have always done...” As you all know by now we will be holding our September meeting at Pine Valley. This meeting will be one of the most sought after meetings to attend in the past five or six years. Attendance at all our meetings has slowly fallen off, the golf committee will ask all applicants for this meeting to show in a questionnaire what their participation the last few years has been. I believe this questionnaire will show yourselves and us how much participation you do for YOUR association. Some I know have to pay for meetings yourself, I feel your pain, but there are other avenues you can choose to get active in the association like join committees, write articles for the Greenerside or even run for a Board position. Cece Peabody, MAT, CMP Executive Director We are family I got all my ‘supers’ with me We are family Get up ev’rybody and sing Ev’ryone can see we’re together As we walk on by and we fly just like birds of a feather I won’t tell no lie all of the people around us they say Can they be that close Just let me state for the record We’re giving love in a family dose Sister Sledge wrote the song, “We are Family” in 1979...I took literary license and changed the word sisters in line 2 and replaced it with ‘supers’ as it is more fitting. The song has remained popular even today and it’s easy to see why. The music is upbeat and the lyrics offer a hopeful message. This industry and our association may not be any more unique than any other industry or association. But I have been witness to something so often it should be mentioned. When a member hears something good or bad about another member, the visible chain link sets in motion....one member tells another who tells another who tells another...sometimes there is an eblast, or a verbal announcement at an event...but action is always taken. And that’s the beautiful thing about our members....they always care, and they always share. If there is some way to step up and help, they do. If moral support is the only way to help, they do that. As the song says, ‘Ev’ryone can see we’re together’, and we are. If you choose to share, we will care and we will help — just as you could expect from your real family. GREAT JOB ED! It is an historical fact that there will be some sort of rain or weather issue around this meeting. This year it seems like it has rained every day but things were actually getting a little dry for some parts of the state. A little rain before the event would have been great. The weather forecast earlier in the week showed no rain for 4 straight days so this year was going to be different or so it appeared. On Wednesday, Ed McSeaman left a message on my answering machine looking for our final numbers but then he started talking about the rain and why did it always have to rain around his event. I got the message a few moments later and I looked out my window. There were about 10 drops coming down so Ed must have been pulling my leg. My next call was to Bill Murray to discuss the events of the day for the meeting and he told me that he had gotten about 2 inches in less then 2 hours. Now I was concerned. How bad was it going to be when we got there? Would we be able to play? What I saw when I got to club the next day was something close to a miracle. It was cloudy but you could tell that they hadn't gotten dumped on. With a smile Ed said that courses north and south of them had gotten hammered but Toms River had only gotten some sprinkles. It was enough to make preparations more difficult then usual but not enough to cause our golfers any problems at all. During the day, while we were playing the front nine, it looked like it could rain at any time but we got lucky and it cleared up nicely. For once “The Luck Of The Irish” wasn't bad luck. Nancy McSeaman once again had taken a day off from her job at the hospital to help with preparations for the tournament. Here is a person who spends her days saving lives and caring for patients. This day she had finished filling divots and was getting the tent set-up for registration. When we got there she greeted us with a smile. She just wanted to be sure that everything was perfect for Ed and for us before she headed home. It was Ed's day and she didn't want to be in the spotlight. Love is an amazing thing.... We had 53 golfers go through registration. With the usual help from Kevin Driscoll and Ken Mathis, things went smoothly. When they needed a break (Kevin's cell phone kept ringing) Tim Kerwin, Phil O'Brien and Cece Peabody were there to help out. This was Cece's first District lll Meeting and I think she enjoyed herself. She even got a chance to play when Fran Owsik wasn't able to get away from the course. Tim Kerwin was going to once again become a “pirate” if Kerry Boyer had been able to get there. Kerry and Dave Pease weren't there so he chose another role. He joined Ed McSeaman and they became “Hydration Men”. They traveled the course on a steady basis and were so good at their jobs Pat O'Neill gave Tim a big tip. Some things never change and I am glad that they don't. One man who needed hydration was our president, Mr. Bill Murray. Bill walked the course carrying his bag of clubs while the rest of us rode. In his tiny ancient bag he had his old set of 1951 MT irons. (one of the best clubs ever made). He also was hitting persimmon woods. In addition to that he wore long pants, long-sleeved dress shirt with a tie, a sweater-vest and an Irish cap. This would have been great on a cool November day but it was a hot and humid August day in NJ. He would have lost 10 pounds if the “Hydration Men” hadn't been there many times to help him complete his round. His 89 didn't win him any prizes but I know he had a great time and he looked “marvelous”. The top prizes of the day should have gone to Ed, his staff and the course itself. The course was perfect. It could not have gotten any better. Ed and his 4 man crew really put in a strong effort for conditions to be this good and somebody must really know how to maintain a golf course (any idea who that might be Ed....?) Thanks for making such an effort for us. As I mentioned above the course was great. It was the star of the day. It is only 6,136 yards long and everyone gets to putt to the same hole location two different times during the day. It sounds like a recipe for low scoring but it almost never turns out that way. Low gross was won by Jason Walker. He has a 2 handicap and he shot 78. Jay Antonelli is a 3 and he shot an 80. Pat Dolan shot 82 and he is a 5. Good scores no doubt but the winner once again is the course. Our low net winners were Kevin Driscoll (72 ... wouldn't have believed it either if I hadn't witnessed it), Coby Mattison (73) and Jeff Wetterling (73). Coby and Jeff won on a match of cards over Peter VanDrumpt, Jeremy Hreben, Jim Cadott A Great Meeting Keeps Getting Better ...continued from page 8 and Glenn Miller who all shot 73. All of these prizes were donated by Lee Kozsey from Syngenta. He also donated a closest to the pin. Joining him as sponsors were Chris Borek from Black Lagoon Pond Management, He sponsored 2 contests and Dennis DeSanctis Sr from Aer-Core Inc was our final sponsor of the day. The winners of the closet to the pin contests were Rick Krok ( 25 ft 10 ins), Mark Peterson (6 ft 5 ins), Chris Hasbrouck ( 5 ft 8 ins) and Mike Hocko (3 ft 5 ins). The club donated two long drive prizes and they were won by Matt Dobbie (what a bomb he hit !!!) and Harry Harsin. In addition to this we had a qualifier for the long drive contest we will hold at our Championship (sponsored by Tree Tech). Everyone donated $10 and that goes into the foundation and will be used for charity. There were no prizes for the winners. It was for “Bragging Rights” only. Every donor however did receive a hat donated by Dupont. The winners in the 0-12 group were Matt Dobbie and Rich Mattone. Pat O'Neill and Jeff Wetterling led the 13-24 group while the 25-40 winners were Bob Dickison and Jim McNally. The skins winners with one each were Jay Antonelli, Matt Dobbie, Chris Hasbrouck, Mike Hocko, Rich Mattone, Ken Miller, Mark Peterson, Tom Wolgast and Jeff Wetterling. Jeff also won the use of Vic Gerard's new utility vehicle. His number was picked and he gets this to use for a month. It was also nice to point out a group that has played in this event for many years. They are all legends and have done much for our association. These fellows are Skip Cameron, Bob Dickison, Jim Pelrine and Jim McNally, I over-looked Charlie Dey when I made this announcement. Sorry Charlie. I wanted to point these fellows out to the new members of our association and I wanted them to say hello. There is a lot of wisdom in all of our long-time members and it would be good for the young people to try and learn from the masters. I will close now and thank Ed and everyone at Toms River for allowing us to return each year. We hope to be invited back in 2010 and if you allow us to return we will try and do something about the weather. Note: We also heard from Ed McSeaman when he accepted his plaque and flag. He was pleased to be our host once again and he thanked all of us for being there. Once all of this was completed he reminded us that we need to take care of ourselves. Make the time to get tests especially a PSA and a colonoscopy. He had taken his own advice (Nancy did have something to do with this) and he discovered that there was an issue. If it hadn't been diagnosed he might not have been hosting this or any other meeting. It is very important advice and even if you weren't at the meeting he was still speaking to you... This very important reminder followed a day where our president (he asked me not to mention his name so I won't) had gone out and made ribbons for every person at the meeting to wear. They were white and teal and they are reminders of ovarian and cervical cancer. One of our members's wife has been told she has to deal with this problem and our president wanted to show solidarity in their fight. We can't do much for them other than pray, but we can bring attention to this issue. It actually gave one of our younger members a chance to mention that his 34 year old wife was dealing with breast cancer. These are all terrible diseases but they can be cured if caught in time. Looking around the room that night I knew of several people who have or are dealing with similar issues. I am sure there were some that I didn't know about. It can and will happen to anyone. Control your future as much as you can by doing what you know everyone else should do. Take the time to listen to Ed's advice and if you would like to share any issues with us please know that we won't spread around any info unless you want us to do so. We can only do so much but we can be good friends and we can be their as a support group. We are family... Email: execdirector@gcsanj.org District IV Spring Meeting at Wildwood by Wendell Beakley Wild and windy at Wildwood This years District IV Spring Meeting was held at Wildwood Golf Course. The host superintendent Jeff Staeger was busy enough before agreeing to host this meeting. Jeff is not only a newly elected District IV Director but also studying to become a certified golf course superintendent through the GCSAA and working on a drainage and bulk head project at the course. But through all that Jeff had the course in great shape and the event was enjoyed by all that attended. The attendance included some of the GCSANJ board members such as the President Bill Murray, Secretary Lance Rogers and Chapter Delegate for the GCSAA Jim McNally. It was nice to have Board Members attend the event. The day started with a friendly face as there to greet and register everyone was the one and only Shaun Barry. Shaun was joined by the raffle twins, aka Kevin Driscoll and Phil O’Brien who were of course selling raffle tickets. After registration everyone moved to the Conference room to enjoy the speaker Tom Grimac, CGCS speak on the importance of communication between superintendents, general managers, pro and greens committees. After a wonderful lunch sponsored by Pocono Turf Supply Co/ Syngenta it was out to the golf course where the wind was howling with gusts up to 45 mph. As you know high wind and fast greens are a recipe for high scores. For example the low gross winner was 4.1 handicapper Tom Grimac, CGCS, with a score of 89. Other prize winners included, low net winner Bob Prickett with 81, Long Drive John Carpinelli, closest to the pins were won by Dave Mitchell on 5th at 21 feet 1 inch and Doug Larson on the 16th at 30 feet. With the windy conditions, birdies were few and far between. In fact there were only four birdies for the day by Mark Peterson on 1st, Bob Prickett on the 10th, Doug Larson on the 13th and Dave Mitchell on the 15th. The birdies of course held up for Skins. As always a meeting such as this is not possible without a confident superintendent with a good relationship with his general manger, pro and green committee etc. Thanks Jeff for all of your hard work - it clearly showed by the course condition and how successful the event was. Also with that in mind Jeff looks forward to hosting a state meeting in the future. Last but certainly not least, a note of thanks goes out to the sponsors that helped make this meeting possible. Murphy, Ph.D. Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Management Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station Introduction The last month of summer typically brings cooler weather and a steady increase in soil water reserves, which can ease irrigation demands and improve the vigor of golf course turfs. Unfortunate for some, these environmental conditions can also signal the return of very active earthworm casting. Earthworms can be found throughout world; however, few people realize that many species of earthworms were introduced in many places around the globe including North America. Some research studies have evaluated the activity of earthworms introduced into forest ecosystems for potentially harmful effects. Earthworms are typically active in the upper soil layer when the weather is cool and moist and some species will emerge from burrows to feed on surface organic matter. The organic matter and soil ingested by earthworms is mixed during digestion and then excreted as castings. Some earthworm species will cast within the soil and rarely present a problem on golf course turfs. However, other species cast on the surface. In some soils, earthworm castings make up as much as 50% of the soil aggregates. Earthworms will move deeper into the soil during dry periods but will emerge from the soil when burrows are flooded by rains. Species that cast on the soil surface can deposit up to 1/4 inch of enriched topsoil per year. The beneficial effects of castings include improved nutrient availability, soil aeration, and drainage, breakdown of thatch, and stimulation of microbial activity. The negative effects of castings on golf course turfs include dulling of mowers and the smothering grass, which decreases uniformity and playability of turf. Earthworm castings are also ideal seedbeds for the germination of weed seeds. Earthworms are also a food source for moles, skunks and other animals that dig while foraging for earthworms. Earthworm Species on Golf Courses Our survey of earthworm species on seven golf courses in New Jersey and New York collected 1,514 earthworms representing 8 species. Nearly one-half (48%) of the earthworms collected were the species, Lumbricus terrestris, also known as the night crawler. This species is well known for creating deep, vertical burrows. These burrows are typically covered by middens (casts). Other earthworm species capable of casting at the soil surface were found in our survey but none represented more than 15% of the total population surveyed. Thus, Lumbricus terrestris is very likely the major earthworm species causing castings problems on golf courses in the NJ/NY metropolitan area. Management Effects on Earthworm Casting We have conducted management trials on two golf courses in the metropolitan area (Knollwood Country Club and Meadow Brook Hunt Club). These trials evaluated the effect of several management practices on casting activity including fertilizer type, liming, acidification with sulfur, sand topdressing, and the combination of sulfur application and sand topdressing. At the initiation of trials, earthworm casting was very active at Knollwood Country Club (KCC); whereas, casting had been a problem but was currently limited at Meadow Brook Hunt Club (MBHC). We evaluated a number of fertilizers sources that included the general types of i) natural organic, ii) synthetic slowly available and iii) synthetic water soluble. Three fertilizer sources of each type were used in the trials. The fertilizer effect on casting appeared to be related to the initial level of casting at the trial site. At MBHC, where casting was initially very low, a fertilizer effect was not evident until the third season of the trial when organic fertilizers doubled the number of castings compared to either synthetic type of fertilizer. No consistent differences in casting among fertilizer types were found at KCC where casting was very active at the start of the trial. Thus, fertilizer type may be more important on sites were casting is not already high but there exists the potential for casting to increase (that is, earthworms are present but casting activity is low). In a year when at least one major university cancelled their traditional field day, Rutgers had near record attendance at both their Golf & Fine Turf day and also their Lawn, Landscape and Sports field day. The total for both days was 725 people. Several of these attendees were at both days but it still is an impressive number especially when you consider that these were the two hottest days of the summer up until that time. There were lots of things to be done back at the courses but everyone still chose to attend. The Golf Day had 347 people. They came from Canada and 17 states and many of them were superintendents and assistants. The Long Island superintendent association once again chartered a bus for 15 of their members to attend and there were 27 people from Canada. NJ had almost 200 people in attendance. PA had 51 people and NY had 35. It shows how broad an appeal this field day has within our industry. As usual they got to see what they were looking for and everyone had an opportunity to learn something at every stop. Congratulations to everyone involved with these days. Your hard work really showed. Thanks also to every association, company and person who donated money, product or time to help put this on. Murphy, Ph.D. Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Management Continued from page 12 Liming produced a very small increase in castings in the trial at MBHC but the increase was so small that it probably would not be detectable by a superintendent or golfer. Liming had no effect on casting at KCC where casting was already very active. Thus, stimulation of casting may be more likely with the use of organic fertilizer than liming. Not surprisingly, topdressing had no effect on casting at MBHC where casting activity was already very low. However, earthworm casting was reduced by as much as 50% after three seasons of topdressing at KCC where casting was very active. Applications of elemental sulfur produced the most rapid and dramatic effect of all treatments, reducing earthworm casting within the first season of application at both golf courses. Reduced casting from sulfur application was observed throughout all years of both trials and was as great as 97% compared to untreated plots. Unfortunately, the potential to scorch (or burn) turf is the major concern with applications of elemental sulfur (elemental sulfur is a strong acidifying soil amendment). As result, we initiated trials to identify the maximum rate of sulfur that can be applied without risk of scorching the turf. Although still preliminary, we have applied up to 3 pounds elemental sulfur (90% S) per 1000 square feet in a single application during spring or late summer without damaging fairway turf. It is important to mention that we have used either a dispersible micro granular or wettable powder formulation of elemental sulfur in our trials. We have purposely avoided using a product formulated as large sulfur granules, which will concentrate too much sulfur in one spot and very likely scorch (burn) the low-cut turf around those large granules. Scorch from excess elemental sulfur is slow to develop and takes a while to dissipate, so you want to avoid it. We have noted an interesting side effect observed in some of the sulfur trials; there was a population shift of the mixed-species fairway turf after elemental sulfur application. Creeping bentgrass population increased from 60% on non-sulfur plots to 77 and 83% on plots treated with elemental sulfur at 4.5 and 9.0 pounds per 1000 square feet, respectively, in the trial at KCC. In a trial conducted at Forest Hill Field Club, elemental sulfur applied at 9 pounds per 1000 square feet in March reduced the annual bluegrass population decreased from 51% to 20% by Accordingly, we are interested in speaking with superintendents that may have fairway sites suitable for further evaluations of elemental sulfur application. We are seeking trial areas of approximately 75- by 75-feet that would be reasonably uniform in soil type and exposure. A reasonably uniform distribution of turf species and/or moderate to intense earthworm casting would also be desirable for our studies. Please contact Jim Murphy at murphy@aesop.rutgers.edu or 732-921-1683 if you are interested in discussing an elemental sulfur trial at your golf course. From July 20-25, Trump National was the host of two national events. The USGA considered the quality of the two courses as well as all of their first class facilities before they submitted their request to the Trump organization. They liked the idea of having the boys and girls play the US Junior Amateur and the Girls Junior Amateur at one site. Their request was granted and the USGA has never had a better location for these events and at the same time history was made with this decision. I recently spoke to Tom Pepe about the tournament and his experience as a host. He is Director of Grounds for both courses and all of the grounds which are quite extensive. He immediately gave credit to Greg Eisner (Old) and Rob Wagner (New) and their assistants Nate Spence (Old) and Eric Kelley (New) for the wonderful conditions that the kids experienced and the members have on a daily basis. It was quite an undertaking. There were 312 players. Play alternated from course to course. If the boys played the Old then the next day they played the New. Each course required special attention according to the group playing that day. As the tournament moved to match play and the field got smaller the play then moved to the New Course. It was here where the final matches were played and Mr Trump surprised everyone and helicoptered in to be a spectator. The quality of play was amazing and I would think even he was impressed. As Tom said these kids played like men and women and not boys and girls. Tom also wanted to discuss a donation he will make to the GCSANJ Foundation. In addition to his usual crew he had 41 volunteers show-up and join his greens staff. To support them there were several affiliates who donated some “hard to come by funds” because they knew it would help Tom. From those donations Trump National is writing a check for $2,300. Tom does say that even though they are writing the check the money is on the behalf of all of the following companies. They are not listed in any special order. In 2009 alone Tom & Dave have allowed Forsgate to be a host for 5 different Bob Leslie Cup and Terry Stanley Cup matches. Tom Saunders Fran & Joe Owsik played Jeremy Hreben & Joe Elias. Bill Murray & Wendell Beakley played Paul Brandon & Ken Mathis. Rick Krok & John Farkas played Paul Brandon & Tom Tucci. Stephen Kay & Clark Weld played Shaun Barry & Dave Pease. Jim Cross & Dennis DeSanctis Sr. were scheduled to play Eric Carlson & Rich Fodor but bad weather interfered. This has been going on for years. The 2007 & 2008 Bob Leslie Cup finals were played here along with many other matches. I think Paul Brandon has played here about 5 times in the last 6 years. Every guest has been treated like a member and Tom & Dave feel like it is an honor to be hosts for such great tournaments. Tom, please say thanks to Dave and to Forsgate. Speeding Up Play In an effort to speed up play on the golf course and, therefore, produce a round of golf that is more fun to play, Willet has come up with some rather innovative ideas. The three different flag colors being used for the last couple of years do not go far enough. The colors now only indicate whether the pin position is in the front, middle, or back of the green. Willet suggests you also put a large L, C, or R on the flag so you will know whether the pin is located on the left, center, or right of the green. Once you do get to the green, there will now be one of the three different colored flag poles. This would be according to the stimp meter reading of the speed of the green for that day. If the green is slow, the pole would be red; if they’re fast, it would be green; and they’re right in the middle, the flag pole would be yellow. Play can be speeded up by reducing the time spent trying to decide what club to use. The number of golf clubs allowed would be reduced from 14 to three. You get to have a wood, an iron, and a putter. The golfers will only be allowed to have between three and six golf balls when playing a round of golf, depending on the difficulty of the golf course. Once a player has lost the allotted number of golf balls, the round will be considered over. The next thing to be implemented will be borrowed from football. It seems that the golfer wants to know at all times how far he or she is away from the center of the green. We now have yardage markers in various forms on and around the fairways. The need for this will no longer be necessary. Willet Wilt recommends that all fairways be marked just like the football field - markings will be placed down the center of the fairway in ten yard increments with each yard marked out in between. In this way, the golfers will know exactly how far they are from the center of the green at all times. Now we will borrow from the NBA 24-second shot clock. The golfers will have 24 seconds to complete all the necessary putts in order to get the ball into the cup. If the shot clock (soon to be called the “putt clock”) will go off, and he or she will be penalized one stroke. Great Ideas to help your game! Willet is now seeking courses to volunteer to initiate these innovative methods of shortening the time it takes to play a round of golf. All interested parties should call Willet Wilt’s agent, Ken Kubik, ASAP. Editor's Note: This column was written by Ken Kubik of Grass Roots, and published in the Greenerside Spring 1992, along with USGA Journal, and other GC Association newsletters across the nation over the course of 13 years. We are delighted to share this wisdom with you. 2009 GCSANJ Scholarship Winners! Congratulations you did it! Congratulations to all of the students who sent in applications for our scholarships. We had 17 applications and we were not able to give a scholarship to all of the applicants. The scholarship committee graded them according to a set formula and rankings were established. The Foundation gave 11 scholarships totaling $10,000. That is the highest amount in our history. Even with 11 scholarships, we had to disappoint several very talented students and that is not an easy thing to do. We hope those that won will celebrate their hard work, and those that were not successful this year, we hope will preserve and keep doing well in school and try again next year. Members also don’t hang around after meet ings, shoot the bull or go out to dinner to gether like before. It’s too bad — I think golf course superintendents deserve more regular nights out together. I know it’s tough to balance work and fam ily, and I know that family comes first. But ev eryone, including spouses, needs more personal down time to relax. So having a night out once in awhile shouldn’t be a guilt trip for anyone. We find ourselves in a multi-tasking, media-blitzed information age. Folks need to have some time and space for themselves. Kids don’t stick around forever and once you find yourself in an empty nest, it would be nice to have a network of friends and activities. My wife and I only have one child — our daughter Jennifer. But we did all the stuff parents do, like providing transportation to baton, dance and piano lessons as well as YMCA Indian Princesses and Rifle Corps in high school band. We attended recitals, parades and every Friday night football game for four years. You know the drill if you are a supportive parent. Good times. Good fun. Excitement in competitions. But there was this other thing I also had going. I was involved with my local superintendents’ chapter, and almost once each month, with a few exceptions like the GCSAA conference or Florida Turfgrass Con ference, we had chapter meetings. Even those were opportunities to get away from the daily routine and be exposed to new people, experi ences and ideas to energize the mind. You know the monthly agenda— busi ness meeting, education, lunch and golf. Sometimes after golf a few of us would go out to dinner and wait out the rush-hour traffic. It was time to just be with friends and peers. We’d have some shop talk, sports talk, a few beers and a few laughs. Reprinted from July 2009 Golfdom Magazine Boys’ and Girls’ Nights Out BY JOEL JACKSON IT’S NOT SELFISH FOR PARENTS TO HAVE THEIR OWN TIME OR HOBBIES TO PURSUE Nowadays, I seldom see folks hanging out after meetings. I hear about a few foursomes around the state that play on Friday after noons rotating among their courses to talk about work and their golf games. I know times are always changing, but I see kids so over scheduled with activities that Mom and Dad or the kids have little time for just simple fun and relaxation, and I don’t mean video games. Get outside and explore. Learn how to find which way is north without a GPS. It’s not selfish for parents to have their own rime or hobbies to pursue, even if it’s to be alone in a boat or on a pier fishing or golfing with pals or a book club meeting. I think it’s healthy for mom and dad to get away for a break now and then. When I was a kid, we used to play a lot of pickup games of touch football, cork ball, flies and grounders, tag, hide and seek— all in the yard or side street. We didn’t have to have travel teams going to other cities or now even other states to compete and have fun. That takes rime and money, and time isn’t something you can save up. If play dates are so good for Junior and Sissy then what about for Mom and Dad? Lord knows kids will get enough regimen tation in school, and hopefully in service for their country and the business world. Mom and Dad have had that same regimentation, now they deserve a little rime to goof around doing what they like to do. Just remember if you do get to enjoy some more “Boys’ or Girls’ Days or Nights Out,” play responsibly and look both ways before crossing the street. GCSANJ FOUNDATION Your participation will ensure the success of this event and the future of the game! The Environmental Institute for Golf - For more than 50 years, this philanthropic organization of the GCSAA has contributed to the future of the game by initially providing funding for applied research, education and scholarships. Building on this legacy and armed with a new focus, The Institute now funds environmental programs to position golf courses as community assets - recreationally, economically and environmentally. For more on The Institute, visit www.eifg.org This event brings together superintendents and representatives from golf courses along the East Coast to raise funds for environmental programs, including scholarships, turf research programs and education initiatives. This event also serves to recognize the critical role played by superintendents in developing the vision of the golf course architect and ensuring the integrity of that vision. The GCSANJ Foundation raises funds to support education and professional development for its members to become better stewards of the environment. In addition, its mission is to support charities with the purpose of helping children in need. For more information, visit www.gcsanj.org.
