January 19, 1889 THE MIIIIG JOURvaL Marcuette, wichigan January 19, 1889 The Ploy Works Splendidly The Leslie rotary snow shovel recently delivered to the Sovth Shore rcad was given a rartial test Nednesday mornings in the presence o° the inventor and the officers of the D.,S.S. & 4. Mr, Leslie asked for the track which nad tthe most snow on it, and tre half-mile switch between the sho~s and seales, and next to the main track, was selected, as the shelter cf ore cars north of it had caused heavy drifts to form, while snow 'ad alsa been shoveled ento it fr Witn Allen Cowden as vilot and Jchn Chatem as engineer, the new vlow was cut on the switch, ahead of a rusher, and started. The surrise that followed was a grsat one. ‘That izzing wheel picsed all the snow wit:in reach and hurled it, dirt, ice and all way off to the right, clear over three or four cther switches. Fete Rez stood in his back door: to see the plow work, and as he saw that stream of yard shovelin:s ecr.e flying . through the air he hastily scrambled inside and slammed the door to keep the stuff out. The snow was thrown clear into tke dens cf the places on the south side of Wa nsgton street, + it was oasily distinsuishable because so badly discolored, jear the scal=s the plow found a decent drift an’ fired it through the air clear uron the hish bank on the north side cf the track, over three or four rows of ore cars and more than 150 feet away. The Rotary Plow WY A representative of tne HIYI'G JOURYAL visited the South Shore shops today with } Sedgwick and the new master mechanic, Nr, Conolly, and was ahaun about the new rotary snow vlow by Mr. J, Suggitt, the representative of the Leslie Rotary Snow Shovel Co., who is here to set it up, and iir, Meehan, road foreman cf engines for the 9.,5.3.%:A. A full description of the plow or shovel will be of interest and in this connection a@ correction is necessary, the St. Ignace News having stated that this is the second plow cf the kind ever built. It is Ho. 23, seventeen having been built this year, three cf uhich were for narrow gauge roads, The dew York Central is the only eastern road having one ot the clows it wanted several but the works were too crowded to turn thom out. ‘the Canadian Pacific has purchased the right to ouild the Leslie vlow ror its own line and has constructed twelve so tvat there are al- together thirty-five rotary plows in existence. eavy iron I-beams is mounted on bso four- _ the ecnstructicon being of ex x 93 journals used. “This frare carr! lve type, with a bricx arched fire-box betucen the 2 whesle. t boiler sun- i } A stout frame of h wheeled 3i a large voller, n extendin- the full width plies steam to two 17x22-i thich is fast ab These sear into a larger bevel wh which is fast on the main shaft ari vine the 9-foot in front of the mach h is set in a round, i front ten feet sruare, edge of the casins being 1 3/l inches abcve the track, Pe wheel has an inner and outer series of knives cel ee so that they slice off the snow and feed into the fan wh ich is on the same shaft, the fan wheel havi radial blades. and fan wheel revclves from 150 to 29) times a minute, centrifugal force causes the snow to fly to the cutside fan wheel and vhen off into the air when it comes o: opening or snow chute, which is imme i } d so t it can be turned and made to deiiver on either sice of the track, according to the direction in which the knives are revolved. The boiler and machinery are covered by a stout house, the front windows having small panes of French plate glass to resist the oressure of the snow. In the front part of the hcuse the pilot is placed with all the machinery resulating the knives and movable snow hood under his ccntrol, while regulates the movements cf the pushing ensine and of the e neer of the rotary by bell sisnals. he also has control of the e knife in front of the forward truck and of the flaneer and ice plow laced just behind the forward truck, A locomotive ten*er is attached to carry fuel and water for the boiler and the two are then pushed by a locesotive. In its vresent form the vlow veighs 110,000 lbs without tender and will go through a cut, vacxed with snow and fea, as fast as a man can walk, cutting a channel ten feet wide and ten feet deen. Ordinary six foot drifts it will Jispose of at ten miles an hour and throw the snow a feet from the track, Twelve inch wings will be nut on the casi c e the cut 12 feet so that the si-es of the Wagner cars 1 not be scratchei, AS soon 35 the machinery is all in plsce the plow will be started in the s! yard and the knife wheel run for a day or two to set the machinery in smooth working order.
