Millions of people visit zoos on an annual basis but we know very little about zoo visitor satisfaction with animal visibility; a lack of animal visibility may negatively impact a zoo visit. This study attempts to determine the overall satisfaction of zoo visitors, their satisfaction with animal visibility, and how important they consider animal welfare and animal visibility. Show moreMillions of people visit zoos on an annual basis but we know very little about zoo visitor satisfaction with animal visibility; a lack of animal visibility may negatively impact a zoo visit. This study attempts to determine the overall satisfaction of zoo visitors, their satisfaction with animal visibility, and how important they consider animal welfare and animal visibility. Also, this study examines how often visitors expect the animals to be visible. Finally, wildlife tourists and their satisfaction with animal visibility in the wild is compared to a zoo setting. These questions will be analyzed between an array of demographic groups treated as the dependent variables (men vs. women, zoo members vs. non members, age, income, presence of children, weekday vs. weekend visitors, education level) or other visitor features (if they feel the zoo is a good value, feel animals need a hiding place out of view of the zoo visitors, visit frequency). Nearly 500 zoo visitors at two zoos completed an exit survey. T-tests were used to find statistical significance. The results show that most zoo visitors are very satisfied with their zoo experience but there were some statistically significant differences found. Overall, the value of the zoo, zoo membership, and visit frequency were found to have significant differences in some of the survey questions. Wildlife tourists were found to have higher expectations of visibility in a captive setting. The results differed between the two zoos which could be due to the features of each zoo, unique visitor experiences, or even outside factors such as mood. Overall, zoo administrators can learn more about visitor satisfaction and expectations about their visit from this type of research to ensure a positive experience for their visitors and welfare for the animals.

Show moreThis study reports the findings of a research project on Zimbabwean infant teachers' perceptions of the curriculum for children in grades one, two and three. There was general consensus among infant teachers on what they believed to be the three most important subjects on their curriculum. A notable result of the study was that the subjects that children enjoy learning most are regarded as being the least important by their teachers. These subjects are allocated less teaching time than certain other subjects and teachers rarely keep records of children's progress in them. The study concludes that Zimbabwean infant teachers have been poorly socialized into the nature and purpose of children's curricula, and recommends that teacher training programmes for infant teachers be revised accordingly in this aspect.

Show moreThe paper presents the results of a study undertaken in Zimbabwe which set out to document the experiences, attitudes and needs of families as they face the responsibility of caring for persons with mental illness. The basic aim of the study was to paint a "broad brush" picture of the service needs of both mentally ill persons and their families and to determine under what burdens, if any, families labour as caretakers. The study involved families of patients whose illnesses were distinguished as or closely resembled schizophrenia or major affective disorders. Altogether no fewer than 34 interviews were conducted in various parts of Zimbabwe. A fundamental conclusion of the study is that families continue to bear a heavy responsibility for providing assistance to persons with mental illness, and hence require a great deal more support, education and additional services from government, NGOs and the wider community to help them successfully assist in caring for their family members.
