Source: Sault Ste. Marie Democrat Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, a September 22, 1887 Thursday The DSS&A Directors Arrive About 1:30 Tuesday, a special train conveyed a few of the directors of the DSS&A to the Sault. The party consisted of Hugh McMillan, president; Hon. Peter White and A. O. Jopling of Marquette; W. O. Strong, land commissioner; A. Watson, general superintendent; J. A. latcha, chief engineer; W. L. Webb, engineer in charge of construction and General 0. Me Poe. ‘he party on arrival were driven to the Iriquois, for dinner and then visited the various parts of the city. The gentlemen expressed themselves as much pleased with the progress of the work on the line and at the round house, and surprised at the growth of the Sault until about 7:30 yester- day and then returned to Marquette. ‘The gentlemen were re- ticent as to their plans saying that the trip was solely one of pleasure and inspection. Thus came and went the directors of a corporation to which the Sault owes much, and not a cit- izen was present to extend to them a welcome to the Sault. While men of the stamp of these gentlemen are not susceptible to flattery or attention, yet politeness it seems to us, ought to have required that some committee of citizens should have waited upon them and showed them around the Sault, and it would have been greatly appreciated. "by. them." While the time of their arrival was not known until about 11 o'clock, yet be- tween that hour and the hour of arrival. there was certainly time enough to have met them in a hospitable way. The Sault is no longer a slumbering village but a wide awake city, with every- thing that nature can provide, but this wealth alone can mean nothing, we must be glad to see our visitors, and extend to them the hearty hand of welcome. Industries must be invited, they will not come unsolicited. Derelict courtesies often create an adverse opinion to the most worthy objects. That the directors of the road feel this slight, we will know, they came prepared to be received by the citizens, whose guests they were, to their car, where they had already pre- pared to receive them.
