Source: The Mining Journal Marquette, Mi. September 10, 1887 Saturday Railroad Work Ishpeming - President C. F. Dutton and other officials of the M&N arrived in the county Friday of last week and were taken to Republic in their special car over the South Shore the same day. They stayed over at Republic Friday night and left the county on the return trip to Milwaukee Saturday after- noon. During their stay they looked over the ground between Republic and Champion, where the next section of their line is to be built. Mr. Dutton was seen by a reporter of the Mining Journal Sat- urday afternoon, but he had nothing to say regarding the plans of the M&N for the future, further that that the line is to be extended from Reputlic to Champion at once. It is whispered among those who ought to know that an alliance, offensive and defensive, has been entered into between the M&N and the DSS&A, but how true this may be cannot be said. Such an agreement would give the South Shore a southern outlet, and would let the M&N into the Lake Superior ports. dust at present contractors who will build the extension of the C&NW from this city to Republic and Michigamme are trying to possess their souls in patience. They were given the contract a few days after the preliminary survey was be- gun, and prepared to start work at once. The first party of engineers have not completed the survey yet and the second party of surveveyors is working at a considerable disadvant- age, not having the notes and books of the first party. Things will be going more smoothly in about a week, and Langdon & Co., the contractors can put all their teams ana men to work to good advantage. The surveyors have three camps at various places along the route, and the contractors are build- ing stables and shanties at Camp No. 1, about four miles west of Ishpeming. It is not probable that the rails will be laid and the track in readiness for running trains much before January 1, but the bulk of the work will be finished by the time cold weather sets ine C&NW VPSSRA M&N Stations - Champion - Michigamme
