THE GRAND MERE ASSOCIATION BOX 140 « STEVENSVILLE, MICHIGAN April 11, 1967 Mr. R. B. Kirkpatrick Executive Editor National Wildlife 534 North Broadway Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202 Dear Mr. Kirkpatrick, Two years ago I was instrumental in organizing a local group to fight for the preservation of some 1000 acres of duneland along Lake Michigan. Our struggle has had its ups and downs. Weare currently pointing to a referendum in early June to reverse some local zoning which would permit sand mining. In the course of this effort I have become painfully aware of the oppo- ition of local government units to efforts to take any land out of their control. It has convinced me of the need to support state and national organizations such as your National Wildlife Federation, which can bet- ter initiate action at state levels. I recently renewed my subscription to National Wildlife and thought what a shame that more local people, who are supporters of our effort, don't realize that strong state and national organizations, supplemented by local interest, are essential for the success of conservation efforts at the local level. The suggestion I have is one which might result in more subscribers to National Wildlife and a broader oncern for conservation. We expect some 200 local residents at a meeting set for the end of May, if you have copies of recent issues of the magazine we could give one to each family with the suggestion that they support at least one National conservation organization. Incidently,,two recent articles that I particularly enjoyed were those on Marcos Island, and the position you took on the Redwoods. Congratulations on a fine magazine, I hope you will see some merit to> this suggestion. ye Frank Lahr CONSERVATION @ RECREATION @ WILD LIFE PROTECTION
