Bartlett talks about the Vermont quarry, the stone-workers, their work and their art, especially Frank Gaylord, "Dean of American Stone Sculptors". The talk focuses on the hands of the workers as emblematic of their hard lives. Bartlett also describes the immigration of European stone-workers, their lives, and their shortened life expectancy due to exposure to silica dust in the stone, as well as the lives of the widows left behind. Questions and answer concludes the session. Bartlett is introduced by Professor John P. Beck, Associate Director, Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Furst, Jacobs, & Co's quarry at south Marquette is about the busiet place in the city now. Over a hunred men are employed in or about the quarry, and the mill for sawing the brownstone is run night and day, while the force is the quarry itself works 2 1/2 hours every night after supper, making a pretty long day of it.
