GRAND MERE ASSOCIATION, INC, BOX 140 STEVENSVILLE , MICHIGAN 49127 January 1969 NEWSLETTER We have successfully passed another hurdle in our struggle to pre- serve the Grand Mere area, Last summer, when the Lincoln Township Board approved Mr. Peters' request to rezone approximately sixty- six acres at the Stevensville interchange, many of us had some apprehension as to the sentiments the residents might have about this relatively small area.....but....on November 5, 1968, the residents again expressed a desire to keep Grand Mere in its present state, This should give all of us a renewed vigor to move forward and find a permanent solution to our objective -- the preservation of Grand Mere. The $100 million bond issue for recreation which passed at the November 5 election may give us an opportunity to have the state purchase Grand Mere. We will explore this avenue for saving Grand Mere in the near future. The Grand Mere Board met in November with Mr. John Banyon and other representatives of Indiana and Michigan Electric Company to discuss the possibility of thermal pollution at their proposed nuclear power plant to the south of Grand Mere in Lake Township, They pre- sented an excellent program and assured us that there is no cause for alarm. Although they did relieve some of our anxieties, there is still much to be learned about thermal pollution before it can be written off as harmless. Our successful campaign to defeat the zoning change request and our efforts to raise money for our Natural Study Preserve have taken their toll on our treasury. Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to appeal to you to help us in any way you can, A big job needs to be done, and we will need money and people .... contact your friends, and enemies, and sign them up for a membership in the Grand Mere Association, Incidentally, the minimum dues are now $5.00.
