Source: The Sault Ste. Marie News Sault Ste. Marie, Mi. January 19, 1888 Almost a Fatal Accident An event that was very startling and which those who wit- nessed it, expected to see terminate fatally, occurred at the depot Wednesday afternoon at about 4:30 o'clock. Conductor David Bailey of the South Shore freight was running along the track in front of an engine, when he stepped into a slight de- pression and fell onto the track. Before he could recover him- self however, the engine was upon him and it seemed that he was about to be crushed to death. Fortunately, however, the en- gine had a snow plow attachment, which was adjusted near the track and it caught up Mr. Bailey, and after pushing him along the track a short distance finally threw him on to one side. Engineer Smelberg, of course, reversed the engine as soon as possible and his promptness, no doubt, is due the the fact that fatal results were avoided. Mr. Baily was badly injured about the legs, but no bones were broken. He was taken to his boarding place on Gros Cap street and is doing as well as can be expected.
