UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION GREEN SECTION Issued By The ROOM 307. SOUTH BUILDING PLANT INDUSTRY STATION BELTSVILLE, MD. SOUND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE BASED ON RESEARCH DATA CORRECTLY INTERPRETED GREEN SECTION PROGRAM: At the end of World War II the supply of men trained in turf work was critical. Research had fallen behind and many turf gardens had been abandoned. To train men and to gather data simultaneously and to bring members a better type of service, the Green Section set out to sponsor a decentralized cooperative national program of research and education in key centers over the country. Funds for this purpose were low because of enforced inactivity in USGA functions. In 1946 the USGA Executive Com mittee approved a plan for Green Section Subscriptions to create an Educational Fund which would be .used to establish research grants and research fellowships in turf at selected experiment stations. By November 30, 1947, the Education Fund amounted to $5,605.18, and it is still growing. The sum of $2,600 from the Education Fund has been expended to date. Research grants have been established in Florida and Texas. Research fellowships are in effect at Pennsylvania, Purdue, and Michigan, and they are being planned for Georgia and Oklahoma. Other allocations will be made as favorable circumstances are demonstrated and as funds are available. The Green Section budget has been drawn upon to the amount of $2,150 for 1946 and 1947 to initiate and to support certain phases of turf work at Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Voluntary contributions in the amount of $10,759.68, most of which is earmarked for use in specific areas, are available to the Green Section program, effectively sup plementing the Education Fund. Some of the figures represent the first of five annual instalments. The money usually is used for labor and .equipment. Data from the work done are made available to the Green Section which are then published for the benefit of all members and subscribers. Green Section research grants vary from $200 to $500 and are renewable annually. A Turf Research Fellowship is a position created at an experiment station by a grant of money sufficient to finance the post-graduate work of a student interested in turf. The work of the student must be guided by qualified station personnel. The problem is selected jointly and, upon publication, the results of the work are made December, 1947 Timely Turf Topics, 1. available to members and subscribers. Green Section fellowships have been set up on the basis of SI,500 a year for 3 years. Upon the completion of the fellowship, the student is granted a degree and then he may enter the work of his choice. Problems being studied under the Green Section program include Fairway management Disease control Weed control Better tee grasses Control of Bermuda grass Better strains of Bermuda grass Better grasses for roughs Better grasses for fairways Aeration of soils under turf Seed mixtures Development of supplies Development of supplies of centipede grass seed of Zoysia grass seed. Results of this expanded program are just beginning to become evident. Prog ress may seem slow but time is required to develop sound data. The decentralized co operative program in progress will continue to yield data for years to come which will be of inestimable value to all who seek ways and means of producing Better Turf.
