On July 31, 1969, THE GRAND MERE ASSOCIATION was awarded the
American Motors Conservation Award for:

 

its efforts to preserve the natural beauty of the Grand Mere
dunes area

demonstrating the finest traditions of conservation in the
United States

This award also recognized the purchase by THE GRAND MERE
ASSOCIATION of twenty-two acres of land in the dunes area for
preservation. As of the date of this letter, approximately $36,000 has been
paid toward the purchase price of $44,000. Attached is alist of contributors
who have already taken action against despoilment of our natural heritage.

We have many objectives such as stopping water and air pollution and sand
mining, and related conservation efforts for which we wish to represent this
area. We are eager to pursue these. However, our future now depends on our
ability to meet our commitments on the twenty-two acre Natural Study
Preserve. Our obligation to the 700 students who have already visited the
Preserve and future student groups yet to visit, is to insure timeless
preservation of this area.

The payment balance for the twenty-two acres comes due October 25, 1969.
We have calculated that if each friend and member would send us $20.00,
sufficient funds will be provided. However, any contribution will put us
nearer our goal - and is tax deductible.

The urgency of this matter requires your immediate help. We have enclosed a
self-addressed envelope in which to place your check today!
