Self-advocacy is the ability to effectively support one’s own rights. If individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are not provided with specific training regarding their rights, they may not be able to effectively advocate for themselves. Self-advocacy consists of four specific components, including: 1) Knowledge of Self; 2) Knowledge of Rights; 3) Communication; and 4) Leadership. Limited self-advocacy research has focused on Knowledge of Rights and developing teaching procedures to educate individuals with IDD on their disability rights. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a self-advocacy training designed to teach disability rights in an employment setting. Using a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants, 9 students with IDD participated in a video-based behavior skills training to learn their disability Accommodation Rights. Prior to intervention, participants displayed variable knowledge of disability rights as evidenced by performance on a video assessment of scenarios of rights violations and non-violations. Following intervention, 8 of the 9 participants increased correct responding on the video assessment. Six participants required additional supports (e.g., feedback and/or booster sessions) to enhance accuracy, while 1 participant was excluded from the study. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Show moreBlast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a widespread pathology and one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity among military personnel. Exploring the mechanics of brain tissue is critical to predicting intracranial brain deformation and injuries resulting from severe blast loading. The research reported in this dissertation is aimed at investigating three aspects of bTBI research: (1) to build a numerical method with the ability to capture the complex deformation induced by blast loading of the human brain, and (2) to investigate the effects of morphological and volumetric differences on human brain dynamics under blast loading, and (3) to determine residual stresses resulting from cortical folding during brain growth via simulations of volumetric tissue expansion.Although shear stress, cavitation, and severe pressure gradients are suspected to induce brain injury, the details of the ensuing neuropathological consequences are largely unknown. Recent advances in computational tools allow exploring neuropathological damages occurring in human brain tissue resulting from exogenous mechanical forces that are present during bTBI. In this computational study, the numerical model is developed by using explicit nonlinear dynamic code LS-Dyna using Multi-Material Arbitrary Lagrange Eulerian formulation. In addition, this report includes a finite element analysis implemented with ABAQUS to predict the emerging morphological patterns and residual stresses of a developing brain as a result of cortical folding. One aim of the systematic approach presented in this research is to develop computational procedures that can assist in obtaining a prognosis and choosing adequate neurosurgical procedures before a physical intervention is needed.

"Copper is sequestered in liver of all animals, and particularly so in ruminants, as an apparent reserve supply to provide for nutritional needs during times of insufficient dietary intake. Copper has poor dietary bioavailability in cattle and therefore copper is often supplemented in the diets of dairy cattle and over-supplementation can occur. Copper has poor dietary bioavailability in cattle and therefore copper is often supplemented in the diets of dairy cattle and over-supplementation can occur. Excessive hepatic copper accumulation in dairy cattle has been of growing concern in recent years. Despite this, the impact of elevated copper concentrations on bovine hepatocytes, short of fulminant toxicosis, is still not well understood. The overarching goal of this research is to provide veterinarians and nutritionists with a better interpretation of liver copper concentrations and their relevance to animal health, especially when they are above expected reference values but below fulminant toxic concentrations. The direct aim of this study is to determine the association between hepatic copper concentrations and biomarkers for subclinical hepatocellular damage in dairy cattle. Hepatocellular damage will be assessed by histological analysis, measurement of liver leakage enzymes in serum, and systemic and hepatic markers of oxidative stress. If such an association is found, it will suggest that super-nutritional, but sub-toxic hepatic copper concentrations may be a risk factor for disease in dairy cattle"--Page ii.

Many researchers have explored environmentally-friendly advertising; observing its effects on purchasing behaviors and intentions (Davis, 1993; Tucker, Rifon, Lee, & Reece, 2012; Xue & Muralidharan, 2015; Marie-Cecile Cervellon, 2012) as well as co-branding as a tactic for encouraging consumers to purchase products as well (Park, Jun, & Shocker, 1996; Helmig et al., 2008; Norris, 1992; Charry & Demoulin, 2014; Khun et al., 2008). Furthermore, co-branding is an increasingly popular tactic, yet little research has been conducted in relation to how co-branding and green marketing can work in tandem. As a result, this study merges these two advertising tactics by exploring key concepts such as product/brand fit. This is done so by investigating the level of congruence between a fictitious, environmentally-friendly host brand and several differentiating, high equity partner brands. The study employs an experiment to investigate the effects of co-branding (present vs. absent) and the level of congruence (high vs. medium vs. low) on purchase intentions (PI), attitudes toward the ad (Aad), and attitudes toward the brand (AB); building on the Theory of Congruence. The results indicate that, with co-branding, when comparing a co-branded ad to a single-branded ad, there are no significant differences between the participants' attitudes towards the ad or brand, their intent to purchase the host brand's product, or their attitudes towards any given, presented ad. Similarly, when addressing congruence, the level of congruous match has no significant difference on participants' attitudes towards the host brand or their intentions to purchase it. Limitations and areas for future research are also provided.

To explore how taboo topics may intrude on positive employee relationships, I consider its potential to impact helping behaviors in the workplace. An online between-subjects experiment manipulates motivation to be authentic or impression manage and a topic of discussion with a coworker to be taboo (e.g. abortion) or neutral (e.g. fitness). I evaluated participants' perceptions of their own motivation, participant's perceptions of their behavior during the interaction as authentic or impression management, and helping behaviors following the interaction. Results showed that motivation, but not taboo topics, influenced perceptions of behavior during the interaction. Further, taboo topics and the behavior during the interaction did not influence subsequent helping behaviors. However, exploratory results showed that taboo topics did impact affect towards the coworker that brought up the taboo topic. Limitations, implications for theory and practice, and future research directions are discussed."--Abstract.
