Dear Mr. Grebe:
It was most pleasant meeting with you yesterday, sorry our time was so short.

I am sending you a copy of the zoning request by the Manley Sand interests. This
is what will be diseussed at the December 6th public meeting of the Lincoln Township
Planning Board, at which I hone you can have a representative.

One of the local arpeals of this is the "Marina" idea. we have a report prepared
by knowledvable engineers sympathetic to preserving Grand Mere that point out some
of the problems. I wonder if the Stete Waterways Commission, thru Mr. Keith “llson,
could enter into the picture. The state is involved for several hundred thousand
dollars in the New Euffalo Marina some 20 miles south. Ferhaps it could be pointed
out ~- officially = that the cost of maintaining an opening te the lake, of bullding
piers etc., is so exnensive as a private undertaking that it seems econosically
unlikely a marina could justify it,

I would like to surcsest avain that you personally contact Judge Philip Shapiro,
EWG Yo. Hamlin, Chicaro, Illinois. As I mentioned he is not very approachable,
Sinee he has not had any contact with your office he does not know what value was
placed on his land, or that ‘there may te new lecislation to permit acquisition,
Tf he can be interested, his appwegance at the public hearine December 6th could
be very important. ; .

One point you mentiened, which I hope can be reconsidered, is the idea of permitting
any extensive sand mining, Once there is a sizable cut thrn the dunes the character
of the area behind the dunes will be altered,

Sand mining with state blessing is no more attractive then such work without
séate blessing in my view.

I would like to confirm the date of Monday, November 21st for Mr. Sam Milstein.
Could he diecuss the preliminary plan the department has prepared? ‘Perhaps with
a blowup of the layout, and state, as you mention in your letter, that the
department is goine to include the land cost in yovr budget request for 1967?
