My name is Ayesha Ghazi. I'm an Asian American activist who lives and works in Detroit, and I'm passionate about fighting discrimination. I think that my childhood had a lot to do with why I decided to become an advocate; from seeing global poverty in India, to growing up in a family that was reconstituted and seeing the strife that existed between two different religions. Now more than ever, as a mother with a three-month old son, I feel and I see the importance of collaboration across different aisles, among different people. My hopes and dreams for the future are that we all advocate with one another, on each other's behalf, no matter who is the victim, no matter who is being victimized. I hope that Asian Americans, I hope that Indian Americans specifically, get involved in that fight and they aren’t staying away from Detroit because they’re ‘scared of it’. I hope they come here not to just shop, in the brightly lit Downtown area, but they come and they see the neighborhoods and they meet the people. The values that bring us all together are understanding the strength and uniqueness that exists in our diversity. That we exist as a kaleidoscope of different people, of different strata’s of society, but together, when we have different people in the room, we come up with better solutions and better ideas.
