Show more"Police use of force has received much research attention as researchers attempt to explain various predictors of this phenomenon. This topic is of great interest to police practitioners, policy makers, researchers, scholars, and criminal justice students. Several studies have examined various predictors of this behavior, including officer education, race, experience, age, and sex. However, most of these studies focused on either the officers' or suspect's sex, while research on the interplay between suspect's sex and officer sex as a predictor of police use of force is lacking. Drawing on criminal threat theory and research on chivalry, this study will examine how the interplay between officer and suspect sex influences the likelihood and severity of police use of physical force. Further, given the influence of social norms on chivalry, the study will further investigate whether the presence of bystanders moderates the influence of officer and suspect sex on use of physical force. Show moreZambia has one of the highest rates of childhood stunting in the world. Traditional health production functions model that good health quality for young children is dependent on the necessary inputs of parental influences, including parental health, parental education, and household wealth. Using data from a Feed the Future survey from rural Zambia and the Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index, I examine the relationship between several measures of spousal human capital and the health outcomes of young children and women of child-bearing age. I find the ability to read and write of both spouses is highly correlated with positive changes in children's and women's health outcomes. Literacy and education campaigns which target both boys and girls should be heavily emphasized among rural and disadvantaged communities in southern Africa, as men's literacy and education as well as women's literacy are both important to improving future health outcomes for children and adults.

Show moreThis thesis examines how intimacy-both physical and emotional-in American football affects masculinity. This research is important because it questions the role of masculinity in a sport considered the most popular in terms of participation, attendance at games, and broadcast viewership (Miaschi, 2017). Theories such as hegemonic masculinity theory and inclusive masculinity theory are used to explain how masculinity is constructed through football. Using naturalistic observation, interviews with seven Michigan State University (MSU) football players, and an analysis of photographs, I found these football players have more intimate relationships with other players on their team when compared to relationships they have with other men outside their sport. Some surprises I found during interviews was that injury during football is not treated as harshly as it once was and one player views being emotional as an important part of being a man. I visually present the intimate aspects of football I witnessed in photographs I created as an employee of Big Ten Network during MSU football games during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, and I offer my analysis of intimacy and masculinity in this sport that includes and explains the meaning behind the power paradox.

Since the 1980s, a substantial body of research has documented the poor housing conditions and inadequate infrastructure in these informal settlements in the United States. However, very little research has focused on the geographic vulnerability, such as exposure to environmental risks and the lack of access to amenities. This study adopts two Geographic Information System (GIS) methods (overlay analysis and proximity analysis) to investigate the vulnerability of informal settlements in Hidalgo County, Texas. This research finds that informal settlements experience more spatial vulnerability than formal neighborhoods as they are further away from the urban center, the job center, and other critical amenities. However, the prevalence of property crime in informal settlements is significantly lower. Within the informal settlements, colonias are still in need of basic infrastructures. Besides, this study finds that state-designated colonias are less vulnerable than newer model subdivisions that have developed largely without acknowledgment by the state.These findings suggest the need for state and local governments 1) to make more targeted investments to provide water and wastewater service; 2) to develop public transportation system; 3) to reduce vulnerability by expanding access to amenities or services and 4) to partner with private entities and communities themselves to address the needs in informal settlements."--Page ii.

Prior phonotactic modeling, motivated by gradient acceptability judgments in nonce word judgment tasks (Albright 2009), claim that phonotactic grammaticality is gradient, and these models are evaluated by their ability to judge nonce words with scores that correlate with human acceptability judgments. Gorman (2013) argues that these gradient models do not account for the facts sufficiently and claims phonotactic grammaticality is categorical. In this thesis, the account of Gorman (2013) is implemented as well as a prominent gradient model from Hayes and Wilson (2008) and compared with the performance of two machine learning models (a support vector machine and a recurrent neural network), with all models trained on a corpus of English onsets. Results in this thesis show that the computational models are unable to correlate with human judgment data from Scholes (1966) as well as a categorical prediction of acceptability based on whether a sequence is attested in the lexicon or not, and that these models rely on assumptions which when challenged show that the models do not convincingly capture the gradience of the human judgment data used for evaluation.

However, similar to other vegetatively propagated crops, adoption of quality seeds (i.e., certified or clean seed) is strikingly low in the Kenyan potato sector. This inhibits the development of a robust and commercially viable potato sector and severely limits Kenya's potential to increase potato production while combating the spread of pathogens. This study uses auction experiments to measure farmers' willingness to pay for seed products representing the three seed systems and evaluates the effectiveness of each seed system in communicating the assurance of quality and the effect of trust of the seed source on farmer's valuation of seed products. The study contributes to the literature by exploring the role of information, branding, and reputation as quality signals to curtail the effects of information asymmetry in credence and experience attributes of quality seed. Results show that potato farmers in Kenya value the formal seed system the highest, followed by the semiformal and the informal systems. However, the formal seed system has not been effective in signaling quality through certification. In terms of the branding and reputation effect, the parastatal ADC Molo and some clean seed producers in selected counties showed strong signs of quality signaling through branding. What this means for the potato seed system in Kenya and beyond is that farmers do trust institutions (i.e., KEPHIS certification) as well as branding and reputation, but still remain hesitant to engage in the formal and semiformal seed systems due to other exogenous and endogenous factors.

Show moreUtilization of orange juicing waste (OP) as a filler material within a polymer matrix can add value to this agricultural waste and reduce dependency on non-renewable resources. This study aims to study the impact of OP filler's physical characteristics including size, loading, and retention or removal of zest on the properties of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and to produce LLDPE/OP films by blown-film extrusion. LLDPE/OP sheets with zest exhibited decreased thermal stability, larger OP agglomerates, worsened dispersion, and darker yellower colors and can act as UV- and light-absorbers. Larger OP particles increased air bubble formation, decreased mechanical properties, worsen dispersion, and produced darker yellower composites. Higher OP loadings resulted in LLDPE/OP composite sheets that have darker yellower color, decreased mechanical properties, and increased the size of OP agglomerates, as well as improved distribution and worsened dispersion. LLDPE/OP sheets that had properties most like neat LLDPE were sheets containing OP without zest and smaller particles sizes. This OP was used to determine maximum OP loading for LLDPE/OP films produced by blown-film extrusion. The LLDPE/OP films were subject to a sensory similarity triangle test and a comparison of package acceptance when different OP loading was used. This study found no difference in sensory qualities of bread when packaged in LLDPE/OP to neat LLDPE films. OP loading did not influence consumer perceptions of overall liking, appearance, surface roughness, color, or smell when LLDPE/OP films with 5 and 11.5% OP loadings were compared. This study demonstrates that OP waste can be converted and physically modified into a usable filler for plastic films for food packaging applications without altering the quality of the food product.

Show moreLake Michigan communities have already begun to feel the effects of climate change, and research suggests that these areas will experience many phenomena that will negatively impact the ecosystem and human livelihoods (GLISA, 2014). While agencies exist to generally guide coastal management, Michigan lacks institutions that establish regulations or requirements for managing the Great Lakes coastal region (Norton et al., 2018). As a result, Michigan's coastal communities have the responsibility of preparing for an uncertain future under climate change. I compared risk perceptions between different resident groups, as well as between different communities, varying by county, size, and presence of a previous coastal resiliency program. I used a four-wave tailored design for data collection (Dillman, 2009) in six Michigan communities along Lake Michigan from December 2018 to April 2019. I found communities with resiliency programs are less concerned about coastal risk than other communities and lake residents are more concerned about coastal risk than municipal officials. I also found that previous experience with environmental risk and gender are predictors of concern about coastal risk. I suggest that future outreach materials focus on lake residents and that community-engaged work to create more robust coastal resilience plans are beneficial to mitigating risk perceptions. The results from this research can also be used to inform future planning and zoning policies, as well as other coastal resilience policies.

The software-defined radio chosen for this work is the SDRplay Radio Spectrum Processor 2 Pro (RSP2pro). The RSP2pro was chosen because of its ability to provide absolute received power measurement capabilities at a price much lower than a traditional spectrum analyzer.The absolute power level and frequency performance of the RSP2pro has been characterized by direct comparison with an electromagnetic compatibility analyzer and the results are shown. A method for automating measurements taken with the RSP2pro companion software is described. The RSP2pro is also used to perform precompliance radiated emissions tests with an electromagnetic compatibility antenna and the results are discussed. Throughout this work a sample of three RSP2pro units is compared and variations in measurements across the three units is examined. A common very-high frequency "rabbit ear" television antenna and an ultra-high frequency "bowtie" television antenna are used with the RSP2pro to create a complete radiated emissions precompliance test setup. A procedure for characterizing these antennas and determining their suitability for radiated emissions precompliance testing is also described. The RSP2pro test setup for measuring radiated emissions is compared to a traditional precompliance test setup consisting of an electromagnetic compatibility spectrum analyzer and an electromagnetic compatibility antenna. This comparison includes a discussion of the relative cost, measurement accuracy, and overall convenience of using each test setup.

Using a murine model of asthma, we observed that HDME-exposed Balb/c mice have increased airway hyper responsiveness (AHR), cellular infiltration, goblet cell hyperplasia, and elevated levels of Th2 cytokines in the lungs, as well as increased serum IgE levels as compared to the control mice. In contrast, AHR, and cellular infiltration were significantly reduced in HDME-exposed Cd2-/- mice. Interestingly, Il13 but not Il4 or Il5 gene expression in the lungs was significantly reduced in HDME-exposed Cd2-/- mice. Of note, the gene expression of polymeric mucins, Muc5b and Muc5ac were significantly reduced in the lungs of HDME-exposed Cd2-/- mice. Furthermore, gene expression of various protective micro RNAs were increased in the lungs of HDME-exposed Cd2-/- mice. Lastly, in a mouse model of neutrophilic asthma, Cd2-/- mice exhibit significantly reduced AHR and Il13 and Il17a gene expression. Given the established role of IL-13 in promoting goblet cell hyperplasia and mucus production during allergic asthma, and various micro RNAs regulating different aspects of asthma symptoms, our studies reveal a unique role for CD2 in both Th2-high and Th2-low asthma.

Show moreThe relationships between Japanese gardens and Chinese gardens have been studied and discussed for a long time. This study focuses on the topic by a quantitative method. A cluster analysis is conducted to define the similarities and differences between these two kinds of gardens. The distinctive varieties in the result shows the elements that presents the relationships most distinctively. For this study, the data is collected in both Chinese gardens and Japanese gardens in order to show more persuasive results illustrating the relationships between these gardens. Principal component analysis is used to analyze the data, and to show intuitional visual results by graphs. The statistic software output shows a set of principal components. First three principal components contain roughly 59% of the variance. The design elements that distinctively effect the relationship are also indicated in the results, which lead further interpretation about the topic. The scatter graph shows distinct differences between Chinese gardens and Japanese gardens. Major elements divided Chinese gardens and Japanese gardens, traditional gardens and modern gardens, and Japanese gardens. This research can be used by garden designers and researchers to gain a insight concerning of the similarities and differences between Japanese gardens and Chinese gardens.

In Michigan, this disease complex is often managed using broad-spectrum soil fumigants such as methyl bromide, metam sodium and 1,3- dichloropropene, which can be harmful to applicators as well as soil and environmental health. Since the phase-out of methyl bromide in 2005, alternative control tactics to soil fumigants have become increasingly important to potato growers. In this thesis I investigated the use of (1) manures and manure-based composts and (2) non-fumigant nematicides and fungal-based biocontrols and their efficacy in reducing potato early die incidence. In laboratory trials, poultry manure and a blend of poultry and dairy manure compost (Layer Ash Blend) provided significant control of root lesion nematodes with 0% survivorship at rates of 5% (vol/vol) or higher. In field trials, I did not observe significant (P < 0.05) reductions in nematode populations regardless of treatment but did see a reduction in germinating V. dahliae microsclerotia in plots treated with poultry manure. Of the nematicides tested, Salibro treatments significantly reduced root lesion nematode and V. dahliae populations. From this research, it is clear that non-fumigant alternatives are possible for Michigan potato growers.

Technofeminist threads in rhetoric and composition in the late 1990's and early 2000's were mostly abandoned. They deserve renewed attention, with updating based on the existence and necessity of fourth-wave feminism today. The author first describes her own origin story that led to her interest in this research. She then applies a system of virtual critical discourse analysis and resultant coding schema to four representative posts and their comment sections. This thesis concludes with a call for the creation of more communitarian, feminist spaces on the Internet with similar models of engagement to those used in 'A Practical Wedding.'"--Page ii.

Show moreThe field of applied behavior analysis (ABA) comes with rigorous work expectations and demands. ABA practitioners who are also graduate students must balance the extensive workload of educational and work expectations. Given these demands, graduate students providing ABA services to clients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) need strategies to maintain their own positive mental health in order to maintain high academic achievement and to prevent burnout. Using a multiple baseline design this study examined whether teaching 6 graduate students enrolled in an ABA master's program who were also working as part-time practitioners providing ABA services to individuals with ASD to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based strategies impacted their engagement and active participation during an online synchronous class. Changes in psychological flexibility, stress, and values-behavior were also examined. Although there was no functional relation between the training on using ACT-based strategies and the dependent variables, the lack of effects is likely because the participants enrolled in the study did not have baseline levels that indicated a need for intervention. Additionally, it is hypothesized that competing factors and stressors related to the COVID-19 pandemic likely outweighed the impact of the training to use the ACT-based strategies. The results are discussed more in as well as implications for future research. Decomposing the interconnected system into a number of independent phases could simplify the problem; however, it may not guarantee the optimality of the best solutions due to the missed constraints between stages. In this study, two mixed integer programming models for the manufacturing of reusable plastic containers are presented. One is based on the flow of the material and the other is based on the level of the workforce at each period. The proposed models are able to (i) deal with varying demand, (ii) reflect various regulations and restrictions of public and private warehouses for storing materials, and (iii) identify the importance of subcontracting when demand increases dramatically. Both mathematical models are implemented in the case of packaging manufacturing. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis has been conducted on different parameters of the problem to test the effect of parameter changes. To sum up, the general framework of the mathematical models not only can be used for reusable container manufacturing but also the manufacturing of any type of product with a similar supply chain network.

Aluminum oxide in the form of nanoparticle have good mechanical strength, barrier, thermal and antimicrobial properties which, when added to a polymer, can improve its properties significantly and increase its applications considerably. This research attempts to develop a biodegradable film with chitosan added with aluminum oxide and study its effect on the functional properties of the chitosan film. The functional properties taken into consideration were tensile strength, % elongation at break, water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability (OP), antimicrobial and thermal properties. There can be potential novel applications in packaging if these composite films have improved requisite properties. The oxygen permeability of the films was not affected after adding aluminum oxide and decreased only by 6% after adding 2% Al2O3. On other hand, the water vapor permeability values increased significantly (p<0.05) by around 30% after adding 2% Al2O3, which is not desired. The tensile strength decreased from 40 MPa to 36 MPa and the % elongation at break reduced significantly (p<0.05) from 98% to 83%. There was no change observed in the thermal properties of the films, and there was no inhibition zone seen when tested for its antimicrobial properties after the addition of aluminum oxide. These results suggest that the properties of this composite material formed using chitosan with aluminum oxide were not affected in some aspects such as tensile strength and oxygen barrier property; and additional work is required to conclude the hypothesis of generating a composite chitosan film with aluminum oxide as nanoparticles for improved properties.

Because rivers are products of the landscapes they drain, features of the landscape like land use, geology, and climate control habitat. Based on these relationships, it stands that anticipated changes in climate will lead to changes in stream fishes through changes in habitat. While natural resource management agencies collect habitat data to help conserve streams into the future, stream habitat data are not always used as intended, in part because some managers may have an incomplete understanding of interactions between rivers and the landscapes they drain. To fully address the impacts of climate change on stream fishes, managers must better understand how climate affects stream habitat and incorporate these concepts into management decision-making processes. This thesis addresses that need. In Chapter 1, we identify ways to increase use of stream habitat data by natural resource management agencies to better conserve fishes from current and future stressors. In Chapter 2, we investigate influences of multiple landscape factors on physical stream habitat, including climate factors. Collectively, outcomes of this research offer managers information and strategies for using stream habitat data to conserve stream habitats and the fishes they support with changing climate.

To do this, there is an increasing demand within the agricultural field for rapid diagnostic tools to improve the efficiency of current methods in plant disease and DNA identification. The use of gold nanoparticles has emerged as a promising technology for a range of applications from smart agrochemical delivery systems to pathogen detection. In addition to this, advances in image classification analyses have allowed machine learning approaches to become more accessible to the agricultural field. Here we present the use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the detection of transgenic gene sequences in maize and the use of machine learning algorithms for the identification and classification of Fusarium spp. infected wheat seed. AuNPs show promise in their ability to diagnose the presence of transgenic insertions in DNA samples within 10 minutes through colorimetric response. Image-based analysis with the utilization of logistic regression, support vector machines, and k-nearest neighbors were able to accurately identify and differentiate healthy and diseased wheat kernels within the testing set at an accuracy of 95-98.8%. These technologies act as rapid tools to be used by plant breeders and pathologists to improve their ability to make selection decisions efficiently and objectively.

The present investigation utilized a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate the use of an online behavioral skills training (BST) approach to teach behavior technicians to implement 20-min mand training sessions via telehealth with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The training phase of the study consisted of both role-play with feedback as well as feedback during sessions with the child participant. Results showed increases in behavior technician’s percentage of accurate implementation and rate of fully correct trials implemented following the training. Child participants also showed increased rates of independent mands following the BST implementation. Thus, BST may be an effective approach to teach behavior technicians to deliver mand training via telehealth.

Show moreMany consider utility-scale photovoltaic solar power to be an essential component of decarbonizing the United States power sector and mitigating climate change. This technology is well accepted by the public in general surveys, yet often faces local resistance during project siting. This phenomenon is known as the “social gap.” Using social gap theory from the wind energy literature as a foundation, this study examines the causes of and offers recommendations for addressing the solar social gap in Michigan. The study relied on 33 semi-structured interviews with citizens, government officials, and developers across four Michigan communities, each facing a prospective utility-scale solar project. Through thematic analysis, I show that the solar social gap can be attributed to both a vocal minority that dominated community sentiment and project proposals that failed to meet the community’s standards for acceptable development. The gap was exacerbated by the presence of organized opposition groups as well as decision-makers relying on ineffective public processes to engage citizens. This research makes it clear that government officials and developers need to adopt practices that enhance community representation, process transparency, and decision-influence. Though decision-making strategies are not the only factor that affects community acceptance, implementing improved procedures could help close the solar social gap.
