Show moreSocial workers' associations have been formed in many countries around the world to benefit and support their members – i.e. professionally trained and qualified social workers. Their mandate is to provide the necessary professional expertise and networking capability to assist in building and develop their members' skill base and to protect and strengthen the profession generally. As social work is very closely linked to social development in the developing world, social workers also have an important societal and national role to play in this respect However, one of the critical problems facing the rather weak social workers' associations within Africa, is how they can sustain the interest of their members and build their organisational base in such a way that they can contribute in a positive way to social development. This article examines the situation of the National Association of Social Workers (Zimbabwe) and outlines an organisational development strategy which aims to mobilise and educate members of the Association in order to bring them more fully into the mainstream of the country's development.

HIV/AIDS is perhaps the fastest growing worldwide health concern today. Universally, adolescents have been identified as a group at high risk of HIV infection (Richter & Swart-Kruger, 1995). Very little information is available on the lifestyles, health and rate of HIV infection among street children in Zimbabwe. Isolated studies focusing on street children have begun to emerge in some countries and show HIV infection as an issue of growing concern. Our knowledge on the subject is still very...
Show moreHIV/AIDS is perhaps the fastest growing worldwide health concern today. Our knowledge on the subject is still very limited. This report outlines the patterns of risk to HIV by street children in Harare, especially street boys, as well as outlining an assessment of their knowledge of, and attitudes towards the disease.

The analysis shows that those aged 60 years and above are generally poor, with the majority of the very poor residing in rural areas, and are mostly female. The paper also discusses the elderly perceptions of the main causes of poverty which include among other things, unemployment and retrenchment, recurrent droughts, low-paid jobs and high prices on basic necessities. The final section of the paper dwells on possible strategies towards poverty alleviation in Zimbabwe and some recommendations for planners. These include employment creation, increased access to affordable agricultural loans and financing of self-help projects, cooperatives and income-generating projects.

Urban prostitution in Zimbabwe dates back over a century to the rise of colonial towns. In Zimbabwe employment opportunities in the settler towns attracted male migrants. Due to low wages and the provision of bachelor accommodation in towns, men generally left their families in the rural village. Most lived like single men, often divorced or rejected by their kin (van Onselen, 1976). For those women who migrated independently to town, the only viable occupation was prostitution. Show moreUrban prostitution in Zimbabwe dates back over a century to the rise of colonial towns. Despite the fact that prostitution was never legal during the colonial period and despite attempts to control it by using Vagrants Act, it thrived and still thrives. Prostitution remains largely as a 'hanging-on' strategy. This article explores prostitution in one of Zimbabwe' major towns - Masvingo - and demonstrates prostitutes' life situations, motivations and future plans. Their social and working lives, self-definition of their sex worker status, relationships with other prostitutes, the kinds of social networks they establish, their clients, incomes and expenditure patterns are some of the issues raised in this article. The impact of ESAP on prostitution, urban adjustments and coping mechanisms, are also discussed.

Public events often express, reflect, and reinforce community social relationships and cultural values. Traditional festivals are performed to observe certain rituals and/or a type of event that communicates important cultural themes, often through the use of special forms of language, music, and dance. This community rite of passage - one that accomplishes a change in the situation or status the community is a vital part of contemporary Ghanaian society. Ghanaian festivals, both secular and...

Traditional festivals are performed to observe certain rituals and/or a type of event that communicates important cultural themes, often through the use of special forms of language, music, and dance. This community rite of passage - one that accomplishes a change in the situation or status the community is a vital part of contemporary Ghanaian society. Ghanaian festivals, both secular and ritual are becoming "pan-African" events during which enterprising and competitive activities are performed. As public events, festivals are accessible to traditional leaders, local citizens, elected and appointed political officials, tourists and entrepreneurs. The analysis of public events is particularly useful for understanding differing mechanisms of socioeconomic development. The evolving role that elected government officials play is perhaps a key to understanding the continuing value of traditions in an age of modernity.

This paper begins by defining social security and examining its major forms. The paper then goes on to examine social security provisions in some countries in eastern and southern Africa, demonstrating that there is no country in this region (excluding South Africa) which has a comprehensive social security system. There are, however, a number of disjointed schemes which offer rudimentary social protection. The paper observes the lack of social protection for the rura1 population, a situation...

The paper then goes on to examine social security provisions in some countries in eastern and southern Africa, demonstrating that there is no country in this region (excluding South Africa) which has a comprehensive social security system. There are, however, a number of disjointed schemes which offer rudimentary social protection. The paper observes the lack of social protection for the rura1 population, a situation which only serves to exacerbate the existing inequalities between the urban and rural population. It is suggested that governments in eastern and southern Africa should seriously consider innovative ways of extending social protection to the rural population. Governments should concern themselves more with the need to meet the basic needs of the poor than the need to protect the poor against contingencies that impair their earning capacity.
