No action was taken on it, however, until the railroad companies are heard from. Copies of the pro- posed ordinance have been sent to Superintendent Linsley of the Peninsula division of the C&NW and to Superintendent Watson of the ° Section 1. Every railway company operating a railway through the city of Ishpeming shall keep one watchman at the crossings of its road over Main street and one watchman at its crossing over Third street in said city, constantly from 8 o'clock in the fore- noon until 7 o'clock in the evening of each day in the year. Section 3. The watchman provided for in this ordinance shall be supplied with a red flag which shall be displayed to give notice to the public of the appraach to said crossing of cars, trains and engines. Any corporation which shall violate any of the pre- ceeding sections shall be liable to a penalty not to exceed $100, to be recovered in the manner provided by law. Section 9. Any conductor, engineer, gate-tender, or other person or persons, who shall violate any provisions of the preceeding sec- tions shall, on conviction be subjected to a fine of not to exceed $100 or imprisonment in the county jail not to exceed thirty days. Section 10. All ordinances and parts of ordinances conflicting with the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed. It wasn't at first intended to provide in the ordinance for a watchman at the Third street crossing, but after investigation the council decided that a watchman is not urgently needed at that cross- ing at present, though it is probable that one will soon be required there, as that part of the city is growing rapidly. There is nothing in the ordinance to which railroad companies can reasonably object. Flagmen are needed, and no train shall be run over the First, Main or Pine street crossings at a speed exceeding six miles an hour. 5SSUA Stations ~ Ishpeming
