Two box cars broke loose from the freight train Friday morning while the train was climbing the grade to the summit. They came into the railway yard with terrible velocity, struck a car loaded with oats standing on the track, knocked it into splinters and scattered the oats to the four winds of heaven.

An accident occurred upon the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Trout Lake Station, on the 25th day of September 1887m at 330 o'clock A.M. caused by: A train of ore cars breaking in two parts about 3/4 of a mile west of Trout Lake crossing, the forward portion of train, engine and 35 cars ore camd down grade without being properly controlled, the brakeman being afraid the rear portion would run into them, did not make much effort as he would otherwise have done. Show moreAn accident occurred upon the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Trout Lake Station, on the 25th day of September 1887m at 330 o'clock A.M. caused by: A train of ore cars breaking in two parts about 3/4 of a mile west of Trout Lake crossing, the forward portion of train, engine and 35 cars ore camd down grade without being properly controlled, the brakeman being afraid the rear portion would run into them, did not make much effort as he would otherwise have done. Engine and cars ran the crossing of the M.S. st. M&A at Trout Lake without stopping and soon after struck rear end of a preceeding ore train taking water at the tank house. Caboose and 3 cars of forward train and 13 cars of latter with engine and tender derailed. No person hurt, track blocked 30 hours. Had to transfer passengers. Casualties resulting from the above accident None.

Mr. Shcaffer is a man of considerable experience in railroad matters, having been agent at Humbolt for some time past, where he earned the reputation of being a careful, competent and obliging offical.

Duluth will not get the DSS&A this year. The road at present is at Dogwood or rather just west of there and north of Watersmeet. In conversation with one of the men whose business it is was to travel along the line, it was learned that the road bed was finished, and all that was needed to complete the road was the laying of rails and building of a few bridges.

Mrs. Mary Kearney, age 31 years, wife of Frank Kearney died at her home, 341 Genessee street, south Marquette, at 9:00am, Monday after a brief illness. Mr. Kearney is a passnger conductor on the DSS&A, and has four little children left motherless by the death of his wife.
