NEWSLETTER Vol. II No. 2 APRIL-MAY 1979 I WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND I see you at the meetings; but you never say hello, You're busy all the time you're there, with those you already know. I sit amongst the members and yet I'm a lonesome guy; The new ones are as strange as I, but you old members pass me by. But darn it, you folks asked us in, and talked of fellowship, You could just step across the room, but you've never made the trip. Why can't you nod and say hello, or stop and shake my hand; then go and sit among your friends; now that I'd . . . understand. I'll be at your next meeting; perhaps a nice time to spend; Do you think you could introduce yourself? I want to be your FRIEND. VOX POP with LEO CLEARY ** The year was 1969 . . . ten years ago this month . . . when a few Golf Course Superintendents, Sod Growers, Nurserymen and others interested in the future of the Turfgrass Industry in our Garden State . . . convened and organized the New Jersey Turfgrass Association. Attending the birth of the new Association that day . . . were the Turfgrass Specialists from Cook College-Rutgers University . . . who had ... for some time . . . been preaching the merits of "unity" within our industry. Ten years is not a long time, but the achievements gained in that period of time should be a cause for celebration during this year of 1979. We should celebrate because the joy of success belongs to not only each and every member . . . but to all of the organizations in the Turfgrass Industry throughout the state as well . . . Because we all pulled together from the onset ... we can be proud of the viable organization we boast membership in today. As we celebrate, let us salute those Officers, Directors, Drs. Engel and NATIONAL IRRIGATION INC. • Johns-Manville/Buckner Irrigation Equipment • Pumps • Controls • Pipe • Fittings • Supplies • Design • Installation • Maintenance • Automatic & Manual Systems BOX 311 • ROOSEVELT, NEW JERSEY 08555 • PHONE 609-448-1125 Don Sauvigne Res. 201-254-8661 Indyk and other members of the Cook College-Rutgers University Staff who have given so unselfishly of their time and energies, over these past ten years, in behalf of our Assciation. By virtue of it's very uniqueness . . . the New Jersey Turfgrass Association, in concert with Cook College-Rutgers University, has "fathered" our Annual Turfgrass EXPO. During the five year period of its existence, registration statistics have indicated an increase from 400 in its first year of introduction as New Jersey Turfgrass Expo '74 to over 1000 for this past years event. "Combining a commercial trade show with educational sessions and conducted in a professional manner it has attracted widespread interest throughout the country. The trade show has provided turfgrass managers an opportunity to stay abreast of new advances in equipment and products essential for effective and efficient management of turfgrass areas". As we continue to celebrate our joint success ... let us be aware of major projects throughout our state that will make demands upon the "green" industry . . . Atlantic City, the rebuilding of the complete downtown area in the city of New Brunswick . . . the new Somerset County Golf Course that is now under construction. These and other projects like them will need our collective expertise. Materials will be needed: seed, fertilizer, equipment, pesticides. The rebuilding of the city of New Brunswick, among other things, involves the building a Center of Art and Science complex. How great it would be ... to have an exhibition of our own Art Form prominently displayed within the confines of that complex. FREE BOOKLET Though we have not reviewed the Booklet "Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Meeting, But Had No One to Ask," it may be worth ordering. Free from Holiday Inns, Inc., the 35 page booklet contains instructions and advice on how to plan, execute and follow through on a successful meeting. Subjects include everything from step- by-step procedures for setting up a meeting to program suggestions for spouses. It's free from: Holiday Inns, Inc. Sales Development Department Memphis, TN 38118 Dr. Indyk once told us about a dream he had ... a dream that presented a Center of Excellence ... a building that we could call our own . . . a place where we would meet as an industry to foster the Art and Science of Turfgrass . . . where research would be conducted; the results of that research to find its way to the golf course, to the Sod Grower, the Sports Arena and to the home owner as well. So, sit back and CELEBRATE the achievements that "unity" within our industry has afforded us over these past ten years. Without the ooperation between the GCSANJ and the NJTA and similar turfgrass groups ... we would still be growing grass with the "wrong side up". ** The author, Leo Cleary, was a pioneer in the effort to cohesify the "green industry". Elected to be the 1st. President of the NJTA in 1960 . . . Leo was later to become recipient to New Jersey's highest single honor ... he was elected to the New Jersey Turfgrass Hall of Fame in 1976. Though officially retired from the industry, Leo continues to promote turf and to inspire those who work with it . RESPONSE The January and February issue of the GCSANJ NEWSLETTER published two articles that questioned the 1978 Board of Directors decision to suspend two of our members for their violations of our code of ethics. As a member of that Board I feel obligated to answer those questions, although my response will be my own opinions and will not necessarily reflect those of the entire Board. DID THE ASSCIATION PROCEED FAIRLY IN MAKING THEIR DECISION AND WAS SERIOUS THOUGHT GIVEN THAT DECISION? The better part of three months were devoted to examining the facts of this matter. The Ethics Chairman, Les Mickins, visited and/or talked by phone with the three members involved and in many instances re-checked dates and information as to deliver the facts accurately. The entire December Board Meeting was devoted to this matter and although all facts showed violations had been committed, the decision reached was not an easy one. I personally feel the strain now placed on the Board for that decision is unjustified. One of the previous articles stated that this situation is not new to our organization and that similar actions were never taken before. This, in fact, is where the real problem lies. As our President, Joe Flaherty, so capably pointed out at our Annual Meeting, without a code of ethics we can have nothing more than a socially oriented group. Trust and cooperation are the collective keys to our success. Without them we can have no direction or goals for which to strive. WILL THE ASSOCIATION INVESTIGATE EACH JOB CHANGE FOR VIOLATIONS? I would hope any and all violations brought to future Board's attention will be examined. If similar measures have to be taken, and are not, then we have been very unfair in this case to all involved parties and to our entire membership. My hope is that future Boards look for ways to strengthen our Association and explore avenues that will minimize these situations. AQUA-GRO Aquatrols Corporation of America 1432 Union Ave., Pennsauken, N.J. 08110 (609)665-1130 As I interpret the By-Laws, a one year suspension is mandatory for such violations. Although I personally encourage the present Board to consider reducing the initial length of suspension. Both of these men have taken an active part in our State Association in the past and may be experiencing unjust pressure due to the publicity this matter has received. I also suggest that periodic contact is made with the suspended members through our Board and every possible step is taken to inform our unemployed constituent of possible job opportunities. DID MOST MEMBERS THINK THE DECISION WAS WRONG? While a few comments made at our Annual Meeting were against the action, most who did mention it to individual Board Members were very positive. Many suggested that if the proper steps were not taken to comply with provisions in our By-Laws they would no longer feel a need to continue membership in our Association. DID THE BOARD MAR THEIR REPUTATIONS WITH THIS DECISION? Definitely not. I feel it only strengthened its position with the membership. A strong Board that acts on the issues when necessary is the backbone of a progressive assocation. It was also suggested that the Board be held responsible for the individual members understanding of the Code of Ethics and that it was in fact our fault this situation even occurred. This suggestion is preposterous. Each member is supplied with a copy of the Code of Ethics in their By-Laws. It is their responsibility to read and understand them. If there is any question regarding this code they can be brought to the Board's or District's attention for explanation. In closing I would like to thank Jim Gilligan and Harvey Dreibelbis for their interest and concern in this matter. It is with this type of action that interest is developed, questions are answered and changes are made. Dear Editor: I feel the Officers and Board of Directors should be commended for their handling of a recent code of ethics violation which necessitated the suspension of two of our members. Some might say they were to harsh — not so. For this is a problem which has haunted our association for years and this time it was not swept under the carpet. I am well aware we cannot control clubs hiring practices, but if we control our members actions, it should eventually have an affect on the clubs attitude toward hiring. Some might plead ignorance but there is always a code of ethics to be reckoned with in any association. Further, some actions should not have to be curtailed by laws but by common decency.
