Paper topics cover the linguisticstructure of Shona, Shona socio-linguistics and applied English linguistics. The original idea for this collection first arose from the Tuesday Seminarseries in the Department of Linguistics. Presenters in this series havecome not only from the Department of Linguistics, but also represent avariety of other departments both within and outside of the Faculty ofArts. The range of research topics made us realise the diversity of linguisticand language expertise to be found at the University of Zimbabwe. Ourdesire in this collection is to showcase this diversity, while emphasisingits common foundation Š the study of human language. As such, thiscollection provides theoretical and applied perspectives on language at atime when such issues are of prime concern in Zimbabwe.Cynthia Mparutsa (Mrs.)Carolyn Harford (Dr.)
