September 3, 1887 Saturday A misplaced switch Wednesday noon caused a heavy coal train coming up the cut leading from the merchandise dock to run in- to a lot of empty coal cars standing on a cut in the siding, waiting to be run down on the dock to load coal. The emptys were piled up in the cut in great confusion and a number bad- ly smashed by the collision. It is said that the engineer of the train was so enraged by the accident that he jumped down from his cab and proceeded to put a "head" on the man whose interference with the switch caused the smash.
