In this study, I examine how three African American girls who participated in a multi-cultural after school book club make sense of race and gender as they read versions of the Cinderella story in which the Cinderella character is Black . Analysis of data from interviews and book club discussions suggests that adolescent African American females expand their repertoire of female gender roles when exposed to Pan-African Cinderella's by taking up the texts in ways that both challenge and...

Analysis of data from interviews and book club discussions suggests that adolescent African American females expand their repertoire of female gender roles when exposed to Pan-African Cinderella's by taking up the texts in ways that both challenge and reinforce family-based female gender roles. I explore the implications of these findings for our understanding of the reading experiences of urban African-American female adolescents.

Here, the “natural hair movement” is the recent trend of Blackwomen consciously ending the habitual chemical straightening/ processing of their natural hairtexture. The study is guided by the following research questions: 1) To what extent does the“natural hair movement” participate in/ endorse Eurocentric standards of beauty? 2) How areBlack women utilizing the natural hair movement to (re)define, (re)shape, and (de/re)constructmeanings of beauty and Black womanhood? Utilizing theories of beauty culture/ standards ofbeauty and Black feminism, this study explores these research questions by way of discourseanalysis. The subjects of this study consisted of four internet-based natural hair care spaces: 1)The official website of Carol’s Daughter brand natural hair care products 2) CurlyNikki.com, theworld’s most popular natural hair blog (Walton) 3) Popular video blogger Naptural85’s YouTubechannel and 4) A Twitter and Tumblr page within the 4C hair type sub-grouping. The languageand images within these spaces were sorted and analyzed, to reveal patterns surrounding theways that beauty is theorized within the natural hair community, via discussions of naturalhairstyles, lengths, and textures. Ultimately, the study suggests the natural hair movement is aspace where negotiations of identity are occurring, as Black women have created their own spaceto (re)shape meanings of Black female beauty, while at times influenced by deeply embeddedEurocentric standards of beauty.

Show moreWilliam James describes in his Principles of Psychology the central role that habits and adaptation plays in the human experience. Habits affect an individual’s beliefs, actions, and emotions, and without habits an individual would not have any personality. In the nineteenth century, literary theorists such as Henry James describe the necessity for authors to create realistic characters and events. This thesis displays the intersection of these two intellectual movements in Jack London’s dystopian novel, The Iron Heel. I begin by examining the history of the theory of habits beginning with John Locke and ending with James’s own works on the subject. I then focus on literary theory and the ways it is conducive to the absorption of habit theory into the creation of realistic literary characters. I argue that novels that do this are “psychoepisodic,” or novels containing psychologically realistic characters that describes a piece of the psychological side of the human experience through various episodes. Finally, I use these theories to examine London’s The Iron Heel and the ways London uses habits in the development of the characters.

Show more"This exploratory study examines the construct of the lowrider car as part of a barrio aesthetic of U.S. Chicanas and Chicanos, and this material component of the culture is equally part of the social identity of this cultural community of United States. Within Chicana/o communities, lowrider cars are built and designed as symbolic meaning [systems] within the sub-populations of U.S. Chicana/o citizens. This is especially true for those who participate in the ritual of displaying their vehicle creations. In order to participate in the ritual of riding in cars or bicycles that have been re-configured to conform to lowriding culture and ridden in appropriate public events and locations, requires full knowledge of particulars and parameters of Chicano/a culture and the lowriding component thereof. Nevertheless, not everyone subscribes to this expressive cultural behavior as not everyone engages in the lowriding ritual and/or embraced this type of modified car as a symbol of Chicana/o culture. This paper reports on some ten (10) individual interviews conducted with Chicanas/os who have built lowriding cars. In addition, this research included systematic observations of two car shows and a content analysis of popular media. The research findings suggest three appropriate and salient themes: A Socialized Practice, an Aesthetic Identity, and Representation of Aesthetics. I give these the respective names; 'I Just Grew-Up with It,' 'It's Part of My Culture,' and 'I'm Mexicano Regardless.'"--Page ii.

"Henry Playford's two-book anthology of sacred song, Harmonia Sacra (London: 1688, 1693), is as much a songbook of erotic love as it is a hymnbook of religious devotion. To clarify an early modern conception of embodied devotion in England, I explore two songs from the collection with an eye to the erotic, the carnal, and the material... " -- Abstract.

Lawsuits over sampling in rap music forced producers to rethink the ways they made music while crack cocaine and the War on Drugs wreaked havoc in urban communities across the nation, as it did in the Clan's home borough of Staten Island, New York. Before the formation of the group, Gary "GZA" Grice, had managed to land a recording contract as a solo artist, but his marketing was mismanaged and his career stagnated. He returned in 1992 as one of the nine member collective, who billed themselves as kung fu movie buffs melding low-fi, eerie productions with realistic raps about ghetto life. Drawing from the vibrant underground rap scene of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s, Brooklyn's rich African American chess tradition, the teachings of the Five Percenters, and the cult following for Hong Kong action cinema, the Clan became a huge hit across the country. Each member fashioned a unique masculine identity for himself, bolstering their hardcore underground image while pushing the boundaries of acceptable expressions of manhood in rap music. Their avant-garde approach and business acumen turned the group into `underground superstars' who sold millions of records worldwide. Despite their success as a multinational corporation, the Clan still managed to maintain their authentic image as underground devotees from the tough streets of Staten Island.

Identity foreclosure (high commitment to an ideology or vocation with little exploration of other roles and options) has been shown to have a negative relationship with career transition. This study investigated the identity status of former Division I football players and its relationship salient psychosocial factors (athletic identity, stereotype threat, and social support). A concurrent embedded mixed methods design was used with priority given to the qualitative data. Using Marcia's (1966) identity development theory and the scoring guide of Marcia and Archer (1993), this study also ascertained the current identity status of the participants and examined their career transition out of sport. Six former Division I athletes from the university were recruited. It was found that social support had a strong relationship with identity status. Those in Identity Achievement (high commitment/presence of exploration) had the smoothest transition, while those in Moratorium (low commitment/high exploration) had a more challenging path. Those in Diffusion (low commitment/low exploration) experienced a passive transition out of sport. Management styles of role conflict had a strong relationship with identity status, and lastly, stereotype threat had a small relationship with role conflict by means of attachment to athletic identity."--Page ii.

In the introduction to her 1984 biography entitled Ivy: The Life of I. Compton-Burnett, Hilary Spurling marvels that twentieth century readers attributed "the last word in modernity" to her novels. However, Compton-Burnett's works have remained largely neglected by criticism within the field of modernist studies. Through the examination of four novels: A House and its Head (1935); Elders and Betters (1944); Mother and Son (1955); and A God and His Gifts (1963), I will chart the way Compton-Burnett's treatment of incestuous relationships and employment of camp humor function as a revelatory queer and feminist critique of the patriarchal family. Her novels illustrate the strange ways individuals operate within the repressive confines of the family system, revealing the ultimate failure of heteronormative and traditional modes of structuring the family unit. Through my work on her novels I hope to elucidate how serious contemplation of forgotten queer and female writers in modernism helps us see alternative ways of resistance and political writing apart from the violent revolt from the past that high modernists propagate."--Page ii.
