On Tuesday the first train over the Duluth & Iron Range railorad entered Duluth. This line connects the Vermillion ore fields with what will be the terminus of the DSS&A, and will make easy communication between the ore fields of the Upper Peninsula and the new fields.

An accident occurred upon the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Seney station on the 2nd day of September 1887 at 800 o'clock a.m. caused by: Brakeman C. D. Formby falling off train of ore cars while in motion, a short distance west of Seney station. No one saw him fall, he was found by the trackmen. Head injured and one leg run over; brought him to the hosptial at Marquette, where he died the next day at 1:30pm. Remains sent to his relatives at Hamilton Ontario. Casulaties...

Soo bridge is being built by four railraods in conjuntion with the GT, CPR, DSS&A, and the MSSM&A. The contracts have all been awarded. The contract for the entire substructure has been let to the well known bridge builder, J. Reid. The high price of iron and steel in the United States sustained by the protective tariff, compared with the low price in Canada of improted British metal, enabled the Dominion Bridge Company, whose's workers are at Lachine, Que., to so far underbid all american...

A special to the Mining Journal this morning accounces that the MSS&A has reached S.S. Marie. This is the third railway line to reach St. Mary's River this year, two from the American and one from the Canadian side, a fact that will make 1887 quite a memborable year for the communities on both sides of that historic stream and yet people who are so impressed with the magnitude of their destiny that they don't seem to mind it much.

The iron bridge taken down here is to be used at Dogwood, on the western extension of the DSS&A to which place is already has been taken. The DSS&A pay-car passed over this division of the orad yesterday, distributing the September pay of the employees. A brakeman named James watson got his head badly squeezed at Humboldt last Friday while coupling cars.

An accident occurred on the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Negaunee station on the 21st day of July 1887 at 450 o'clock P.M. caused by: Way freight train east bound failing to stop (as required by law) 200 feet short of the crossing of the Chicago and North Western Railway, whereby they struck the cars of a C&NW train passing the crossing westbound, throwing 4 empty ore cars off the track but doing very little damage, trains being almost at a stand. Engine stood on the crossing when it stopped. Trainmen seem to have used poor judgement in not checking speed of train and getting it under control in time to stop short of crossing. All hands, engineman, fireman, counductor and 3 brakemen, have been dismissed from the company's service. Casualties None.
