Schooner Driver
This was the first ship in the fleet of Captain Thomas Kirby, later sold to David and Daniel Miller. They were nearby when the steam barge H. C. Akeley foundered in high seas off Saugatuck, Michigan on November 13, 1883. David Miller, master of the Driver, sent their lifeboat, manned by his brother David, the mate, and crew member Pat Daley, to the aid of the Akeley. They rescued all but six of the Akeley's crew and received Congressional medals. The Driver herself capsized and sank off Frankfort, Michigan on August 29, 1901.
