Editorial

From information that comes to us from the East, we are com-
pelled to believe that the CPR has secured a controlling inter-
est in the DSS&A, and will shortly be placed in possession of
the line. It would be idle to speculate on what the effect of
this thing will be on the general policy of the road, as the
purpose that the purchasers had in view in getting control of
this line must remain a matter of conjecture until they choose
to reveal it. But it may be assumed that the company to which
the road is about to pass has purchased it as a business in-
vestment, and intends to operate it on business principals, in
which case its local patrons have no occasion to apprehend
that the change will operate in any manner to their disadvan-
tagee The CPR is a strong company, and enjoys the advantage
of having a management that is not lacking in either ability
or enterprise. In the hands of such a company the line ought
to be made an important factor in the transportation business
of the northwest, and the Mining Journal has faith to believe
that it will be. While upon this subject, we venture to ex-
press the hope that the change in control of the road will not
be followed by any general changes in the local officers of
the line. As the men now in charge have acquired a familiar-
ity with its needs and business that would not be very soon
obtained by new men. They are, besides, railroad men of proud
competency in their respective positions, and their retention
in their present places by the new owners of the line would
go a long way toward assurring people who have been as long
served by it that the change about to take place would not
in any manner militate against their interests..
