GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS ASSOCIATION OF NEW JERSEY SPECIAL EDITION October 1,1985 Rutgers Stadium and Golf course WELCOME Wayne F. Ballinger, CGCS Field Day Chairman THIS IS THE 21ST year that the Golf Course Superintendents Associa tion of New Jersey has held its Annual Turfgrass, Equipment, Irrigation and Supplies Field Day. After about 10 years this is to be the last year that we will be able to use this location, as a parking lot is to replace the turf in this area. The Field Day is the only fund raising event of our organization. Several of you have been a part of the Field Day every year either as an exhibitor or an attendee. Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned veteran the success of the Field Day and ultimately the success of the superintendents organization depends largely on your support. The fees paid for booths and demonstrations by the exhibitors consti tute the major portion of the income, along with the sale of food and 50-50 tickets. 1984 was my first year as chairman of the Field Day. With the guidance and dedicated efforts of Dr. Henry Indyk, Joe Spang, the Field Day Com mittee and the many other volunteers we had a very successful day. Even though we were forced to make use of the rain date for the first time; with your support as exhibitors and attendees we were able to set records in attendance, exhibitors, and income. Whether we set any new records this year or not, I want to thank every one for your support and efforts. On behalf of the Field Day Committee and all involved I hope you all enjoy and benefit from this 21st Annual Field Day. Henry Indyk Dr. Henry Indyk has been an integral part of the success the GCSANJ Field Day has enjoyed in re cent years. His ability to draw exhibitors to the field day is legendary. The time he spends preparing the site, coordinating logistics with the exhibitors and handling all the small details insures that everything goes smoothly. I know all present and former com mittee members appreciate his efforts and we want everyone else to understand the important role Henry plays in this field day. A job well done! Thurlow Warner Thurlow, Senior Middlesex County Agent, has contributed his oratorial skills each year to the enjoyment of everyone who spent time on the aisles clutching a door prize ticket. He keeps attendees and exhibitors alike entertained with his stories and humorous chatter. He also makes the exhibitors comfortable when it is their time to make their two minute speech. The GCSAN J sincerely appreciates the interest Warner has in our field day and the time he has devoted to it. Students have been graduating Rutgers turfgrass programs for over forty years and now can finally have a say in the turfgrass industry. It all officially began with an organizational meeting at Resorts Inter national on December 4, 1984. With over forty past students present the name of the Rutgers Turfgrass Alumni Association was adopted. Joseph Bianco was voted in as chairman and appointed the following people: Gary Nokes Recording Secretary Joel Jacquemot Membership Chairman Robert Dickison Bylaws Chairman Thomas Ritchie and Allan Walter Public Relations Dr. Ralph Engel Administrative Consultant Some of the goals discussed: 1. Preserve the quality of turfgrass programs at Rutgers. 2. Promote greater interest in turfgrass education. 3. Encourage better financing for turfgrass education. 4. Act as an organized advisory and lobby to the Rutgers Administration and support the needs of students. 5. Support advances in turfgrass science. 6. Act as a liaison to the New Jersey Turfgrass Association and other organized turfgrass interests. 7. Job placement and referrals. 8. Last but far from least, fellowship and camaraderie. We need your participation and support to help build a productive organization. Please help us grow! Since the field day has been held at this site, Joe has been a very hos pitable host through rain and shine. He has stayed late as equipment has arrived the night before; he makes sure that each piece is stored securely and is ready for show the next day. He cooperates with the committee, literally showing them the ropes and helping with the set-up and more im portantly lending a hand with the clean-up. Both are thankless tasks and Joe is eager to help. Through all the demonstrations Joe shows a lot of patience. All the golf equipment demonstrations are held on his golf course. This means that mowers set too low are scalping the turf; that renovation equipment is tearing up the turf; that aerifiers, verti-cutters and mowers are doing their thing on his green. We will be finished soon, Joe. KOONZ WILLIAM F. KOONZ President WILLIAM F. Due to circumstances beyond our control, Willet could not appear in this special edition. We don’t know if it is contractual, but we did hear Willet was seen recently in Lawrence, KS near GCSAA headquarters. We queried our source and were told he is negotiating to appear in future GCSAA tele vision spots. These spots are shown on regional cable stations. Willet is in the option year of his contract; he is obligated for only one more issue and if what we hear is true we may lose him to the GCSAA. We have been trying to reach his agent, Howard Freezer, but he doesn’t return his calls. We may have to go arbitration over this. If it becomes necessary to find a replacement for Willet we have contacted his cousin, Nimble Wilt who is working in Triple A ball right now. Or we could contact the proverbial “player to be named later.” Come back Willet! How important can a field day be? It may mean the difference in making the correct choice when purchasing a major piece of equipment or selecting irri gation equipment or determining what fertilizer or chemical to use. These are not simple choices. In the large rough and fairway unit category there are many selections to choose from. Here you will have the opportunity to inspect, question and view the demonstrations of all the equipment. Usually one has a favorite manu facturer, but don’t be foolish look at all the others. Attendance at this “Field Day” is not only an opportunity to look at all the “iron” but a chance to look at the smaller mowing and utility equipment offered by all manufacturers. It is also a chance to see other turfgrass materials including irrigation supplies. The irrigation suppliers will be displaying the latest “state of the art” equipment in the marketplace. Demonstrations are not available for irrigation equipment, but there is good old fashioned dialogue. Talk to the irrigation reps, irrigation installors and superintendents and learn from their experience. Budget years come and go and you may be thinking about or even preparing next year’s budget. Now is the time to compare fungicides, herbicides, insecti cides, fertilizers and seed types. Talk to the representative; question him about product performance, talk about rates of application, timing of appli cations and learn the workings of each product. Stop at The Greenerside booth (#25) and say hello, we are interested in your ideas and contributions to the newsletter. The Greenerside 9 WATER WATCH Regional Update Number 15 TRENTON, NJ 9/13/85 During this past week, our statewide rainfall deficit held nearly steady at 11.24 inches. Although it would appear to be a picture of somewhat balanced rain fall, that’s far from the case in describing precipitation over the past seven days. The Northeast Region received 3.26 inches of rain, while the Central Region was a distant second with .80 inches. Both regions however, were lucky in comparison with the Western (no measurable rain), Coastal (.13 inches) and Southern (.27 inches) Regions. It’s yet another shift in our rainfall patterns, which continue to change on an almost weekly basis. Our ability to employ water management techniques early in the water emergency has been a key ingredient in stabilizing the situation. Cutbacks in river flow and the interconnections between systems operating in northeast New Jersey have proved to be essential in preventing an even greater emer gency. Another important component in maintaining our water supply during this emergency continues to be the conservation practices of New Jersey resi dents given the dry conditions surrounding us. Water management and con servation efforts can not be under estimated. Although we’re now beginning cooler Fall weather, New Jersey is just coming off some very hot and humid conditions as a last gasp of summer. Al though we would normally expect water use to go up, the effectiveness of conservation once again has proved its worth, as use levels held steady during that time. Here’s a status report on New Jersey’s five water supply regions as of Sep tember 13, 1985: Coastal Just .13 inches of rain fell in the region during the past week, with rainfall deficit since August 1, 1984, standing at 19.55 inches (31.69 inches of rain actually received, versus a normal level of 51.24 inches). Central The Central Region measured near normal rainfall last week with .80 inches falling in the region. The rainfall deficit now stands at 8.20 inches, staying virtually the same. Since August 1, 1984, the region has received 39.00 inches of rain, while 47.20 inches would be the normal. Western Virtually no rain hit the Western part of the state during the last seven days, raising the rainfall deficit to 9.79 inches (40.34 inches of rain re ceived versus a normal level of 50.13 inches). Southern With just over a quarter-inch (.27) of rain this past week, the Southern Region also noted a rise in its rainfall deficit, now measuring 10.63 inches (49.94 inches would be the normal level of rainfall while 39.31 inches have been received in the region since August 1, 1984). Northeast The Northeast Region received rainfall far in excess of normal (3.26 inches) during the past week, much of it coming in late weekend thunder showers that also benefited the New York City reservoirs in the Catskills. The Northeast Region’s reservoirs now stand at 76.8% which is 1.3% above normal for this time of year. With this heavy rain, the Northeast Region once again claimed the distinc tion of having the smallest rainfall deficit, now measuring 8.08 inches (41.62 inches of rainfall having been actually received, versus a normal level of 49.70 inches). Overview We now mark the end of summer on a note of cautious optimism since hopefully we’re nearing an end to the peak periods of summer water use. The residents of New Jersey have cooperated magnificently in helping 10 Field Day to stabilize our water supply situation under some very changeable circum stances, since rainfall patterns con tinue to shift very quickly. We’re cautious because it’s now mid-September with rainfall well below normal for the first half of the month.
