March 5, 1887 Saturday Negaunee - Last Sunday morning a train, consisting of engines no. 9, 32, 54 and 53, and a-coach, no. 9 being ahead and the others following in order as numbered, started from Marquette to plow out the road. When the switch at the side track leading into the Pioneer furnace at this place was reached, engine no. 32 jumped the frog at the switch. Engine no. 9 kept the rails and with no. 32 ran nearly 1,000 feet without stopping. Engine no. 54 broke loose at the switch and ran about 100 feet, coming to a stop when almost across the north track, which is parallel to the one on which the train was running. Engine no. 50 and the coach at the switch brought up standing. The engine was but a short distance from the rails, but the coach was swung around almost at right angles with the track. The accident occured about 11 o'clock and in an hour later no. 32 was again on the track. The other engines were quite a distance from the rails and it required a good deal of work to get them on. One of them lay in such a position that the noon passenger could not get by on the other track. A wrecking train from Marquette was put to work and in the afternoon the track was again clear. \2EBRA Locomotives Equipment - Passenger
