SECOND ANNUAL GRAND MERE HIKE -- MAY 21, 1967 THE GRAND MERE ASSOCIATION ASKS YOU TO VOTE "NO" JUNE 6TH During the past two hours you have seen a portion of the variety of physical terrain that makes the Grand Mere area unique. Its tower- ing dunes and sparkling beaches are its most impressive features. The quiet paths, the wooded areas, the inland lakes and bogs -- with their accompanying variety of vegetation offer much to that growing number of people -- the young and the not so young ~-- who enjoy such a setting. Botanists, ecologists, ornithologists as well as hikers, nature photographers, artists and the casual visitor can all enjoy such an area as Grand Mere. "At a time when each new day sees additional acreage of natural areas in south Michigan destroyed by the bulldozer, and when a growing population makes ever increasing educationa} and recreational demands, can we afford not to preserve such valuable outdoor museums as Grand Mere." Paul W. Thompson, rescarch associate in botany Cranbrook Institute of Science -- near Detroit DON'T BE CONFUSED, SAND MLNING IS THE ISSUE. Large scale sand mining will be necessary to create the channel to Middle Lake. In the preliminary development plan, which is the only legally binding statement the township has from the owners, the owners state their intent to barge-ship processed sand from the Middle Lake. The location for a ~ processing plant "not unlike that now operated at Bridgman* was indicated by Manley's attorney on February 10, 1967 as being on 20 acres in the south east corner of Grand Mere. Grand Mere is one of the last undisturbed areas in the path of an ex- panding population and industrial growth stretching from Chicago around this end of Lake Michigan. Just south of Grand Mere, Indiana and Michigan Electric Companyhas acquired 600 acres of lake frontage which will eventually be the site of a power generation station. Such a development is not incompatible with recreational use of Grand Mere, but does mean that less shoreline is available for public acquisition. We wish to thank Judge Philip Shapiro of Chicago, one of the major land owners in Grand Mere for permission to hike over his land. We would also like to thank Mrs. Betty Iler and Mr. John Hendricks for allowing us to hike along their private drive leading to Lake Michigan and for the use of their stairway to the beach.
