Source: The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. November 20, 1836 Saturday Marquette people seem highly elated over the prospects of the city, for not for many years, if ever, has its future looked so hopeful. The central point upon the! DSS&A, by which line it will be brought into direct communication with the east and west, it will undoubtedly be chosen by the company for the location of their shops, the fact that they already own a large plant here being an important consideration, apart from the eligibility of the situation. The assurred extension of the M&N road from Iron Mountain to Republic, opens another route to Chica- go, and coming in direct competition with the C&NW, promises a reduction of both freight and passenger rates, as well as open- ing up a new territory to this cityi In addition to these lines the narrow gauge logging road, to be built by the McGraw Lumber company along the Dead river, for the purpose of avoiding the falls and rapids of that turbulent stream, will bring an increase of bus- iness to the city. The Miner, however, hits the nail squarely on the head, when it says that "What the city needs now is manufactur- ing enterprises," and in this direction it behooves our citizens, who have the city's interest at heart, to bestir themselves. The advantages the city has already obtained have beén inthe nature of "special providences," gained without effort on its part, but man- ufacturers are coy and need coaxing, and encouragement of a substan- tial nature. With the proper effort also, the dry docks of the Lake Superior Dry Dock Co., might in all probability by secured to this city, and if, as is rumored to be the case, the company propose building a rolling mill in connection with their other structures, their location here will be doubly desirable. Such gifts are not to be had for the mere asking, however, and each day that passes without decisive action, makes the chances of other cities, who are exerting themselves, so much the better.
