HISTORY OF THE DULUTH, SOUTH SHORE AND ATLANTIC RAILROAD COMPANY AND ITS PREDECESSORS The Daluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad Company, (hereinafter called the South Shore), is a consolidated corporation under the Reilroad lows of Michigan and Wiscon- sin, organized on December 22, 1886, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from St, Ignace and Sault Ste, Narie, Michigan, to Superior and Duluth. Its constituent Companies were thbee Michigan corporations; The Sault Ste. Marie & Marquette BR Co,, the Mackinaw & Marquette RR Co.., and The Wisconsin, Sault Ste. Narie & Mackinac Pailway Company; and the Duluth, Superior & Michigan Hailway Company, a Wisconsin corporation. The South Shore, in 1887, built a line from the Soo to Seo Junction, Michigan, and conmenced construction of a line ‘from Nestoria, Michigan to Iron iver, Wisconsin, completed in 1888. It also acquired « perpetual lease of the Marquette, Foughton & Ontonagon Railroad, extending from Marquette to Houghton, on April 15, 1887, and ob- teined running rights over the Northern Pacific from Iron Hiver, Wisconsin, to Duluth, ity the fall of 1888, therefore, it was operating through passenger and freight service between the Tastera and Western termini mentioned in the Articles of Association, and also operated between Nestoria and the Copper Country under the lease of the MH&O property; and had a total mileage of 526 miles. Later developments were the construction hy the South Shore - in 1892-1894 - of its own line from Iron Hiver to Superior, Wisconsin, where it secured entrance into Duluth over the Soo Line, instead of over the Northern Pacific; the construction in 1888 by a subsidiary known as the Negeunee & Palmer BA Co, of about 10 miles of road from ; the purchase by the Negaunce to Palmer to serve several Marquette County iron min South Shore of the property of the Mi&0 in 1890; and acquiring, in 1893, control of the Mineral Range and liancock & Calumet Railroads in the Copper Country which, until 1923, hauled copper rock from mines to stamp mills, The South Shore line between in, was abandoned in 1935, and at the same time Nareago Junetion and Superior, Wiseon: running rights were acquired over the Wisconsin Central and the Northern Pacific be- tween the same points, The South Shore ie therefore still operating freight end passenger service between its Eastern termini at Mackinew City (connecting with the New York Central Vailroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad) and Sault Ste, Marie (con- necting with the Canadian Pacific Roilway), and its Western termini at Superior and Duluth, and also between Nestoria and Calumet. HISTCHY PRIOR_10_ 1887 A substantial portion of the traffic of the South Shore and its predecessors has always heen the transportation of iron ore from the mines on the Narquette fiange to ore docks in Marquette Harbor, where it was loeded into vessels and carried to lower Jake lake ports, This traffic has been handled by the Mi&O, and its predecessors from the year 1858 down to the time the South Shore was organized. The earlier ore-carrying roads were as follows: Tron Mountain, 2., incorporated in February, 1855, and completed in 1857 from Marquette to Ishpeming. It was merged in 1857 with the Tron Mountain Railway Company, which had been incorporated in March, 1855, and operated as a “Strap railroad" between Marquette and the Jackson Nine at Negaunee. The Bay de Noquet_& Mar a 20 miles of railroad from Marquette to a short distance west of Ishpeming, and was operated until August, 1871, when it was consolidated with the Marquette & Ontonagon AR Co.., under the name of the latter. The Marquette & Ontonagon FR Co. was incor- porated in January, 1863, and constructed and operated a line from Ishpeming to the & Marque. incorporated in December, 1856, constructed westerly line of Marquette County. & Gntonagon KE Co., was incorporated in January, 1870, for the pur- pose of constructing a line from Champion to Ontonagon, but there was no construc- tion by this Company, and in September, 1872, it was consolidated with the Marquette & Ontonagon RR Co., to form the Marquette, Loughton & Ontonagon RR Co. The Houghton & L' Anse, BR_Cg., was incorporated in June, 1881, and constructed a line between Haghton and L'Ause, finisbed in 1883, when it ms consolidated with the Marquette, Houghton & Ontonagon RR Co, under the name of the latter. wetce, Nous nagon HR Co., incorporated in September, 1872, constructed the line from Champion to L’Anse, finished on December 31, 1872, and the consolidetion with the lioughton & L’Anse BR Co, in 1883 formed the Jast link in a continuous line from Marquette to Houghton. qT incorporated in October, 1883, constructed « line from Marquette to Ishpeming, It was operated for two years in competition with the MH&O and was purchased in 1885 by the latter company. After the merger of the MIiGO, with the South Shore in 1890, the Marquette & Western was operated for many years by the South Shore as a second line between Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming, hut was finally abandoned between Marquette and Negaunee in October, 1930, Since that date, ell main line traffic between Marquette and Negaunee, including the iron ore traffic, has been handled over the old main line of the M&O, commonly known as the "North Line", William F.
