A move from a residual to a radical paradigm is urged, reflecting five key dimensions which together offer a blueprint for a way forward. Radical developmental social work of an interdisciplinary nature, guided by informed, forward-thinking profesionals and grounded in African realities may be the only answer if the profession is to survive into the next century. Perhaps only then will the social workers be able to produce a practice that meets Africa's requirements and one that deals effectively with the major concerns faced by the African peoples.

Show moreThis article attempts to assess the role of Youth Training Centres in Zimbabwe by reference to observation and investigation ("case studies") of two training centres, one a government training centre established since Independence and one a nongovernment training centre established prior to Independence. This article compares the two centres on the basis of history, geographical situation, level of educational requirement for entry, programme content and flexibility, and employment creating ability, amongst several variables. Some attention is paid to the need to train for rural development and to the concept of education with production and how these concepts have been translated practically in these centres. The discussion on the two centres is used to point to some potential policy implications for training and education and focuses on the need for collaboration, coordination and cooperation between the public and private youth training centres. The author ends on a note of optimism born out of the recognition of the problem of youth unemployment and training needs in Zimbabwe and the attempts to deal with these problems.

It mentions the various aproaches that can be adopted towards the eradication of illiteracy, the purpose of literacy and its relation to economic, social and political goals. The need for a literacy campaign in Zimbabwe is analysed and the development of the National Literacy Campaign in that country, and the responsibilities for it assigned to the Ministries of Education and of Community Development and Women's Affairs, are discussed. The main emphasis of the paper is on the poor participation in and relatively high drop-out from literacy classes, presaging the failure to achieve the commendable objectives of the campaign within the target period. Some recent statistics are presented, which indicate the trend of the campaign over the last three years. A study of participation in literacy classes is then presented, together with an analysis of the reasons for low participation. The conclusions drawn indicate that there is a need for national commitment, revitalisation of the campaign and new motivation at all levels if it is to succeed and so achieve its original objectives.

The author describes a research project undertaken with students at the Hong Kong School of Social Work, with the purpose of designing a relevant skills training course suited to their actual work needs and requirements. The result indicates that student social workers are likely to opt for an eclectic model, constructed principally from Western theory, but drawing from the concrete reality of their own situations. The demands of time annd pragmatic considerations, as well as conservative attitudes, are likely to mean that uniquely 'indigenous' models are not developed. However the outcome most probably will be a workable amalgam of learned theory adjusted to suit practical realities encountered in the field.

Different propositions regarding this relationship are considered and the consequent effects seen either to impede or enhance the living conditions of people. The problem of population and development is viewed as having a spatial consequence, particularly dirough the migration into the cities of many people from the rural areas. Although conceptual difficulties do arise in any attempt to measure change, this should not prevent us from attempting to address the issues concerned. Factors which need to be taken into account by Africa planners and policy makers include such areas as employment, availability of food, education, health, housing and equality of opportunity for all.

Show moreThis paper presents the results of a study on the relevance of income generating projects as a reinforcement of acquired literacy skills in Zimbabwe. Very little research has been carried out to assess the extent to which participation in income generating projects actually reinforces the students acquired literacy skills, whereas many studies have evaluated the impact of literacy on socio-economic activities. This study sets out to examine what effects socio-economic activities have on students' literacy test achievements. The results presented here tend to show that high participation in income generating projects is positively correlated with higher total mean scores for total literacy and arithmetic scores. However, the study revealed that variables of high and low participation are not the only ones and cannot be considered in isolation: other variables such as age, sex, etc had to be considered also as results show that these, together with high and low participation in projects, affects students' achievements in literacy test scores. It is believed that the results have useful implications for agencies involved in adult literacy work.
