Paul Dotti, Arcola Country Club President's Message It seems like it was just yesterday that I became President of the GCSANJ and boy has time flown by. My time on the board has been a lengthy one, since 2000, and when I became a board From Your Exec Director Cece Peabody, MAT, CMP Executive Director Another Summer is over, but the Fall member, I had no aspirations of ever moving on to become President. After many years of being on the board and happy being the education chairman, John O’Keefe pulled me aside and told me I needed to move up to the Executive Board. I am one of those Superintendents who is married to his golf course and often does not get away, so I was not sure how these new responsibilities would affect my job. I can honestly say that it really had no impact on my job for 2 main reasons: the other dedicated people that serve on the Board and Cece Peabody, our Executive Director. There are and have been many dedicated people who have served on our boards and they have made a big difference in how our association has prospered through the good times and have survived through the difficult times. Unless you serve on a committee or on the board, you will not know how much Cece and her staff do for us. I remember back almost 10 years ago when we were doing everything ourselves for the association before Cece joined us, and she has not only made our association run smoother, she has made all of our jobs easier, so thank you Cece and staff. Bill Murray has been a great asset as our Past President as he is probably one of the most dedicated people that has served on our Board that I can remember, so thank you Bill for all your guidance the past 2 years. Lance Rogers will be our next President and he also has dedicated a lot of his time on our board and the board for the Foundation. Lance was the driving force behind starting up our summer social events years ago and he will be a great leader for the GCSANJ as we continue to work through these difficult times. Lance will also be surrounded by a very strong Board that also has the same vision to make this association stronger as we move forward. Thank you Shaun Barry for all that you do for our association. Words cannot describe everything Shaun does for us, so the next time you see him, just say thank you. In my 2 years, we made some positive changes that went against how we always did business. The first change was not taking part in the Noreaster at the National Golf Industry Show. Each year we paid $1500 to be a part of this social event, yet our members still had to pay for drinks etc. We decided to take that money and host our chapter at the National where all our members can come and have food and drink without having to spend any money. We have averaged about 100+ members in attendance the first 2 years we have done this. Continued on page 9 calendar has many GCSANJ events. Besides the Chapter Championship at Canoe Brook on September 19, the District IV Golf Event is reserved at Linwood CC (October 4), the RTJ Invitational at Metedeconk National (October 11), the C Championship at TPC Jasna Polana (November 5), and the Annual Meeting at Hominy Hill (November 13). Be sure to attend as many as you can. One can never say enough thank yous...and here I go again...THANK YOU for being a member of this chapter and for all you do to make it successful. Your board of directors works hard not just at monthly meetings but important time in between meetings to ensure you, as a member, get the most for your investment. Look forward to some new things happening in 2013. Membership renewal forms will be mailed on November 1st. Look at your Information Sheet to make sure we have your most current information. We've listened to your suggestions so there's something new on it too. In our efforts to be current in the digital world, you will have a choice to receive your 2013 Member Directory via email as a PDF file, or you can still receive a printed directory. You decide. I attended a meeting recently and the upbeat speaker talked about the “1440 Principle”. I had never heard of it so my curiosity was piqued. Did you know there are 1440 minutes in every day to ‘spend' as we want? Consider that those 1440 minutes are worth $1 each. Are you spending (ie. investing) enough of your 1440 or $1440 that you have each day in the things and people that make you happy or are you spending/investing those minutes on people who are negative, angry, bossy, pushy, or worse? Perhaps it's time to reevaluate. This was a life management as well as a time management presentation that seemed to impact everyone in the room. If we equated those 1440 minutes to dollars, we might reconsider where we ‘spend' them. Enjoy your Fall and I look forward to seeing you at our events. If we haven't met yet, please, say hi to me..I want to know every one of you. Cece Peabody Toms River Deals With Nature So It Can Host District III Again August 16, 2012 by Shaun Barry I have been at every District III Championship that Ed McSeaman and Toms River CC have hosted, and I can't remember the last time that Mother Nature hasn't played some major part of this event. This year was no exception but it was only a half-hearted attempt on her part. A higher than normal tide had caused several of the course's holes to be underwater for a while and untimely rain (12 inches in the 2 weeks before the meeting) kept everything extremely wet but that was it. Sure we had to keep our carts on the paths on several holes but only a few spots remained that were too wet to play from. As good as it was after these issues we could all see that if there had been no flooding or heavy rains, this course would have been perfect. Even so it was in wonderful shape. Ed's staff put forth an effort that really made him proud and our wonderful friend Tim Kerwin stopped over to help with the spraying. It was a year when everyone was on the same page. It doesn't get much better than that and Ed made a point to single out his guys during dinner. why this course has a slope rating of 129. It has narrow fairways, rain-fueled deep rough and small greens. People had asked Ed to move some of the normal pin locations and he did. I think they will ask him to move them back next year...LOL As we were taking down the scoresheets, it appeared that Peter VanDrumpt (87) had beaten Matt Dobbie (88) but Mike Weber got his score in just in time, and his 79 put Peter into second place. Ken Kubik played very well and his net 75 edged out Matt Dobbie on a match of cards. Without sponsors we used the funds donated by Atlantic Irrigation, Double D, and Syngenta to cover these prizes. Syngenta actually sponsored two of these prizes. Our Closest to the Pins and long-drives were sponsored. Black Lagoon Pond Management and Fisher & Son had two contests each and Levitt's, Trico Equipment and Wilfred MacDonald sponsored one each. One of Black Lagoon's holes had no winner so it was returned. The winners for the closest to the pins were Pat O'Neill (3ft 10 ins), Rob Johnson (31ft 5ins) and Phil O'Brien (3ft 8ins) The long drive winners were Russ Harris, Jerry Minlionica and Mike Tardogno. There were only 6 skins winners and once again my name was not on that list. Those winners were Joe Kinlin, Ken Mathis, Pat O'Neill, Steve Rudich, Ron Simpson Jr and Mike Weber. Things went very smoothly with scoring so we were able to make our announcements before the line for dinner started. Lance Rogers and Jim Cadott presented the plaque and the flag to Ed and Ed proudly introduced his staff which includes Maribeth O'Neill. Ed thanked Chuck Reynolds from SynaTek for sponsoring the water and soda. He also thanked Ken Kubik, Joe Kennedy and Jay McKenna for sponsoring the very popular beverage cart that kept everyone hydrated all day. The pioneers of our association who were in attendance were acknowledged. This year that group included Skip Cameron, Bob Dickison, Ken Kubik and Jim Pelrine. We also introduced Kevin Doyle who is always welcome to any of our meetings. Unfortunately we also had a brief moment of silence for Jim McNally, Billy Koonz Jr. and Fran Owsik's dad Frank. [Pictures on page 21] Continued on page 10 Every year I try and limit the field to 56 players which is a good number for a nine hole course and every year more people want to play and Ed hates to turn anyone away so we find room. This year we ended up with 64 players because one player cancelled the morning of the event. That allowed us to change a fivesome back to a foursome and Ed didn't have to secure more carts. He almost had to accept Fran Owsik's kind offer of bringing his own cart. Registration was run by the team of Kevin Driscoll, Ken Mathis and Phil O'Brien and once again they did a great job. Cece needed to be back at headquarters but her heart was at the meeting and many people missed seeing her. There was no sponsor for lunch (or dinner) but it was as plentiful and tasty as always. Unfortunately a few fellows arrived just as we were getting ready to leave. They were granted a short reprieve because that is when we pulled the 50/50. The winnings were small because the field was small but due to the generosity of Bob Dickison, the GCSANJ Foundation became $100 richer. Joe Kinlin and Phil O'Brien were the other winners. The field headed out to challenge the course and once again the course easily defeated us. This is a course that is all of 6,136 yards. It is a short course and we know the course. The course was wet so the greens were holding and they weren't overly fast. This sounds like a recipe for one or two of our A players to shoot a subpar round. It hasn't happened in the past and it didn't happen this day. There is a reason Neshanic Valley Golf Course Hosts 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship The Somerset County Park Commission’s Neshanic Valley Golf Course is the third New Jersey golf course to host the United States Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship (WAPL). Flanders Valley and Hominy Hill are the other two courses that have held this prestigious event. It is an eight day contest beginning with Saturday and Sunday practice rounds, followed by two days of stroke play in which 156 women vie for 64 spots. Match play begins on Wednesday and the field is cut in half after each match until one woman is crowned champion after 36-holes on Saturday. The WAPL contract was finalized in 2010, but it was not cut and dry. In order to host this championship, Neshanic would need to be closed for the duration of the event. Losing Neshanic for one week in June meant a potential loss in revenue. To offset that loss, we combined our Somerset County Golfer Magazine and USGA Championship Program and asked vendors and local businesses to advertise. We had 55 supporters purchase ads in the program and 14,000 copies were printed and disseminated. I would like to thank the following for their gracious support: Storr Tractor, Reed & Perrine, JESCO, NJTA, A.G. Enterprises, York Fence, Central Jersey Nursery, Green Pro Materials, Cammps, Wilfred MacDonald, Fire and Security Technologies, C&C Construction, Grass Roots, Jim Barrett, Fisher and Son, Primos Products, Aspire Consulting, Plant Food, Finch, NJ State Golf Association and Dr. Ilowite. This is only a microcosm of the tremendous backing and support we had in order to make this championship possible. Two years goes by fast and Andrew Hojnowski’s biggest challenge during the six months leading up to the event was constructing the 44’ long scoreboard, which he and his staff were able to do in-house. One positive aspect of having the mild winter was that it allowed him to begin work in December and have the majority of it completed by spring aeration (March 19th). While Andrew and his staff were busy constructing the scoreboard, Ed Highland coordinated the championship volunteer effort by sending requests to surrounding clubs. He did this while serving as interim superintendent at Warrenbrook Golf Course as the superintendent was out on maternity leave. Ed also oversees a four person project crew that was instrumental in accomplishing the aesthetic improvements to the golf course before the championship, as well as maintenance the week of. We were pleased with the stalwart support and would like to thank the 25 staff members from our by Darrell Marcinek, CGCS other four golf courses as well as the 25 volunteers that helped from surrounding clubs. Thanks to Green Knoll, Quail Brook, Spooky Brook, Warrenbrook, Trump National Bedminster, Bayonne, Hamilton Farm, Ridgewood, Plainfield and Storr Tractor for sending your staff at such a busy time of the year. Having a five course system is a luxury in that equipment can be transferred if there is a tournament at a specific course. Again, thanks to our other four courses for lending us equipment to handle the championship and thank you to our fleet manager “Mop” for coordinating. However, additional resources were still needed and Storr Tractor, Wilfred MacDonald and Finch really came through and loaned us the equipment necessary to handle the extra tasks required for this championship. The aforementioned golf courses not only loaned us staff members, but essential tools that would allow us to handle a major catastrophe if it happened (i.e. a rain event). Keith Kubik and the Grass Roots team were helpful in transporting a flagstick caddie from Ridgewood to Neshanic and then back to Ridgewood. Thank you to Canoe Brook as well for loaning us rope stakes enabling us to direct foot traffic around the putting green, 1st and 10th tees, and 9th and 18th greens. The championship was an eight day event and we were lucky enough to have fairly decent weather the entire week. The middle part of the week was warm for this time of the year, but Andrew, Tom Marshall and Greg Atanasio were prepared for whatever Mother Nature threw at us. Adam Moeller was the lead agronomist on site and he worked closely with Andrew and his team to ensure green speed, firmness and moisture were exactly where they should be. I know you guys could not have done it without the guidance of Greg the Meteorologist! There was a 30 minute weather delay the second to last day of the event, but there were only four ladies on the course at that time and they were directed to an evacuation center only a few hundred yards away. On Saturday, the championship concluded with Kyung Kim defeating Ashlan Ramsey 4&2. Kyung is 18 years old and Ashlan is 16 and what bright futures they both have. Everything went really well the entire week and I believe my term for championship week was “scary smooth”. Everyone showed up when they were scheduled to work, Continued on page 10 Rolling Greens GC Opens Its Doors Once Again to Host District 1 & II by Shaun Barry Lunch went well with everyone having plenty to eat and drink. We gathered at our carts and drew tickets for the 50/50. The first winner was our host and the second winner was Jay McKenna although those tickets really belonged to Ken Kubik. With that done everyone headed out to their tees. A few of us took the circuitous route but eventually play started and the fun continued and I think everyone found the stationary refreshment cart filled with cold soda, water and adult beverages. When all 36 players finished the scoring went quickly. Jim Swiatlowski was pleased with his 68 and it looked like a winner until Mark Miedler posted his even par 65. Since you can only win one scoring prize, Mark took low gross honors but he also would have taken the low net prize. Jim would have taken 2nd place in both contests but we gave him 1st place in low net with a 63. Grover Alexander was awarded 2nd low gross with his 69 and Jeff Smolha was second low net with a 65. Our skill contests were all sponsored. Josh Kopera (8ft 2ins-Bayer sponsored), Ian Kunesch (3ft 0ins-Syngenta sponsored) and John Alexander (7ft 2ins- Wilfred MacDonald sponsored ) were your closest to the pin winners and Chris Hunt won the long drive sponsored by Syngenta. Continued on page 13. Bayer Even though Andy Schuckers is off the GCSANJ board he stays involved as much as possible. He and Ian Kunesch were the team that got both districts to Rolling Greens GC in 2011 and they did so again this year. Now of course it is easier when one of the people in the conversation is a GCSANJ member and also the owner of the course. Ian has owned the course for many years and it was the reason why he left his superintendent job at Panther Valley Golf & CC. Since then he has worked and worried every day trying to make this little gem be successful. It is not always easy but he hasn't given up and he always has a smile. He has remained an active member of our association and is always looking to be helpful. He first suggested his course as a site for the district meetings as early as 2005. He may have done so even earlier than that but this is about when I first remember hearing him make the offer. For whatever reason it never happened until Andy was told that as district director it was his responsibility to pick a site. This happened during a board meeting and while it was still going on he had contacted Ian and they had a date and a time and a price within 10 minutes. That was such a fun event, it was an easy choice once again this year. I think Andy was again involved with the choice but Les Carpenter readily signed off on it even knowing that his work schedule wouldn't allow him to play. It was a good choice because we had one of the largest fields in memory. Gone are the days of 16 or 24 players. We had 36 golfers find the time to get away so they could challenge the course and have a really nice and casual day. The weather couldn't have been better. It was a nice, cool morning and never got really hot or humid. Even though the course had suffered a little from the summer stress we could have played summer rules and the greens were just great. I just hope Ian never decides to make the course play tough for us. His son Marc (GCSANJ Scholarship winner) is a tremendous young golfer and he brought over some of his friends to play. These young guys were the current NJSGA Amateur champions, one of them is ranked 30th in the country in the amateur ranks and the other plays for St Johns University. A pretty decent foursome on any course. Ian did crank things up a little bit and he did tuck the flagsticks and the kids had a ball. One of the guys said that he had recently played a great old Ross course and he only had to hit 4 or 5 different clubs. This day he hit every club in his bag. A pretty strong comment coming from a great golfer. While Crystal was a very good event for our Association, it was running its course and with this economy, we had to think about our Affiliates, who tried to support both the Crystal Conference and Green Expo, which were only a month apart. Let’s face it, many of us do not have a lot of extra time or money and by having one great event instead of 2 good events this was a home run for everyone involved and I look forward to watching it grow moving forward. Recently we also proposed a bylaw change that would change our district director format in which we would only have 1 district director per district and 4 at large directors to serve on the Board. This will open up more opportunities for members who want to get involved on our Board but may not have an opening in their district. We always need members to get involved and serve on the Board and there are times when multiple members want to run out of 1 district but there are no vacancies at the time. This will allow those members who do want to get involved to be able to do so. One final thing we are still working on is the possibility of moving our offices into the new clubhouse at Galloping Hills GC, where the NJSGA will also have their offices. Union County has invested a great deal of money into this facility and they want it to be the hub of golf in New Jersey and if this opportunity becomes a reality, this will be a great opportunity for us to showcase our Association and strengthen our ties with the other golf associations in the state. We have made great efforts to build bridges to the NJPGA, NJSGA and Club Managers over the last few years and will continue to do so moving forward. Also over the past few years, our Board has faced ethics issues that have been brought to our attention. Our profession has always had a code of ethics that we always abided by but that seems to be changing a bit. We all know we live in a dog eat dog world, no matter what business we are in, but we need to go back to the way we used to do things. If you are going to somebody’s golf course, give them a call or email them to let them know you will be there. If there is a job opening at a golf course, contact the outgoing superintendent to let them know you will be visiting the golf course. We need to conduct ourselves professionally at all our meetings, whether it is golf, social or educational. We also need to pick up the phone and contact our neighbors, maybe get together, play golf or have lunch. Continued on page 10 2012 Rutgers Turfgrass Research Field Days: July 31 - Golf & Fine Turf By the time that you glance at this article the Rutgers Field Days will be a distant memory but you should see quite a few photos from that day. Those photos come from the Golf Field Day which is always held at Hort Farm II. If you are in this industry and you really want to be on the cutting edge this is an event that shouldn't be missed. As usual we had superintendents from all over the Northeast and a few from Canada. They recognize the value of the work being doing at Rutgers. If there is a problem with cool-season turfgrass, Rutgers will be working on it. They have an amazing staff of world- renowned scientists and I can confidently say that no school has a better program. When this event happens in 2013 (July 30th), do yourself a favor and put it on your calendar. You will learn something that will help you do your job better, and you will get to meet many of your fellow superintendents doing the same thing. Toms River Continued from page 5: I don't know how Ed does it but he arranged for a trio to entertain with some great music before, during and after our meal. It was wonderful and I hated to leave but I was heading to Canada early the next morning. Before I left I did ask Ed about next year, and as usual he said he would once again be proud to be our host ,but he did say that if someone else had a burning desire to host in 2013 that would be ok also. Like all great leaders he knows that others need to step up for associations to continue but I have a feeling we will be seeing him and Toms River again next year. Ed, please thank everyone at Toms River CC for their help and for allowing us to enjoy their fine golf course. Thank Brendan for his assistance and as always thank Nancy for all that she does for you so you can do for us. President's Message Continued from page 9 I am married to the golf course and believe it or not, I left to have lunch with my neighbors and my course was still there an hour or so later. We all know Mother Nature has been relentless the last few years and sometimes we need that hour just to talk with other people who are going through the same problems as us or just to have a change of scenery. We all know our industry is small, so word travels fast when something occurs, but it seems the camaraderie that used to be there is missing. Finally, get involved in the Association because it cannot run itself. We need members to get involved. I remember Jim McNally asked me to get involved and come on the Board back in 1999, and when I look back, I do not regret any time I have spent doing it. I have met many great members and have worked with many great members and have learned a great deal while doing it. If you cannot get on the Board right now, start by getting on a committee, as we always need new faces with new ideas to get involved. Your Board works extremely hard as does your executive director to make sure you get the most out of your membership, but your input and support is needed as well. Thank you again to Cece, the current board and past boards for allowing me to be the President of the GCSANJ. I will cherish the times I have spent with all of you. Paul Dotti President, GCSANJ Superintendent: Arcola Country Club Neshanic Valley Continued from page 6 there were no torrential rain storms, no hydraulic leaks, no irrigation issues and no fights or major arguments. The only issue arose the Sunday before when an agreement I had to provide dinner to the staff fell through. Much to my chagrin I sent out an email requesting help and within 24 hours, I had all eight evenings covered. Thank you to Fisher and Son (two evenings), Grass Roots, Reed & Perrine, Advanced Agrium Technologies, Fertl Soil, Harrells and Syngenta for furnishing a catered dinner from La Strada Café in Neshanic Station to a very dedicated group of staff and volunteers. Many others contacted me after I confirmed all eight dinners and I thank you as well. This is one aspect that I really love about our business and is what sets our industry apart from all others. Our boss has already written a letter to the USGA inviting them back for the Men’s version of this championship (the APL). That in itself is a compliment to Andrew, his vigilant staff and the tremendous support network that we had. This was truly a team effort and we look forward to doing it again whenever that may be. Neshanic Valley Women's Public Links Mark Peterson Hosts The MET Team Championship Qualifier August 27, 2012 by Shaun Barry On August 27th we had a group of members show- up at Makefield Highlands to compete for some open spots on the GCSANJ's team that will play at the MET Team Championship which will be held at Stanwich CC in CT. The reason for this qualifier is that NJ did not win last year as we had done the previous 2 years. If a team wins, they are all invited back to defend but now was the time for everyone to try and win a spot on the team. We were looking for the lowest gross scores only from this group. The actual event has 4 players playing gross and 4 playing net. Our net players have done very well with Bill Murray and Chris Boyle teaming up to be low net team 3 times out of the last five events and the other times they were tied for 2nd and 3rd. That is a pairing that needs to keep going. Wendell Beakley has also played beautifully on the net side and his spot was safe. We had 16 people sign-up but 3 had to cancel and Frank Tichenor tried to play but wisely gave up after nine. By the time you read this he will have had his knee operation and hopefully will be back on the road to playing well. The day could have been washed out. A nasty line of storms ran over us a couple times but most of the day they were seen but were not felt. The course had gotten plenty of rain already and this would have put it over the top. We got lucky and the course was in great shape. What a wonderful combination of great looking and playing holes. I can see why Mark enjoys caring for this property. Mark was first off and he played well but just not well enough to qualify. Bill Murray and Wendell were there to play Mark's place. Their scores didn't count but their enjoyment did. When all of the scores were entered the level of play was pretty similar. Tom Grimac led the day with a fine 78. He was followed by Brian Minemier, Jay Antonelli, Ian Kunesch and Joe Kinlin who all shot 79. This worked out well because I was going to pick a partner for Wendell. Everyone enjoyed a few moments of cooling off and discussing their rounds. Soon everyone was on the way home to get back to the real world. The story should end there but it doesn't. Brian Minemier called me that evening. He had been going over his score and something didn't seem right with his total. I didn't have the cards with me at the time so I asked him to call back and to keep running the numbers in his mind. When we did speak again we went over the scores hole by hole. It turns out that he was correct. On the 12th hole he had made a 7 and a 5 was entered as his score. That meant he had shot an 81 and he was out of the event, and this is an event that he really enjoys playing. That is a wonderful example of what real golfers do and I am so very proud to call Brian a good friend. As I spoke to the other team members telling them about the change they all expressed their pride and respect in Brian's actions. He is a true gentleman of the game. Bobby Jones would have been proud of his actions. That left one spot open and that goes to Jeff Wyant who shot an 80. He will team up with Tom Grimac on the gross side along with Ian Kunesch and Jay Antonelli. Bill and Chris remain a team on the net side and Wendell's new partner is Joe Kinlin. Congratulations gentlemen and bring home the title to GCSANJ. It will be tough but you have the team that can do it. L-R:Brian Minemier, Jim Swiatlowski, Tom Grimac, and Bob Prickett. All 4 of these gentlemen have represented GCSANJ at the MET Team Championship in the past but only Tom played well enough to advance to Stanwich CC. L-R:Jay Antonelli, John Alexander, and Ian Kunesch. Jay and Ian are going to Stanwich but an unfortunate triple on 18 knocked John out. If he had made par, he would have tied for the low round of the day. L-R:Rob Johnson, Bill Murray, Jeff Wyant. Bill Murray was already on the team but he came to share the day with Jeff. It worked because Jeff qualified but Rob will have to wait until the next time. Rolling Greens GC Continued from page 7 Chris had to leave before the prizes were awarded and we think he was rushing to see his chiropractor because he hit that ball so far he had to have hurt his back.. We had 10 skin winners which happens when you have a small field and good golfers. With one skin each we had John Alexander, Paul Dotti, Matt Sudol, Jim Swiatlowski and Jeff Wyant. Collecting 2 skins was Grover Alexander which left 3 skins for Mark Miedler. The day ended as nicely as it started. Dinner was enjoyed, winners found gifts in the pro-shop and people were sitting and talking long after the official part of the day had finished. Everyone was complimentary of Ian and the course and there is talk of this being the site for next year and years to come. Whether that happens or not I know these have been two very good events and if you get the chance to play here do so. President Paul Dotti made his usual presentation of a plaque and our flag to Ian but he had a couple more to present. They went to to a couple surprised recipients. He gave Andy a plaque for his time on the board and ended with a plaque for Chris Boyle. Chris spent 10 years serving our members going from a director all of the way up to vice-president. He was a little tired from getting no sleep with their new-born foster child but he was thrilled to be honored and promised that the plaque would hang proudly in his office. The Environmental Institute For Golf (EIFG) As always, the Institute is always grateful for the support from members. The financial assistance it receives from individuals and chapters goes a long way to fund programs and philanthropic endeavors on behalf of the members. Your support of the RTJ Invitational helps keep research, scholarships and environmental progress moving forward to the benefit of the entire industry. One program the EIFG is spearheading can help those programs at the New Jersey level specifically. Rounds 4 Research is a chapter-based initiative to do just that. The GCSA of the Carolinas had raised $130,000 in three years, soliciting donated rounds of golf from members, and then auctioning them off through a web based platform. GCSAA, and more specifically the EIFG, are now expanding this same premise on a national level. Donated rounds of golf specifically designated to benefit the GCSA of NJ are donated. The EIFG adds those rounds on to the auction platform Bidding for Good (over 600,000 registered users, #1 bidding item platform wide: ROUNDS OF GOLF!!) • The revenue generated gets returned to the chapter to benefit scholarships, research, outreach, environmental programs, or any other use in line with the principles of the EIFG. Adding significantly to programs the chapter currently participates in. Currently 80% of the revenue will be returned to the chapter; however that percentage may increase over time should program costs diminish. • • • Find out more at http://www.rounds4research.com As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance. Thank you again for all your support and I look forward to seeing you again soon! Kevin Doyle GCSAA Field Staff: Northeast Region Arcola CC Hosts 2012 NJ Professional Championship Paul Dotti, along with Chris Kastner and their staff worked very hard to prepare Arcola CC for this major tournament on the NJ calendar of golf events. Anyone who knows Paul knows that he by Shaun Barry takes his job very seriously and that he is very good at what he does and it showed. It has not been an easy year to be a superintendent, and many folks did get dinged up a bit but Arcola was perfect. Gary Arlio was speaking to a few of the contestants who had played on tour, and they said that this course was absolutely in tour condition. Quite a compliment. Paul had Gary and Brad Sparta there every day of the tournament and I am sure that was comforting. He also had Dave Dudones and John Topakas play in the pro- am and Matt Dobbie was there on Tuesday and Wednesday caddying for his brother. What Paul appreciated was that Dave, John and Matt called to let him know that they were going to be on his property. It is nice to see our guys keeping up that professional tradition. Congratulations to Paul and to everyone of our members who have hosted a NJSGA or PGA event this year. It takes a lot of work and often goes unnoticed, but your fellow superintendents recognize the efforts needed to succeed and you have their respect. Above: Gary Arlio (l) presents a GCSANJ plaque to Paul Dotti (r) to honor the wonderful job that Paul and his staff did in preparing Arcola Country Club to host the 2012 NJ PGA. The Liquid Fertilizer Experts www.plantfoodco.com Rutger2011 Non-GCSANJ Golf Results & Member News by Shaun Barry I was just looking at an article that Dave Pease, Bill Murray and Ron Luepke individually sent to me. That is a bit strange, but they wanted to share the success that one of their co-workers had on the course. It turns out that Courtney Kling (Picture below) tied for 3rd in the gross competition at the NJSGA Women's Public Links Championship. Courtney works at Monmouth County's Golf Central and is also a member of the GCSANJ. In looking at all of the other results I quickly saw that Elizabeth Kunesch had tied for 10th at the same gross event and was tied for 7th in the net. Courtney was tied for 4th. Some great golf from our extended family. This prompted me to see if any familiar names could be found from tournaments hosted by the NJSGA this year. It turns out that the Kunesch name did really well. The patriarch of the family, Ian, tied for 37th in the pre-senior and he teamed up with Elizabeth for a tie for 9th in the Mixed-Pinehurst. Elizabeth continued her good play and finished tied for 42nd in the Women's Amateur which put her just behind Courtney who tied for 38th. Completing the family story we have Marc (a recent GCSANJ Scholarship winner) who finished 5th in the Men's Public Links. His 2-day total of 145 was just one over par. Congratulations to everyone on their great play and we should also acknowledge Jay Antonelli who was tied for 5th in the Senior Four-Ball. Jim Swiatlowski (Senior Amateur) and Jim Woods (Men's Public Links) both missed qualifying by 2 shots, but that is still great play under tournament conditions. Hopefully all of your hard work will carry over to next year and even better results are achieved. Courtney King, Golf Programmer and Admin Asst for Monmouth Cnty Golf Operations placed third in the NJSGA Women’s Public Links at Knob Hill GC. With find showings in both events, she competed with the NJSGA Women’s Amateur at Crestmont and the MET Women’s Public Links held at Flanders Valley. Stanley J. Zontek, director of the USGA Green Section's Mid-Atlantic Region, passed away on August 28th after suffering a heart attack. He was 63. The organization's longest-tenured employee, Stanley joined the USGA in 1971 after graduating from Penn State University. Stanley was a world- renowned turfgrass expert who shared his extensive knowledge for 41 years through articles, speeches and course visits. He was recognized for his contributions with many awards, including the 2006 Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Distinguished Service Award, the 1997 Golf Course Builders Association of America Don A. Rossi Award and the 2007 Crop and Soil Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award from his alma mater. He was a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and the British International Golf Greenkeepers Association. Stanley helped establish many of the best turfgrass practices still in use. During his career, he helped thousands of courses around the world to achieve the best conditions possible, whether in preparation for USGA championships, for everyday play or while helping maintain the putting green at the White House. As much as he was respected for his professional expertise, Stanley touched many more lives with his passion, generosity and spirit. He was always willing to help out, and he gave far more of himself than he took from others. He loved the USGA and dedicated his career to serving the game that he loved. Bayonne’s links design pays worthy homage to the great seaside courses of Scotland and Ireland. Twisting and tumbling, the holes weave among the towering dunes like they do at Turnberry or Ballybunion. The unique waterfront setting not only lends itself to fresh sea breezes, but dazzling views of New York Harbor’s dynamic landscape and Manhattan’s iconic skyline. The challenging course has achieved international recognition from some of the finest publications. Bayonne Golf Club is an exclusive private membership club by invitation only. Just 15 minutes from Manhattan by car, members can also touch down on Bayonne’s private helipad, or dock their own boats into the club’s private marina. By far the most civilized way to get to Bayonne is by the club’s private 53’ luxury ferry that transports members to and from Manhattan — a scenic 20 minute ride to the course, passing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island along the way. Bayonne Golf Club... on New York Harbor Scott A. Carpenter, CGCS, Brooklake Country Club, renewed and has maintained his status as a Association of America. Congratulations! It’s the first sprayer designed to improve the health of your course and your bottom line. The Toro Multi Pro 5800 delivers the kind of accuracy, ease of use, time savings, and enhanced value you simply can’t find anywhere else. A quantum leap in sprayer technology. We optimized everything on the Multi Pro 5800, from the pump to the nozzles. With the industry’s first 6-diaphragm pump, the Multi Pro 5800 achieves higher spray rates and more aggressive agitation for better blending of chemicals, so you don’t have to worry about over or under applying, or chemical residue left in the tank. Our new Air-Induction Spray Nozzles produce more uniform droplets for better spray accuracy, lower drift and more even coverage. Perfect spraying conditions. We wanted to make spraying a breeze, so we took the breeze out of the picture. We engineered a Covered Boom Shroud that works with our new nozzles to achieve the highest rating for drift reduction in windy conditions. Then we created an Ultra Sonic Boom leveling kit that utilizes a new, state-of-the-art sensor system and quick responding boom lift cylinders to maintain perfect height. And if that’s not enough, we offer a wide range of accessories designed to boost your productivity and make your job easier. The best in class. In any class. Before we designed the Multi Pro 5800, we asked customers what they wanted in a sprayer. We kept working until we satisfied all their specifications. So whether you’re looking for more uniform and accurate spray coverage, improved agitation, superior system response, or easy-to-use controls and timesaving features, the Toro Multi Pro 5800 is the one sprayer that has it all, and does it all. The right choice. Experience the future of sprayer technology today. To arrange for a demo of the new Toro Multi Pro 5800, call 800-803-8676 or visit toro.com/multipro for more information. . d e v r e s e r s t h g i r l l A . y n a p m o C o r o T e h T 2 1 0 2 © STC Storr Tractor Company Storr Tractor Company Branchburg, NJ 908-722-9830 storrtractor.com TORO Count on it.
