Accident occurred upon the DSS&A Railroad near Ishpeming, on the 30th day of May 1887, 345 o'clcok, pm, caused by: Train breaking in two. (coupling pin broke). Engineman, Samuel Wilkes, who had been to the telegraph office, on coming out, in place of going to his engine, signalled the fireman to go ahead, which he did. Wilkes jumped on an ore car about 30 cars from the engine and was going forward toward walking over the top of the ore cars when train parted, just as he was passing between...

Engineman, Samuel Wilkes, who had been to the telegraph office, on coming out, in place of going to his engine, signalled the fireman to go ahead, which he did. Wilkes jumped on an ore car about 30 cars from the engine and was going forward toward walking over the top of the ore cars when train parted, just as he was passing between the cars. He fell to the ground, and was run over by 13 cars. Right arm taken off close to the shoulder, head badly cut, besides internal injuries. He died at 4 am on the 31st of May. The family did not desire an inquest, and the Railroad Company did not insist on it. Casualties; one employee killed.

Mr. C. G. Annesley of Detroit, Michigan a representative of the Brush Electric Light Co., is in the city to overhaul the dynamo and plant belonging to the DSS&A. The M&W used the light for one season only and the plant has since been idle, but it is intended now to overhaul it and operate it to full capacity, 17 lights. These will be placed mainly on No 1 and No3 ore piers while a pole at the junction of Front and Superior streets will light the tracks there and the depot platforms. The...

An accident occurred upon the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Ishpeming on the 17th day of December 1887 at 930 o'clock A.M. caused by: Richard Nugent, breakeman with switch engine in Ishpeming yard losing a portion of middle finger on right hand. He was pulling pin between engine and ore car no 992, when engine slacked back; his finger caught betwen pin and dead wood taking off a portion. He was off work 3 weeks, but is again on duty.
