In 1810, along with John Jacob Astor, Robert Stuart organized the Pacific Fur Company. Stuart supplied much of the capital needed for the Grand Haven settlement. In 1834, Stuart was an equal partner with Robinson and Ferry of the Grand Haven Company in Grand Haven, Michigan.

In 1838, Henry Pennoyer was elected Ottawa County's first Sheriff in Ottawa County, Michigan. From 1838 to 1856, Pennoyer managed the Washington House, and from 1843 to 1860, he was the proprietor of the Ottawa House Hotel. Pennoyer was Treasurer for the City of Grand Haven and served in the State House in 1849. Ten years later, he served in the State Senate.

Rev. Le Moyne Seth Smith, 1808-1894, arrived in Ottawa County in 1947 as a Presbysterian minister. He was the first Postmaster of Spring Lake, Michigan and was Postmaster of Grand Haven, Michigan from 1881 to 1885.

Eleanor Griffin McNett was a charter member of the Grand Haven Women's Club and became its President in 1915 and 1916 in Grand Have, Michigan. She also served as the first Executive Secretary of the Ottawa County Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1917 to the 1930's. Some of her scrapbooks, along with her family home, were donated to the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. The building was occupied by the Girl Scouts in 1941 and named the Griffin-McNett House.
