Cutler & Savidge Lumber Company
This business operated from 1858 until 1904 and this photograph would have been taken around the time it was it was at its peak. Cutler and Savidge employed nearly 500 men, owned ships and private logging railway track, and milled up to 75 million board feet a year. The Cutler and Savidge yard stretched from the mill on Spring Lake to the foot of Division Street and west to the bridge. In 1880, Michigan produced as much lumber as the next three states combined.
