John Wheeler Papers (c.00006)
-
Description
-
This is a letter from John Wheeler, a union soldier, to his family. Wheeler describes the awful conditions he's seen civilians go through during his time in the war. Many people are starving in towns occupied by the Union in the South. He mentions how women have to do a large amount of work in the absence of the men fighting in the war. Also, one of Wheeler's friends hurt himself by jumping over a creek and might be discharged.

Description

Benjamin writes that he has been dealing with pain in his teeth and head for two weeks (apparently caused by neuralgia), and a doctor suggested binding his face with a whiskey soaked cloth. He notes that this condition made him go blind for a brief time on three separate occasions, so he hopes to be rid of it soon. Benjamin then writes about the kind of ingredients and food he prepares and eats. He tells his mother he will pay for a family friend to provide her with wood for the coming winter...

Benjamin directs the last portion of the letter to his sister Sarah and addresses several frivolous topics.
