Economic development under structural adjustment : evidence from selected West African countries
This paper examines the performance of selected West African countries in terms of the development during ten years in which various stabilisation policies and IMF/World Bank structural adjustmentprogramme (SAP) were implemented. All the countries performed badly as measured by conventional indices. The paper concludes that the IMF/World Bank SAPs must be rejected and recommends, among other programmes, the implementation of the Economic Commission for Africa's adjustment package as a minimum effort to correct the crisis of the last ten years.
