PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Russell Harris, Galloping Hill Golf Course Finishing yet another New Jersey Green Expo Show a few weeks ago, has made me look back at the last year, and the many years before it, and re alize all of the friendships and relationships I have gained from being in this business. I personally would like to thank the GCSANJ Board of Directors and the membership for electing me President of this great association. I only hope I can fill the shoes of the Presidents before me. I'd also like to thank Gary Arlio for his many years of service to our board and association. I learned a lot over this past year from Gary and for that I am thankful. This last year for me personally has seen many ca reer accomplishments reached. To me this business is a family of guys and gals who have a passion for the game of golf and for all of the qualities and life lessons the game has to offer. It's a privilege and a challenge moving forward in 2017 to serve this outstanding GCSANJ member ship as President. I am very excited to work with our new members of the Board of Directors in ac complishing some of our goals established at our most recent planning meeting in December. One of those goals was to increase our member ship in all of our membership classes. We would also like to advance our social media by gaining a wider footprint of Facebook Page Likes, and follow ers on Twitter. I would also like our general membership to partic ipate more on some of our respective committees such as: education, golf, membership, public rela tions, assistants, and government relations. The GCSANJ is dedicated to serving its members, advancing their profession, and enhancing the en joyment, growth, and vitality of the game of golf. Also, don't forget to visit our brand new web site which was built with all our members in mind, I feel that this site can and will become a valuable resource and tool for all members. Wishing you all a healthy and successful 2017! He has had health issues that would have caused many to say no to hosting but that wasn't Ed. He always put the GCSANJ and his course ahead of other issues but even before the job he puts his wife Nancy and his family first. Friends come after that and then his love for his job and his GCSANJ family is close behind. He is a great friend and I was proud to be asked to write this article and to announce his name at the Green Expo. Congratulations Ed on a well deserved award! Ed McSeaman (left), receiving Distinguished Service Award at the 2016 Green Expo, from Russell Harris, President of GCSANJ. Ed McSeaman accepting the DSA and sharing his thanks to all. Ed and his wife Nancy waiting for the presentation at the Green Expo. This award is given to a GCSANJ member for a lifetime of service. This award was first given in 1986 to Al Radko from the USGA. For most award winners that lifetime of service doesn't end with the presentation of the award. Most of the winners are like 2015 DSA Steve Finamore CGCS, who continues to add to his legacy. That will be true of our 2016 winner as he is not done yet. Our 31st DSA was an easy choice. It was a unanimous vote in fact. Any member can nominate a person for the award but the only people who can vote are past presidents of GCSANJ and the current president. Our 2016 winner has never hosted a national or state event. He has never been able to serve on the GCSANJ BODs. He has spent most of his ca reer working at a nine hole course . He joins Doug Vogel (2013) in being the only superintendents from nine hole courses who have received this award. What he has done is host the District 3 Championship for 28 straight years. Most people will now immediately know that the winner is Ed McSea- man. He is at Toms River CC where his responsibilities have covered far more than the job of superintendent. In those 28 years his course has been flooded many times right before our event. Since the course is below sea level, I guess that is to be expected but when you are inviting a group of superintendents to your course and they don't miss any imperfection, that is quite daunting. Only once did we have to postpone the event for a couple of weeks because of flooding but we did play the event. 5 COURSES. 81 TOTAL HOLES. 365 DAYS A YEAR. Philadelphia wins 2016 MET Team Championship at CC of Scranton The 36th Annual MET Team Championship was held on Monday, September 26th at The Country Club of Scranton in Clarks Summit, PA. Host Greg Boring, who recently took on the role of General Manager on top of his Superintendent duties had the golf course in absolutely spectacular shape after one of the driest and hottest seasons on record in the Northeast. Players from up and down the east coast were equally impressed at how fast and smooth the greens were at Scranton! The 1927 Walter Travis original has undergone a massive tree management program, opening up sight lines and restoring views on the golf course, as well as opening up golf holes and allowing the course to be played the way Travis intended it according to Greg. In 2010 the club hired Tom Marzolf of Fazio Design to complete a master plan, restoring bunkers and bringing greens back to their original shapes and sizes. Scranton is a perennial top 100 classical golf course and has hosted several major events, including the men's and women's State Amateurs Championships over the years. Scranton is a true gem of a course and by all accounts, another great course on the MET Team Championship rotation! This year's championship was one of the closest battles ever contested with just 6 shots separating the top 5 teams! For the 4th time in the past 12 the Philadelphia AGCS came away victorious after narrowly beating Connecticut by just one stroke with a score of 292! The team from Philadelphia included John Gosselin, Andy Drohen, Joe Owsik and Chet Walsh on the Gross side and Rich Sweeney, Jon Urbanski, Sumner Cross and Rob Nolek on the Net side. Once again the MET Team Championship was made possible by our 7 major sponsors who have stepped up year after year to make this one of the best events across North America! Please join me in thanking Aquatrols, BASF, Bayer, Care of Trees, Koch Turf & Ornamental, Syngenta and Toro as they continue to support this event. The Met Team Championship continues to raise money each year to help those in our industry going through difficult times. Over the past 6 years we have raised over $7,500 and have supported superintendents, industry representatives and their families in times of need. This past year we donated $2,000 to the superintendents at The Greenbrier in West Virginia after the devastating flooding that took place there this summer. Thanks again to all our sponsors, Greg Boring and his entire staff and all the folks at The Country Club of Scranton for another successful championship! A special thank you to Shaun Barry, our perennial photographer! We have uploaded all of Shaun's photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/118804232@N02/albums/72157673518202591 . This event was run and organized by Tyler Otero and Jamie Devers and the Golf Committee. Our host was Jeremy Batz at Trump Colts Neck. We had 32 players trying to qualify in windy conditions. Tim McAvoy was automatically part of the team because he won the Sherwood Moore Cup at Roxiticus last fall. Unfortunately he wasn't able to participate so there were 8 spots open. The 4 low gross scores came from Jeremy Batz, Vince Giunco, Jeff Haas and Tony Hooks. John Alexander was the first alternate followed by Rob Johnson. When Tony had to drop out his spot went to John Alexander and when John had to drop out the spot went to Rob Johnson. Rob proved he was a good choice because he teamed up with Jeff and they shot a 72 gross score and that was the lowest gross score of any team. The next best gross score was a 74. Well done Jeff & Rob. Steve Juhring started his day with a 16. How do you make a 16? I don't know because I wasn't going to ask but he followed that up with 4 birdies and shot a 91. An excellent score and next time he may skip the first hole....:-) The net team qualifiers were Chris Boyle, Jeremy Hreben, Ian Kunesch and Bill Murray. Chris and Ian are Leslie and Stanley Cup partners so they played together and Bill and Jeremy were partners. Bill & Jeremy shot a net 69 and Chris and Ian shot a 72. Two excellent scores on a beautiful but extremely windy and challenging course. Bill keeps calling himself the “old man” but he keeps showing us that he still plays like a young man. We finished 3rd and that was only 3 shots from a tie for 1st. It was excellent play from our team and it looks like our future will only get better. employers and employees both and lead to a long and enjoyable career. THIRTY YEARS AND COUNTING - by Les Carpenter Jr, Newton Country Club I am sitting in my office on a cold rainy Saturday morning, last night I was honored with a big celebration by my membership. We were celebrating my 30th season at Newton Country Club. To me it was honestly not a big deal but I guess 30 years at any one thing is pretty good. Considering that the average tenure for a Golf Course Superintendent at a private facility is only 8-10 years according to the latest surveys, it is an accomplishment. club, so some of these things I do out of necessity but that does not diminish the importance of being out there on the course. I learned in an age where you did everything, I am as comfortable on a bulldozer as a greens mower. I can fabricate and weld and also have become pretty handy with wrenches too. At our course we do 90% of the golf course construction and projects ”in-house” as they say, and while it has not always been easy, it's been a part of the learning experience, and has been very rewarding. The last aspect of what it takes to be successful is to try to stay current. Follow through with as much continuing education as you can. You should also immerse yourself in the professional associations aligned with this industry. I have been a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of NJ for over 40 years, I have volunteered on various committees and presently serve as Vice President. I am also a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and involved there too. I am in the Ambassador Program working with local politicians on golf and turf related legislation and also the Melrose Leadership Academy working on scholarship's for superintendent's to attend GIS. There is also the New Jersey Turfgrass Association. All of these organizations offer great opportunities for networking and education. The interactions you will have with your peers gained through membership and participation in these organizations will be extremely important. You will find the educational aspect to be invaluable and can create lifelong friendships with people whom have similar interests as you. All of the best superintendents that I know are probably right in the middle of the worst jobs at their course. It could be in a muddy hole making a crucial irrigation repair, or in the middle of construction doing final grade or laying sod. This being said I do not have a person on my staff that would refuse to do anything I've asked of them. Not out of fear, or because I am their boss. They would do it because they have no doubt seen me do it. As I alluded to earlier the demands on your time are great and non-stop. While all this is important and necessary, I still implore you to remember you're only as good as your staff. You can't do it all alone. Take some time now and then and be a people person, along with a hands on approach as much as you can. It will pay dividends with both your I was contemplating just what it took to get me here. I grew up in this business. My dad is a retired “Super” who spent well over 25yrs. at his last course and I have a younger brother who is in his 33rd year at his facility. I think I've grown up and learned in an environment that put me in a position to be successful in this industry. This business is getting much more technical. You must now be doing all types of soil and tissue testing, and much more reporting to government agencies. There are social media requirements, newsletters and twitter and blogs but I still think the most important thing is to take time to be a “hands on guy,” a guy who is willing to lead by example. Superintendents are now viewed as turf professionals as opposed to just greens-keepers and as I mentioned before I realize there are many more demands on our time. Like budgeting and water reports also work with various committees, and this is only a slice of a Super's day. I have been a Superintendent for 38 seasons now but you can still catch me on a greensmower or out changing holes to help prepare for a tournament. If you want to have a greens staff that respects you and will do it all for you, they need to see you out there in the trenches with them now and then. My club is a smaller modest private Photo by Jake West/new Jersey Herald- MaryBeth Kohberger, Robin Kohberger, Les Carpenter and Dana Carpenter pose for a picture during a celebration dinner to honor their 30 years of service at Newton Country Club, on Friday, Oct 21, 2016, in Newton. LIFE IN THE SHAKY ISLES - by Leo Barber, Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club It is still very early days but no doubt in amongst the carnage there will be many of our golf in dustry friends with courses and clubs that will be badly affected. These are already modestly run affairs that can probably least af ford the literal upheaval and my thoughts go out to them, their families and most importantly their communities for which the golf club often plays a significant role. As for us all here in Wellington, we will go about our lives as we have always done, mindful of Mother Nature and her ability to surprise but still wondering, “was that the big one?” I for one certainly hope so - we have the All Blacks to fol low this weekend! Leo Barber Course Superintendent Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club As I settle down to write this arti cle, an all too familiar creaking of the clubhouse walls occurs as an other earthquake ripples through the building.....just another of the 300 or so aftershocks that have rocked the small island nation of New Zealand since the big 7.5 shake that awoke us all from our sleep at 12.02am, struck on Sun day night. This is life living on the edge of the ring of fire in a region dubbed as, “the shaky Isles” and whilst New Zealand where I was born, grew up and subsequently returned to after a stint living abroad is known for its scenery, its pristine environ ment, warmth of welcome and of course its mighty All Black rugby warriors, it is also no stranger to quakes. With 14,000 earthquakes registered in and around the coun try each year, thankfully the vast majority of these are impercepti ble but “the big one” is never too far from our minds and unfortu nately over the short history of our nation we have been delivered a couple. The Napier Earthquake of 1931 claimed 256 lives including that of my great grandmother who was captured on a collapsing staircase whilst delivering meals to trainee Priests at a local seminary. My grandmother just a young girl, huddled on an elementary school playing field and watched as a huge swath of land was lifted from the ocean changing the landscape forever. My grandmother wrote in her final memoirs of this day that left her and her sister orphaned as a moment she truly believed the world was about to end. On Sunday as I stood in the hall way of our Paraparaumu house just north of Wellington, trying to stand with my wife as my kids hud dled beneath us like the little tur tles every Kiwi child gets taught to make in preparation for these very events, my brother and his fam ily like many were being thrown around their 11th story apartment in the middle of Wellington think ing those exact same thoughts our grandmother had felt some 80 years previous. Wellington, straddles several ma jor fault lines and has been wait ing for “the big one” ever since my Dad's dad was little. Built around a beautiful harbour, its houses cling to hillsides and many of its build ings sit on shaky reclaimed land. Thankfully these buildings have been engineered with codes and technology to withstand these substantial shakes although whilst the structure remains intact, its occupants and their possessions get tossed around like an out of control teenage party in a bad neighbourhood. The building stood as did all the others as well and whilst the clean up will take a while for many in Wellington, sadly further south in the small provincial towns of the upper South Island, many have not been so lucky. Loss of life fortu nately for the main part has been spared but their infrastructure and buildings have not and many now face the prospect of years of rebuilding their communities and their lives. A GOLF COURSE TREE MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY - by Todd Raisch, Ridgewood Country Club “I sometimes take my very life in my hands when I suggest that a certain tree happens to be spoiling a pretty good golf hole.” - A. W. Tillinghast At most golf courses and private clubs, tree management is a very sensitive subject that can cause great angst and division amongst members and patrons should the tree's care not be handled just right. Over the course of the last fifteen years, Ridgewood Country Club has removed nearly 4,000 trees and spent hundreds of thousands for the care of the remaining ones. It has been a bumpy ride at times, but as is often the case with any set of maintenance standards and procedures, designing a tree management philosophy went a long way to assuage member concern. Below is our stated philosophy designed in consultation with our arborist and golf course architect. “RCC has a long history of great trees on our Paramus property. Thousands of trees from dozens of species line the fairways and clubhouse area. The major species include varieties of Oak, Hickory, Beech, Poplar, Maple and Sycamore. While placing a premium on safety, agronomic concerns, playability and overall aesthetics, we seek to maintain this history through various means to promote healthy, aesthetically pleasing, specimen trees for years to come. We will accomplish this by the following methods: 1. Class I (aesthetics), Class II (structural integrity & health concerns) & Class III (hazard) prune on a yearly or as needed basis as recommended by our consulting arborist. 2. Remove trees as needed for health reasons or to promote the health of other nearby trees. 3. Maintain lightning protection in our most important specimen trees. 4. Fertilize as needed. 5. Maintain an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in dealing with pests including spraying when only absolutely necessary. Perfection. Transplant out-of-place trees on the course to other, more suitable locations. 7. Plant new specimen trees as needed. Non-native trees and/or ornamental trees will be replaced with more indigenous hardwoods where appropriate. When considering any pruning, removal, new plant ings or transplants the following criteria will be used: (in order of priority) 1. Safety - Any hazard in or around member areas will be either class II or III pruned, removed, staked or wire supported as recommended by our outside arborist. 2. Agronomy - Sunlight, nutrient and water com petition will be considered when turf health is being compromised. 3. Architecture/Playability - In consultation with our golf course architect, how trees affect shot mak ing via overhanging branches, shallow rooting, po- LANGAN tential for double hazards and directional alignment will be considered. 4. Aesthetics - How pleasing in appearance is the tree or proposed planting going to be in the context of a golf course setting. 5. Cost 6. Maintenance - How a tree presents problems with shallow rooting, canopy heights and tree litter, negatively impact on maintenance will be consid ered. Since many of our trees are of an advanced age, we created a tree nursery in the range field in 2008. Seven to ten smaller trees will be planted into the nursery each season in the hopes that we can begin transplanting larger specimen trees onto the course as needed in the future. Decisions about our trees will be made by the Presi dent, Greens and Grounds Chairman, Golf Chairman, Golf Course Superintendent and Golf Professional in consultation with our consulting arborist and golf course architect.” Specializing in irrigation water supply source development, drainage improvements, and diversion permit filings for golf courses. Almost everyone who will read this will be preparing for a successful 2017 and some may have already started working. At that point it may also seem that you don't have the time to think about golf in May. I suggest that it is the best time to do so because you will only get busier and busier, and if you have been to a Classic you know it isn't something that you want to miss. In the last 12 months, The Foundation respond ed to a request from Dr. Clarke concerning the program's need to replace Dr. Steve Hart's position. It looked like it would take at least 2 or 3 years to move forward. Could the Foundation help? Their response was immediate and it was to commit to paying over half of the salary needed to cover a three year period. That can be as much as a $280,000 total commitment. things that the Foundation has done and how it has and will help the turfgrass program. In 2016 we had 368 golfers attend the function at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Bedminster NJ. Since they have 3 courses, the pace of play was excellent and everybody enjoys playing a Scramble. There should be no pressure because you will have partners who will help you enjoy the day no matter if you are a skilled golfer or not. For many of our golfers, this is the only time that they will play in 2017 and they will be back in 2018 to do it all over again. It is a fun day and you know that what you are doing will help you do your job better and more successfully. This is the largest one-day fundraiser for turfgrass research in the world. This may beg the ques tion as to why this is so. There are many reasons. The respect that the industry has for Dr. Bruce Clarke and Dr. Bill Meyer is second to none but that is only the beginning. The list of world class scientists working at The Center For Turfgrass Science is among the best in the world and it will keep getting better. One of the reasons for it to keep getting better (when other programs are getting smaller and losing funding) is the efforts of the industry in conjunction with the help from The Center For Turfgrass Science to address the needs of the turfgrass industry. The Classic raises over $100,000 a year and has been doing so for many years. The event is run by the New Jersey Turfgrass Foundation, and their mission statement states that everything that they raise will go to Rutgers. The Foundation has done just that whenever it has been asked, and much of its funding comes from The Classic. As you are thinking about what I have stated, here are a few The result is that the university moved forward and Dr. Matthew Elmore has been hired and our program has just gotten a lot stronger. We will also be Premier and Dinner Sponsors when the International Turfgrass Research Meeting comes to Rutgers in July 2017. It is a prestigious thing to host these meetings but the cost to do it in a first class way is quite expensive, so those two sponsorships were very important. We are helping with the Steve Hart Pavilion at Adel- phia with a $12,000 commitment along with turf scholarships to Rutgers' students totaling $7,500 each year, and we will support both Turf Bowl Teams at their National Meetings this year. As mentioned, these are just in the last 12 months. Hopefully you will recognize that the reason for giving that data is to show you that even though The Classic has raised over $1.5 million dollars, we don't just raise it. We give it to Rutgers whenever they need help; and we still need you to help by participating and being a sponsor whether it is a Premier Sponsor or a Hole Sponsor or a sponsor or golfer at any level. Donating to The Silent Auction is another good way to help as well as bidding on Silent Auction items. You are helping Rutgers help you. Please make a point to help us by attending the 2017 Rut gers Classic on Monday, May 8, 2017, at Fiddlers Elbow CC. Bill Murray was the driving force behind the event but he had lots of help from Dave Mishkin and John Kirkpatrick. There was no charge for attendees and we had over 50 people enjoying the day. Many came because Harry Harsin's request was that donations in his name should go to the First Tee of Monmouth. The Foundation decided that we would make a substan tial donation in his name and we would guarantee a donation in the amount of $1,000. People brought toys for needy children and Vince Giunco from Vic Gerard Golf Cars brought a couple talented friends and they played a great variety of music during our party. People were actually able to talk without shouting. It was great. Thanks Vince. There however were two gate crashers that we should have thrown out but they were just too big to do so. These were two Sumo Wrestlers and since one was dressed as Santa they were allowed to stay. For some reason I only saw one wrestler, but the folks there told me there were two. It also seems like our members had a great laugh at this unexpected entertainment. I wonder what Bill Murray meant when he said that he didn't think these two guys needed costumes... LOL Don't look for these fellows to make a repeat appearance... 2016 MEMBER OF THE AWARD - by Russ Harris, President It is with great pleasure and privilege that I get to announce that my good friend and colleague Tyler Otero as the GCSANJ Member of the Year for 2016. Tyler came to NJ after growing up in Lewiston, PA, and graduating Penn State University, where he is also currently pursuing his Master's Degree via their World Campus. Tyler has been an integral part of our GCSANJ board for the last 4 years while also serving as a vice president for our association's foundation. He's chaired multiple committees since arriving on board, most recently our Golf Committee. His dedi cation and foresight to bring our events to some of the most prestigious clubs in NJ are what truly led to him being nominated for this award. Tyler, who currently serves as GCS at North Jersey Country Club in Wayne, is always there to make sure the events he's helped planned go off without a hitch and are as enjoyable as they can be for our member ship. From running registration to setting up scoring through the club's pro shops -- these are just some of the things being done behind the scenes that some times most people would never know are occurring. Before becoming GCS at NJCC, Tyler worked at mul tiple Trump properties after graduating from Penn State University. While attending PSU, Tyler worked/ interned all over the country and even international ly. Outside of our industry and association responsi bilities, Tyler, who resides in Little Falls with his wife Meredith and dog Ryelee, enjoys spending time outdoors -- either hunting, fishing or skiing. One of his greatest passions is acquiring new stamps on that passport of his. Either traveling with his wife or friends, Ive never known Tyler to say no to a trip! So for one last time, please join me in congratulating Tyler on this great honor and achievement! When you see him, let him know you appreciate all he does for the association as much as I do. Once again, congratulations my friend. Well deserved!! OTHER FACTS ABOUT TYLER: College: BS in Turfgrass Science from Penn State University; currently pursuing Master's Degree via Penn State World Campus Career influences: Jason Bell (brother in-law and owner of Seven Mountain Sod), Rick Pagett (Super intendent-Penn State Golf Courses), and Greg Nicoll, CGCS (VP-Harrell's) Work History: Spans 16 years in turf industry. Named course superintendent of the Old Course in late 2007. In 2008 became the Golf Course Superintendent of the newly acquired Trump National GC Colts Neck. In 2012, Mr. Trump transferred Tyler to become the Director of Grounds at the Bedminster facility, over seeing both golf courses and the grounds of the en tire facility.
