Accident Report - September 19, 1887. An accident occurred on the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway near Marquette station on the 19th day of September 1887 at 800 P. ll. caused by: A train of loadéd ore cars (57 cars) that was being let in the yard siding after the engine was detached, gaining too much headway and coming violently in collision with cars in the yard. Conductor Wm. Fe Mahan and the two brakemen were on the cars. When the cars struck, Mr, Mahan was thrown under the cars and instantly killed; the other men were uninjured. 16 cars were badly broken up. An inquest was held on the body of Mr. Mahan next day. A copy of the verdict is attached. Casualties resulting from the above accident - 1 employe killed. A. Watson, General Superintendent.
