Show moreThe use of shielded, or debonded, strands is an effective technique to reduce high tensile stresses in the end region of prestressed concrete members. However, damage in the ends of prestressed beams with shielded strands has been increasingly experienced during strand detensioning. Guidelines on the use of debonded strands, such as the AASHTO Specifications are mainly related to shear strength of pre-tensioned concrete elements with only minimal guidance for issues related to possible early damage during production. The bond behavior of shielded 0.6 in. (15.2 mm) diameter strand was evaluated by conducting experimental studies on unstressed (pull-out tests) and stressed (pretensioned beams) tests. The strands were debonded using single and double layer flexible-slit (tight fit) sheathing and their performance was compared to fully-bonded strand. Experimentally calibrated finite element models were then developed to numerically simulate bond behavior of shielded strand and assessed the induce stress state in the concrete element. A surface-contact interaction model was used to simulate load-transfer from the pre-tensioned strand to the concrete by calibrating the coefficient of friction defining the nonlinear tangential response. The effect of partial strand debonding on the anchorage zone of bridge girders was studied through numerical simulations within the context skew U-beam case study for which evidence of damage exists. The type of sheathing, flexible or rigid, and the effect of staggered distribution for debonded strands were the studied variables. Pull-out test results showed no evidence of residual bond on singular or doubly sheathed strand. However, small-scale beam tests showed that strand debonded with flexible split sheathing leads to high radial stresses along the debonded length in the concrete due to strand dilation from Poisson's effect. Such dilation also leads to the transmission of axial stresses due to a wedging mechanism. The use of rigid oversized sheathing was shown to decrease stresses in the transfer region and along the unbonded length. A staggered distribution of the debonded strands can reduce longitudinal shear stresses created by the uneven distribution of prestress forces in the beam-cross section. Thus, the use of rigid sheathing and a staggered arrangement distribution for debonded strands is recommended when the efficacy of debonding becomes essential.

The conventional methods of measuring density of populations in cities rely on calculations of quantities of people living within a surface boundary and fail to account for the multiple floor residential patterns of the contemporary urban landscape. Conventional population density measurements do not characterize the crowdedness or spaciousness of the lived experience of people within cities. To create an accurate representation of people in contemporary urban spaces, a move beyond the conventional conception of density is needed. This research aims to find a more appropriate solution to mapping humans in cities by employing a dasymetric method to represent the distribution of people in a city of vertical residential structures."--From abstract.

Show moreLargemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) are among the most popular game fish in North America. Bass are also recognized as a keystone species because of their ecological impact on the systems they inhabit. Angling during the spring reproductive period of largemouth bass is controversial because of fears of potential negative population level impacts. However the relative influence of angling versus natural features on male reproductive success and recruitment are not fully understood. Relevant ecological questions about largemouth bass mating behavior such as the number of individuals that contribute to recruitment, and patterns of YOY dispersal also remain, and are important for management because they could mediate angling effects on bass reproduction. We integrated field observations, experimental angling and genetic techniques to assess the relative effects of angling and natural features on male success, document mating behavior and explore YOY dispersal. Analysis revealed that natural features of male nests were more important than angling to a males contribution to recruitment, however nests receiving experimental angling produced roughly 3x fewer YOY than control nests. On average 3.4 females contributed to individual nests in Warner Lake, and 51% of nests had evidence of cuckoldry. Less than 10% of the adult population contributed to recruitment in any one year in either lake. YOY bass dispersed on average 300 m from their nest of origin, and related YOY were no closer together on average than randomly selected YOY bass. Ultimately habitat features may be more important than angling for YOY recruitment and substantial inter-population differences in mating behavior may exist.

First-year graduate students in a large university were surveyed about their past advice receiving experience (N = 128), which began with one of the three types of initial interaction: (a) when advice was wanted and solicited; (b) when advice was wanted but unsolicited; and (c) when advice was unwanted and unsolicited. The quantitative data results showed that the recipient felt significantly less positive face threat in the wanted but unsolicited interaction, and felt significantly greater negative face threat when advice was unwanted and unsolicited. Also, it was found that only perceived negative face threat served the mediating role between the type of initial interaction and the evaluation of advice helpfulness. The qualitative data suggested that graduate students do not like asking for advice from another person due to positive face threat-related concerns and that they tend to seek advice from an advice giver who seemed to feel less negative face threat upon their request. The importance of the distinction between psychological want for advice and discursive solicitation of advice and refining the measurement of face threat were highlighted in the discussion for future research.

Show moreEvolution is surrounded by controversy, and studies show that opposition to evolutionary concepts begins in childhood (Branch and Scott, 2008). Throughout their formative years, children compile many misconceptions surrounding this topic, which directly influences their views on science and their willingness to learn about evolution. So the issue at hand is not just what we teach students regarding evolutionary biology, but also how we teach them. Students in this study were taught evolutionary concepts in a hands-on, activity based style of learning. They worked individually and within large and small groups. According to a one-tailed paired t-test, the results show that this hands-on approach is a significant way to increase both student interest and knowledge of the content.

Show moreA wearable patch antenna is investigated in this thesis. In particular, a patch antenna that can be borne on a human head is investigated by assessing its performance in free space and in proximity to a human head. The antenna is a self-structuring patch antenna placed conformal with a curved surface. An integral part of the antenna system is a set of switches connected from the patch surface to the ground plane. Changes in the electrical shape of the antenna can be achieved by changing the switch configurations. This allows for effective use of the antenna even in the vicinity of the human body despite the resulting coupling effects.Simulations were carried out on the antenna in free space between 1 GHz and 2 GHz. Furthermore, simulations were run with the antenna in proximity to a human head model over the same frequency range. A genetic algorithm is used to search effectively through the large number of switch states for antenna configurations with desirable performance. Measurements that were carried out on a fabricated prototype antenna are presented. Experiments were performed with the antenna in free space. Random search measurements were undertaken to gain a general sense of the impedance distribution of the antenna states. Finally, targeted genetic-algorithm based optimizations were carried out at specific frequencies.
