I guess that that would be an inherent trait for many, but it seems as though that thought gets stronger in me as my age increases. It has never been more evident than the last couple of weeks. For those of you who don't know me that well, I am addicted to competition, especially in sports, on all levels. I have always said I could watch two guys play tiddlywinks if I think they both want to win. These past three weeks my cravings for competition have been fulfilled by my viewings of the NBA Finals, Euro Cup, COPA Cup, and most recently the College World Series. Watching these events made me appreciate the will, determination and skill of some of the greatest athletes of my lifetime. The imagination and grace of Curry, the refuse to lose attitude of James (even though I think Irving was MVP), the skill of Messi, and to top it all off, the beauty of a TEAM no one thought had a chance winning a collegiate national championship. In this day and age, we always hear the arguments how these athletes are not worth the money they are being paid, and my response is always their worth is exactly what someone is willing to pay them. How many people can do what these people can, the answer is quite simply, very few. All this competition got me to thinking this one thought -- how many people have what it takes to be a good superintendent. Think about our state of New Jersey. There are approximately 300 golf course superintendents in our state. I would bet that if someone took a look at how many professional type positions there were in the state, they would find that there are thousands of doctors, thousands of lawyers, thousands of dentists, thousands of company CEO's, thousands of upper level managers either vice presidents or presidents of very large companies, but only 300 golf course superintendents. Keep in mind that number is not growing, in fact it is shrinking and probably won't grow in our lifetime. The value of a good superintendent grows on a daily basis because of this. We as a group should be quite proud of the fact that there are so few people that can do what we do. Although I will admit reluctantly that with the advent of the internet there are a many doctors, lawyers and CEO's that think they can do what we do because they read a certain piece of literature while they were surfing the net. But we know the real truth is they have no idea what it takes to be a good superintendent. The job of being a superintendent is so multi-faceted, and to be good at it requires so many different skill sets, that include but are not limited to, agronomy, finance, electrical, construction, communication, long range planning, management, and even psychology. We as a group need to understand and promote how valuable we are to our respective clubs. We also as a group have an obligation to pass on our skill sets to those we feel have the traits to be a good superintendent to ensure that our positions have value long after we are gone. I cannot stress enough how proud I am to have been lucky enough to be part of this group. Every day my new endeavor has shown me that what we do on a daily basis prepared me for what I am doing today. Don't ever feel like there is not something else out there for us to be successful at. It was about two months into my new job and someone said to me that I need to be careful because I am going to get “burned out”. My reply to them was quick, simple, and said with pride, “you can't burn me out, I was a golf course superintendent for twenty years”. If my life was like a car ride, being a golf course superintendent would now be something that I would see in my rear view mirror, but don't be fooled, much like a car ride when I look in that rear view mirror it would be quite clear that all things being a golf course superintendent in that mirror would be closer than they appear. Yours in the Bond Gary Arlio Gary Arlio GCSANJ President The War At The Shore Moves Inland To Scotland Run GC by Shaun Barry, Director As the 2015 joint PAGCS/GCSANJ Meeting was concluding, Dan Livingston, Mark Beaumont and Rich Sweeney had a conversation about Scotland Run being a potential host for the 2016 edition of this annual meeting. This discussion was inline with the thinking of the GCSANJ's BODs. They want to secure meeting sites as early as possible to help sponsors make long range plans as well as our members. Since that time, Jamie Devers, Tyler Otero and the Golf Committee have even started reaching out to clubs for 2017 and 2018 openings on their schedules. This should increase the number of potential sites because calendars fill up very quickly and we want to be on those calendars. If you would like to host a meeting, reach out to any committee member and let them know about your interest. As you can tell by the title of this article, we did decide on Scotland Run for the 2016 joint meeting. That turned out to be a good decision. 53 people from PAGCS crossed the river for the competition and all got into a match. GCSANJ had 64 attendees. Not every GCSANJ player had a match and unfortunately for Jeremy and Ryan Batz their opponents cancelled at the last minute. Since this was the second year in a row for them to not be involved in a match, I think Jeremy may believe that I don't want him playing a match. The other possibility is perhaps that their opponents cancel when they find out who they have to play against. Neither suggestion is correct though because it really is just the luck of the draw. Hopefully next year is different because I know everybody enjoys the competition no matter what is the outcome of their match. Matt Dobbie and Pat O'Neill lost to John Chassard and Ron Garrison in a very tight match. They however had so much fun they would love to be paired together next year. That sentiment seemed to be the general feeling from everyone that I spoke to. Jamie Devers, Kevin Driscoll, Cece Peabody and Tyler Otero ran the GCSANJ registration while Kristen Liebsch and Rich Sweeney did the same for the PAGCS. Several people arrived just as we were getting ready to start but registration could not have gone any more smoothly. Congratulations to everyone for their efforts. Before everyone headed out to enjoy the golf course Jeff England was acknowledged. Jeff is the superintendent and you could see that he and the course were ready for everyone. We also introduced Lance Ernst and Kevin Monaco who are the principals for Turf Equipment & Supply Co. Their company once again was the Meeting Sponsor for the War At The Shore. I believe that this was their 9th year as sponsors. We also thanked Bayer, (Jeff Weld) DryJect NJ (Dennis Granahan) and SiteOne Landscape Supply (Wayne Remo) for their sponsorship of lunch. Without these sponsors our meetings would look a lot different and they would cost quite a bit more. There were 119 players who signed up to play on this Thursday, April 21st. Kevin Driscoll (working the phone) and I (bad back and bad game) chose to sit on the side lines so only 117 golfers headed out to enjoy the day. This allowed Kevin, Kristen and me the opportunity to greet all of the matches and take some pictures that could be used by both associations. We intended on having the golf shop do the scoring but it turned out that only one person was going to be in the shop at the end of the day. When I suggested that we put up our normal sheets the pro was happy. He said that this would save him 30 minutes and was quite intrigued with our system. It worked well and immediately after golf Jamie, Rich and Tyler pitched in to help record the winners. It was a win/win ending and everybody had time to enjoy their dinner. Before the prize winners were announced, Gary Arlio introduced Jeff England again so he could thank everyone from Scotland Run who helped make this such a good day. Gary also thanked all 8 of the folks from Turf Equipment who played that day for their wonderful sponsorship. Ken Jeinnings & Bill Corcoran from Lawn & Golf covered the cost for the kegs on the course and Rich Sweeney and Mike Janzer from Plant Food were thanked for their generous open bar during the cocktail hour. Completing the list of major sponsors were Rob Johnson and Ralph (new father) Henninger with Fisher & Son for their dinner sponsorship. continued on page 6 The War At The Shore Moves Inland To Scotland Run GC Rob Nolek is the president of PAGCS and he also extended thanks to the sponsors and to everyone who made the trip from both associations for this event. Next year the PAGCS will be the hosts of this joint meeting. The GCSANJ has reached out to a course in PA to see if they would like to host but that decision will be made by Rob and the PAGCS BODs. As soon as they know I am sure they will inform us so this wonderful tradition will continue. Making travel plans can be exciting but it can also be stressful planning the perfect vacation, down to every detail - even though the point of going on a vacation is to relax and have fun! So, keep a few things in mind to make your vacation the most stress-free part of the summer. 1. Know What You Want....Know what you're willing to spend your time and money doing, and with whom. When you know all this, the rest of the planning is easy. 2. Be Organized....Do the proper research to find out everything you'll need for your vacation. 3. Be Prepared....Think ahead and make a list of all the items you'll need ahead of time. There's nothing worse than scrambling the day before your trip to get what you need. 4. Let go of the Small Stuff...Life isn't perfect, so don't sweat the small bumps in the way. Sometimes detours can actually bring the most fun. 5. Be Present... We spend so much time worrying about our vacations being perfect, worrying if everyone is happy and having a good time, that we forget to enjoy the moments. By being present at each moment, you will ensure happiness during your time away. 6. Be Open... Allow yourself to be open to new people, new cultures, and new places. Be open to learning and accepting that life can bring changes when you least expect it. 7. Show Gratitude. How many times have you returned from a vacation saying you really need a vacation? Why not offer gratitude for the time you had away? Being grateful for your time away can make you feel at peace when you return. Wherever you go and whatever you do this summer... enjoy it to the fullest! If you have some tips that work best when you plan your vacation with friends or family, please share. 2016 CALENDAR More Events are being finalized. Check calendar for updates and signup info. WAR AT THE SHORE - April 21, 2016 From Muirfield Village to Ridgewood Country Club -- My Start in the Game by Todd Raisch, CGCS There were many benefits to having a dad who was the school superintendent. Forget your homework, no problem, he has keys to the building. We could use the school gym to shoot hoops whenever we wanted. There might even have been an occasion or two where I ended up with a better grade than I deserved. Then again, there was a downside too. Your friends were always mad at you when he didn't call a snow day. Parent-teacher conferences were a weekly occurrence, not a quarterly event and when you saw him coming down the hallway, you often wondered what some teacher might have said to him. In late May of 1983, I thought the latter may be playing itself out again. I was in 9th grade shop class working on a coffee table when he walked into the classroom and made a beeline towards me. “Oh boy, what have I done now?” As it turned out, he was only there to ask me if I wanted to attend a professional golf tournament. My best friend's dad had invited us to attend with them. My response, was “you mean with Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer?” He said, “I think so”, so I agreed. The tournament was The Memorial at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, and little did I know at the time what a profound impact that invitation would have on my life. We parked on Muirfield Drive along the edge of the course. As we entered the golf course behind the 15th green, I looked down the emerald fairway and across to the par 3 16th hole and I couldn't believe my eyes. I had never seen anything so perfectly manicured and beautiful. We began walking down 16 and I turned to my dad saying, “I have to become a professional golfer.” If you've golfed with me, you know there was never a chance of that happening. That day Hale Irwin edged out Ben Crenshaw for the title and by the time we were headed back to the car I was on a golf high. The next day was Memorial Day and more importantly the day that I took up the game. I grabbed a friend, and my dad's clubs and we went to the local community course, aptly named, Community Golf Course. By the time the same invite came around in 1984, I was addicted. I gave up football to be part of the high school golf team. All the money earned mowing lawns went to greens fees. I devoured every golf magazine I could get my hands on. Golf architecture was my passion. Jack Nicklaus was my idol. Muirfield Village was my nirvana. However, turfgrass management wasn't my choice of studies when college rolled around. I didn't even know such a profession existed, certainly not one where professional studies were necessary. Having seen the movie Wall Street one too many times during my senior year of high school, I set out for a career in finance with hopes of being an investment banker. Like most students, financial reality set in at one point while at Ohio State. I had a flat tire and no money to buy a new one. It was time for a job. I hit the want ads and found a maintenance position at Worthington Hills Country Club, north of Columbus. There I learned all the basics of mowing and raking and met superintendent Marty Szturm, who would later encourage me to change my career path. As an aside to this timeline, during Christmas break of 1990, I visited some friends in northern New Jersey, this being my first ever trip to the metro New York City area. As we were driving down Rt. 17 on our way to New York City, being the map and golf geek that I am, I saw that we were about to pass Ridgewood Country Club. I could see the course through the bare winter trees. In my excitement, I announced to my friends, “Hey, that is Ridgewood Country Club. They hosted the Senior Open this summer where Trevino beat Nicklaus.” They both looked at me Continued on page 14 From Muirfield Village to Ridgewood Country Club -- My Start in the Game After we returned that fall, Bob told me that a 2nd assistant's position was going to open at Ridgewood and that he might be able to get me an interview. He did and the rest is history. That was 21 years ago. A few years after being promoted to superintendent at Ridgewood, things came full circle for me when my chairman and a couple of other members asked be to go on a golf trip with them....to Muirfield Village. On the second morning, I sat down for breakfast with the superintendent, Mike McBride. At the time, he thought it was our first meeting. I knew differently. ...and I thanked him for not hiring me. The Ridgewood Country Club incredulously and replied, “who cares?” Five short years later, I would be travelling up and down that same highway to work at Ridgewood. Back to the bigger story.... the next summer, with a year of experience under my belt, I dreamed of working at Muirfield Village as a summer laborer. Both my brother and I interviewed for positions. Chad was offered a job. I was not. I was crushed, even heartbroken, and returned to Worthington Hills for a second season. As disappointed as I was, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise. That summer, as mentioned earlier, Marty Szturm encouraged me to visit Karl Danneberger, a professor in the Ohio State turfgrass program, about becoming a golf course superintendent. Marty told me I had a great eye for detail and with my love of the game and soon- to-be-earned business degree, I had a good foundation to be successful. I spent a lot of time and my parents' money earning that finance degree, so I continued my business studies and put off any thought of the golf industry until I had a degree in hand. However, the very next day after graduation, without even notifying my parents, I went back in and signed up to study turfgrass management. A return to Worthington Hills also allowed me to meet Bob Carey. You may know him as Big Bob, BBC or just the superintendent at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, New Jersey. We hit it off quickly and later ended up as roommates. He too was embarking on a second go around with school and we spent many a night discussing our future in golf and upcoming internship possibilities. We dreamed of going to places like Pebble Beach, St. Andrews and even stayed up to the middle of the night once so we could call the superintendent at Royal Melbourne in Australia. Ultimately, I ended up at Myopia Hunt Club, north of Boston. Bob ended up at a place called Ridgewood. Several of these companies are not names that most people recognize but each one is a major player in this industry. In the Eagle level of sponsorship, Paige Electric was joined by John Deere Golf/ LaCorte Equipment/ Finch Services. Following with the golf theme we find several Birdie Sponsors. They are AMVAC Chemical Corp, Burlingham Seeds, GCSANJ/ GCSANJ Foundation, NJTA/NJT Foundation, Pennington Seed, and Rutgers, Center For Turfgrass Science. Also falling into the category of a major sponsor is A LIST. They are from the seed industry so Dr. Meyer gets to claim them and since they have been sponsors for the Grand Reception for the second year in a row that is very generous commitment. In addition to this support, my Co-Chairman, Dr. Karen Plumley, informed me that A-LIST wants to do even more next year. They saw 366 golfers from every part of the industry. Teams from the USGA, the Tri-State Turf Research Foundation, the MetGCSA, Baltusrol GC and every major seed and chemical company had representatives in attendance. They know they need to be part of this effort and Karen will work with them to provide them what they need. If you were in attendance, you know the weather looked uncertain. A light mist did fall during registration and although the radar indicated we would be good, I don't think anyone expected us to stay dry all day. It was cloudy and cool all day but we had no rain and we were able to take the carts off the paths. That was really needed or else the rounds would have easily taken an additional 30 minutes. The sun came out during the cocktail reception and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to visit with friends, customers and members of academia. Cece Peabody and her staff organized the Silent Auction even with an additional 15 items from previous years. Darrell Marcinek, Rick Krok, Matt Paulina and Jeff Weld secure the items, Cece arranges them and attendees take advantage of this eclectic group of donations. We set a record this year so thanks to everyone who helped us with their bids. One of the hardest things to do is to keep winning streaks alive. No matter how successful a person or a team or an event is, at some point momentum is lost and success fades. At least that has always been the case with everything and everybody that I have seen. And someday, far in the distant future, the Rutgers Turfgrass Research Classic may no longer be the largest and most successful turfgrass research fundraising golf tournament in the world. If the 2016 Classic results continue however that change in fortunes will not happen in the foreseeable future. It seems that I have been writing about this event's success for a long time. Back when Steve Chirip was the Chairman, we could not get over how many people “needed” to attend. Back then we were filling 2 courses with over 250 people. Dr. Bruce Clarke had support from several companies and we had 5 or 6 Premier Sponsors. Then Dr. Bill Meyer got involved and “The Battle Of The Titans” started. Dr. Meyer wanted to help so he reached out to his contacts in the seed business. Almost immediately we went up to 12 Premier Sponsors and over 300 golfers and we needed 3 golf courses. With the new influx of sponsors someone started keeping track of where those sponsor dollars were coming from. Once you start counting somebody has to be an “official” winner even though in this case the winners are the Center For Turfgrass Science and by extension everyone connected to the turfgrass industry. In 2016 Dr. Clarke garnered his usual support. Included in his supporters we see the two companies that have been Premiers from the start of the Classic. Those companies are Storr Tractor and Syngenta. They have never missed supporting this event. In addition to these companies Bruce also garnered support from his base of consistent supporters. These companies are BASF, Bayer and Grass Roots. Dr. Meyer understands the importance of raising funds for turfgrass research and he has no problem sharing that need to his base. When Bill asks for support people really respond positively. Bill starts asking for support at the GCSAA National Conference. MW1LGG6006-GCSANJ 02/16 Rutgers Golf Classic continued from page 16 While the Silent Auction was shutting down, people were asked to move inside for announcements, thank- yous and awards. In an attempt to shorten this part of the evening, Bruce thanked our major sponsor but I know he would love to thank everyone who was there and those who weren't there. Bruce is a firm believer that we can't thank people enough. He introduced Dean Goodman who spoke briefly before introducing Chancellor Dr. Richard Edwards. Dr. Edwards is the second highest official at Rutgers and it was great that he took some time out of his schedule to play and to stay for the awards. When Dean Goodman spoke again he proudly informed us that Dr. Bingru Huang was offered a continuation of the Geiger Endowed Chair In Turfgrass Science for another 3 years and she accepted. Then he announced that Dr. Meyer had been named to the newly created C. Reed Funk Endowed Faculty Scholar In Plant Biology And Genetics At Rutgers University Chair and he accepted. These are two wonderful people who are worthy recipients of these awards. Just listening to Bill's acceptance of this award was emotional and you could tell the amazing respect that he has for Dr. Funk. Long after the announcements were made and the awards were given, some people wouldn't leave. The pizzas kept coming and the beer was cold and the wine was enjoyed and almost every table had a group of people enjoying the camaraderie and the warm sun. It was a perfect ending for a wonderful day. Before I share the names of the winners, I need to thank all of my committee members who helped in the planning and running of this event along with Cece's staff, Sabrina Tirpak and all of the Rutgers student volunteers who made registration move so smoothly. Getting 366 players through registration is a daunting task but there was never a wait. As usual the folks at Fiddler's Elbow were impressed. We can't thank you enough for your attendance, your support, and your participation throughout the years. See you next year! This year's program saw an overall 13% increase in the number of rounds with over 31% more dollars raised. Along with that, there was a 45% increase in the number of bidders which is also great. Our Chapter also set records with a record number of rounds donated and about $3000 more back to the Chapter. Our income this year from the program was over $8000, which goes directly to our Foundation for scholarships. This all could not be done without the help of all the clubs that stepped up and provided rounds of golf for the public auction. It is a great way for a club or Super to step up and help; in the long run, it does not really cost much for a club to do, but as a group it is huge for the Chapter. Some clubs are looking for members these days, and this is a viable way to get some different people to a club who may be interested in membership or talk to someone who is. When all is said and done it is a win- win for the participating clubs and the Chapter. Please see the list of participating golf clubs on page 23. More Green Means More Green As Golf Has Grown Into a Big-money Business, The Job Of The Golf Course Superintendent Has Gained Importance. [Note:This Article was published on February 17, 1999, and written by Scott Kauffman of The Sentenil Staff.] To the general public, the golf course superintendent is invisible. Superintendents are people rarely seen or heard from at many clubs and courses. They represent a part of golf few understand. Yet, the moment one steps onto a course, the superintendent's world is the first thing noticed. The manicured fairways. The lush greens. Conditions often taken for granted. But that and more is the high-pressured responsibility of the superintendent and crew. Jim Ritts, outgoing commissioner of the LPGA, appreciates the superintendent's place. ''I think the superintendent is to a golf course what a chef is to a great restaurant,'' Ritts said. ''The greatest architect in the world can build a fabulous environment for a restaurant, and you can have the most interesting menu and wine list, but in the end, your experience is defined by the meal. ''And once you step onto the first tee at a facility, the meal is the golf course and the condition that it is in. In the old days of a restaurant, it was the maitre 'd who was the star. Today it's the chef. I'm not so sure down the road the superintendent doesn't have a far more visible role in all of this.'' That is part of the mission David Fearis is undertaking. Fearis, a certified golf course superintendent at Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City, Mo., is the newly elected president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. Last week, his 19,000-member organization gathered for its 70th annual convention in Orlando. ''I think the GCSAA's mission has changed somewhat,'' Fearis said. ''Golf has gotten to be such a big entity. Now, the GCSAA's role has increased because the golf superintendent is a real important asset to the game of golf because people have realized golf is a business. They can make money at golf. So it directly reflects on the condition of the golf course. The business of golf course maintenance and management is bigger than ever. According to a recent report by the GCSAA, that faction of the golf industry totaled $7 billion in 1998. Superintendents are becoming increasingly more educated - 88 percent of all superintendents have some sort of formal college training - and are better compensated. According to the GCSAA, salaries increased 8 percent from 1995-98 from an average of $49,269 to $53,205. If a 1997 survey by Golf Digest is any indication, there is great respect for superintendents from the general public. According to the survey of 500 randomly selected subscribers, 48 percent of the respondents selected the golf course superintendent as the most important person at the club or course - nearly twice as many as the next selection. Still, Fearis and his colleagues realize many people have no clue about their profession. ''It's the old story, how many of the golfing members at a golf facility have ever been in a maintenance facility?'' he said. ''The only time they've ever been in there is when it rains. ... 'Wow, I didn't know you had all this equipment. I didn't realize this and that.' ''One of the great PR tools is [to] put a portable bar down there and have an open house!'' ''It would be great,'' Fearis added with a big smile. ''And you don't think about it. Because it's always tucked in the corner, and you know they always used to refer to it as the baaarrrn. Are you down in the baaarrrrn. Actually, when we answer the phone now, we say Turf Care Center. ''We call it a turf care center, not a barn. There's so many PR things now that you can do.''
